* Partially or Unskilled men have a life expectancy of less than 70 years.

* The average man can expect to be chronically or seriously ill for 15 years of

his life.

* 45% are defined as overweight and 17% as obese.

* 28% smoke and 27% drink alcohol to a degree that is harmful to their health.

* 41% of deaths of males under the age of 75 (60,000 in the UK) are caused by

circulatory disease. Of these, two thirds (41,000) are due to coronary heart

disease.

* 31% of all male deaths under the age of 75 (48,000) are caused by cancer.

* 22,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and some 9,500 die.

* Suicide rate amongst men is increasing. The rate has doubled among 15-24

year old men in the past 25 years.

There is some good news!

* Men are more interested in their health than ever before.

* Millions have given up smoking and are far more likely now to visit their

GP.

* The government has accepted that action is required. Former health

minister Yvette Cooper said ‘one of the starkest health inequalities when it

comes to life expectancy is that between men and women. The question for

all of us who care about ill health among men is what can we do to make a

difference’.
