“I don’t believe we were put here with all of our differences to conform to a uniform state of mind” ~Sonya Teclat. Conformity is when people change to act the same as other people in their society. The government, media, and social groups are a big part of the society. These things encourage people to conform. One of the books that have people conforming is Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson. In Among the Hidden Jen, one of the characters is very outgoing and brave. Luke another character is very shy, once he meets Jen he conforms to be brave like her. In addition, society encourages conformity through government, media, and social groups.

Many people use the internet as a safe haven. They use it to see what is in style and then they conform to that trend. According to salon.com advertisements with beautiful models present specific ideas of beauty and it makes you want to conform to be like them. Television, ads, and social networking sites will act from an economic standpoint to make you want to buy it and then people will conform to you. The internet and media give people a sense of what is right and what is wrong. So when people buy something or see an ad they conform to what that person thinks is right. People listen to songs on the radio and if they see that a lot of people like that song and listen to it over, and over again they will conform to like that song too, just to be like everyone else. People rate songs and other things on the internet based on what others think. According to Dr.Salganik “if you rewound the world and played it again, you could see a potentially different outcome.” This is like a song if you see that people on the internet or media like it, you will like it too. Soon everyone will like it. This means if everyone starts to like a song you will see a different outcome in the world and how people react to the song. Some people on the internet can be very persuasive the author of Among the Hidden made a character that is also like that. Jen was using the internet and media to talk to other shadow children and make them come to …show more content…
These parts can encourage and influence people to conform. The government, media, and social groups are the things that encourage people to conform. In North Korea, the government has many rules and laws enforced about how people should act and what is allowed in North Korea. Their government is very strict and forceful. Conformity can be seen as positive and negative consequences. In North Korea, the population has to conform to Kim Jong Un who enforced laws that are not very good. People on the internet already have an idea of how people should act and behave online. Social groups have influenced our society and social life because they encourage people to do what the social norms say. Overall, conformity influences people to do bad and good things in life. They encourage people to conform to everyone in the society and in everyday
Conformity, it’s something everyone deals with, even if they do not realize it. Although, what happens when conformity takes control over everything? What if the world was stripped of individuality, no citizen has any rights to hold on to, while not being able to think for one’s self. That is an image what it would be like if everyone in the world were to conform to a restricting society. Just think of all of the advances in technology the human race has come up with in the last ten years alone. None of that would have been possible in a society where no one can go above another person's IQ level. This is the world the characters in Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem live in. The reasons that total conformity is dangerous is because individuality is not possible, no family history, and advancement would not be possible.
Social conformity can cause issues in the real world if it is overused. For example, conformity can cause a bystander effect. The bystander effect is when people follow the crowd and fail to react when people are in need. Conformity can also cause people to do things that they don't necessarily want to do, but they do it because they don't want to be the odd one out. In the short story “Anthem” by Ayn Rand, conformity is a big idea in the book because everyone is controlled by how they think and speak.
Conformity is a form of social influence, when we conform we act and think like members of our group. Often people even alter or change their personal beliefs to match those around them. When we conform we feel pressured to fit in with others, to be a part of the majority. While we may still have contradicting beliefs towards things, we change our behaviors and actions to match what everybody else is
In society there is the ever-present pressure to conform. It is viewed as a negative thing because people say that you have to change your ways to whatever the social norm is to be part of the in-crowd. Those people also say that conformity limits people's freedom to make bonds with people because they are pressured to make friends with people in your group. I think that conformity can be good in some scenarios, such as trying to become part of a larger group and trying to mold yourself in a way so you can feel accepted, conformity is also good for leaders because they can influence the actions and thoughts of the group.
Conformity is when a person changes him or herself to fit into a group. In order for someone to do this, he or she usually has to give up one of their personal qualities. It is highly argued over whether this is a good or a bad thing. One such book called Stargirl, demonstrates both the negative, and positive side of conformity. In the novel, author Jerry Spinelli suggests that conformity isn’t necessarily a bad thing, many just use it to become a leader.
Most of society conforms as a whole, otherwise one may appear to be “outside” of the society that they live in, becoming unconventional or dangerous to the “norm” of their society. These conventions have a major role within society because they are general agreements on a social behavior. The force making toward conformity in society is essentially the stability of the society itself, which is created by people conforming to please others. However, people who do not
Conformity is a struggle that people encounter everyday in society. There are many examples of the different types of conformity in the world. Some of these types are in the examples I am going to discuss. In “The Sociology of the Leopard Man”, “Two Kinds”, and Dead Poet Society we learn that it is not always a good idea to conform. Although conformity can be good, I believe that it is even better for people to step out of their comfort zone and not be afraid to show who they really are.
