“Mother Tongue” an essay by Amy Tan addresses several issues that are apparent in our society. This allows the reader to come to more than one conclusion. Whilst reading the essay I found it difficult identify who the target audience of this essay was. After analyzing the text and reading over it a few times I found that Tan may have been simply sharing her story with the general public to emphasize the influence of language on certain aspects of life. I found that the first and foremost purpose of this essay was to show the effect of language on our life experiences. In her text she mentions that she would often have to make important phone calls, pretending to be her mother, because her mother’s English language ability was “limited”. This indicates that Tan communicated for her mother, meaning that the mother was limited to certain life experiences simply because she was unable to communicate in English. In this example Tan is trying to show the audience that language should not be judged by grammar, and that as long as the message is understood, there is no problem. I personally believe that language is not about the words we use but rather about what we mean by them. In today’s society, individuals with imperfect English are identified as inadequate and insufficient. However, if a person possess standards English abilities they are seen as superior to those who do not. Tan also looks at the relationship of language and acceptance in society. Tan states that when her mother and herself went out in public, her mother would not be taken seriously. For instance when her mother went to the hospital to claim the CAT scan regarding her brain tumor, the hospital would not apologize for supposedly losing the