Conformity: “Agreement between an individual's behavior and a group's standards or expectations. A conformist is one who follows the majority's desires or standards.”Conformity is not always necessarily a bad thing, but can be when followed excessively. For instance, can you imagine what this world would be if everyone looked, dressed, talked, walked, and acted the exact same. This is what life is like at Mica High, and this paper analyzes the negative aspects, and consequences of conformity in Stargirl.
We see conformity in fast food nations with the way fast food restaurants are formatted. I say this because most fast food restaurants have fast food restaurants instead of just a diner because it’s more convenient for the customer and there’s easier access to junk food. We see how this affects individuals in society when in the book it said “Twenty years ago, teenage boys in the United States drank twice as much milk as soda; now they drink twice as much soda as milk.” Conformity and how it affects an individual is also demonstrated in the article, Why we Don’t Complain (WDC) written by William F. Buckley Jr., the article tells of a man who doesn’t complain-even though he wants to-because everyone else didn’t. This affects him as an individual in society because when he finally did complain he had gotten looked down upon; “ “Conductor”, I began with a considerable edge to my voice...instantly the doleful eyes of my seatmate turned..to fix me with a resentful stare”. This made him a bit more reluctant to un-conform from the “social norm” of not complaining in future events. In Working at Wendy’s (WW) written by Joey Franklin, conformity is shown when one of the characters, Oren, has to conform to selling drugs because “he believes he can do nothing else” which has affected him as an
According to Webster Dictionary, conformity is defined as, “in compliance of rules, laws, or standards.” Mark Twain’s, “Cone-pone Opinions,” demonstrates how society reacts to new conformities; individuals eventually conform to popular ideas and inevitably abandon these ideas for something greater. Twain states, “It is our nature to conform; it is force which not many can successfully resist.” (Twain 2). The reason people conform is not for self-approval, but rather, for the approval of others.
In fact, this also applies to the situation of understanding what social conformity is. This subject has been around for centuries, forcing many to behave in a certain way that the society expects. The influence of peer pressure is still a topic has an impact to the world, especially the adolescents. The “[s]ocial psychologists have suggested that one core function of compliance and conformity is to maintain group harmony”(“Social Influence and the Brain:Persuasion, Susceptibility to Influence and Retransmission” Cascio,Scholz,Falk) and this applies to many individuals who value public opinions more than their own. They seek to be “good” people and make an effort to follow the trend of the crowd. More often than not, this also relates to the confidence level of an individual, “If those others agree with one’s beliefs, one gains confidence in them; if they disagree, one loses confidence” (“Conformity,” Levine). This is indeed what many people face today from all different phases of life. Daisy, one of the characters in the book The Great Gatsby, is a perfect example of a person soaked into social conformity. From the beginning of her marriage life with Tom to the end of the book, she progresses into immoral stages of life. Day after day she conforms herself into a world filled with corruptions, such as adultery and murder. Although, she is an adult, she is a character that is stuck in a stage that her age group have already
Social Conformity is the influence of other people that leads us to follow what they do in order to be liked and accepted by them. Many people in present time think they have to do something in other to prove others that they are cool to hang out with and they could be friends. People tend to change their beliefs or what they think is right to do just to fit in a group of people.
Conformity is when one complies with rules or regulations, typically relating to social norms or expectations. In Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, Montag lives in a society where people value conformity and obedience to the government. In this society, the government uses censorship and installs strict social regulations on its population to control them to act the same, behave the same, and think the same. Citizens are a part of a population seemingly brainwashed by the oppressive government that controls their daily lives. In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury portrays how outside forces can influence the thoughts and moral traits of the characters. In the beginning, Montag acted as everyone else did in his society, conforming to the government
Conformity is a well-known social behavior that involves mimicking the behaviors of those around you. Growing up, I was an extremely shy girl who didn’t really have any friends. When I was at middle school age, I didn’t quite understand “girl world”. I didn’t understand why I had to start wearing my hair down and to dress a certain way. I didn’t understand why everyone was so obsessed with this one guy. I didn’t understand all the kids’ slangs. I was extremely lost and judging by the other children, I was totally wrong. As soon as I started conforming to what was considered the social norm, I was accepted by more people and I gained more friends. It wasn’t like I completely lost who I was, I was just acting a little
Conformity is when a person is complacent to a set standard or list of rules, regardless of their own personal outlook, due to norms put in place by the society to which they belong or identify with. There is a lot found on the negative aspects to conforming, but there is a lot to say for its positive effects, as well. Conformity is essential in certain areas of life. Without conformity many things can quickly become chaotic. The government depends on a level of conformity, as well as smaller scale operations. Jobs of specific types demand conformity in relation to uniform which allows for division between employees and customers. There are less conflicts when people conform and that is evident in various facets of society.
