Amy Winehouse Back to Black
Amy Winehouse is an old soul who inspired a new sound in a modern age. She manipulated classical jazz with her hip-hop influences and her strong unique voice with lyrics from her life experiences. These factors made her music unique and inspiring. Sadly in July of 2011, Amy passed away at the young age of twenty seven, leaving behind her musical legacy. Back to Black is one of her most popular albums that shows off her beautiful voice and thoughtful composition. Due to its unique traits in modern music, it will continue to be played. This album is truly a work of art based on Amy's use of meaningful lyrics in her songs, her strong unique voice, and her particular take on jazz. I feel that Back to Black is an outstanding

I think this album is marvelous for a few reasons, one being her lyrics. The lyrics express struggles within Amy's life that can be considered controversial. Amy would express and confront her troubles in a fearless way within each song, which makes her music even more wonderful. In the documentary film, Amy, they quoted her saying, “I wouldn't write anything unless it was directly personal to me, just cause I wouldn't be able to tell the story right because I wouldn't have done it. Even though the songs are personal, in a sad way, I'd never let it just be that. I'd always put in a punch line in the song just trying to be different with my lyrics”(Winehouse). She spoke the truth and showed her sincere attitude, which made her vulnerable, but made her real and unique. Amy's main experience that effected the lyrics that she wrote was her ordeal with her ex husband Blake. Her experience with Blake was clearly shown in the song Back to Black when Amy sang “You went back to what you knew, so far removed from all that we went through”(Winehouse), which conveys the way Amy felt when Blake left her to go back to his girlfriend. Another reason why I believe this album is outstanding is due to Amy's powerful and distinctive voice. Her voice is strong and charismatic. Her vocal style compares to that of a sixties soul singer. Amy's tone and mood is expressed clearly through her voice. Even when she wasn't singing her lyrics, the sounds she made within her songs expressed the mood. “Her voice glints with possibility: tart, smoky, ready to flirt or sob, and capable of the jazzy timing of a Dinah Washington or the declamation of soul singers like Martha Reeves and Carla Thomas”(Pareles). The main reason why I find this album most successful is that there is no other album out there that sounds similar. “Ms. Winehouse has grown up on hip-hop’s version of R&B, which chops the old dramatic
Her music was so influential during the 70’s and 80’s. She deserves the top female rocker for both decades. Her style and rock status helped many female bands to not be afraid and to play the music that they
Robin Thicke’s music video to his song “Blurred Lines” avidly contributes to the patriarchy, while portraying sexism, gender standards, and beauty standards. His music video can be analyzed from a feminist theory approach, as it’s evident that his song and video contribute to a patriarchal society and its inherently sexist and sexualized ideologies. The ideology behind the song and music video is purely sexual and about male dominance. The lyrics to the song and actions in the video exhibit extreme over sexualization and objectification of the women. Analyzing this piece of popular culture through a feminist approach opens up a provoking conversation about how popular culture functions in a patriarchal culture. Analyzing pop culture though a feminist theory can allow for a larger variety and more in-depth analysis about the social aspects and political agenda within popular culture.
Luke Bryan who started his singing career at age fourteen chooses specific words to indicate the time period and makes it clear to identify the genre in his popular song “Play It Again” released in 2013. The repletion but also his way of saying certain words makes this song special and is straightforward for college students to understand poetry. In this song Luke Bran spots a tan legged girl who he finds attractive. Luke the instantly assumes she is taken because of her beauty. As they begin to carry on a conversation a song comes on she gets excited because her favorite song comes on and before he asked her to dance she took his hand and danced with him until the song cut off.
Black Lives Matter is a national organization striving to rebuild the Black liberation movement; that has become vague in past years. In 2012 after Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman, was dismissed for his crime. This movement emerged in response to the institutionalized racism within our society. Whether it 's black on black crime, police brutality or any form of ferocity actions its moral spurious. The past few months there has been a growth in police brutality, resulting in the deaths of many, predominantly those of african descent. We focus on how to improve the relationship with these officers in the black community and cease all racial tensions. Beyonce Knowles is as an American singer, song-writer and actress; who was born in Houston, Texas. Throughout past years Knowles remained silent in the wake of racial tensions, however she recently expressed her beliefs with the use of her music.
The hit song on the album was “On & On” which striked no. 1 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart and played apart in earning her grammy ( https://youtu.be/-CPCs7vVz6s ). In Rolling Stone magazine’s “100 Best Albums of the Nineties” they said “ Her music was up-to-the-minute jazzy hip-hop R&B, but her voice sounded ancient, with a splash of Northern hipness and a twist of Southern comfort. It was Erykah Badu, from Brooklyn via Dallas, her head wrap tall and tight, singing of knowledge and philosophy and fulfilling unrequited love in the next lifetime. She was the sister-in-music of D'Angelo and Lauryn Hill, the Earth Mother of Nineties boho soul”. She was the definition of a soul singer and everyone loved the vibes and tone you received playing her music. She was also known for her style headwraps and big afros. The success from the album was so big it created a new movement called neo-soul, Erykah Badu was seen as the leading artist of this genre of music.
AC/DC’s “Back in Black”, http://youtu.be/HQywr-PBR_o, was release just five months after their lead singer Bon Scott died (“Songfacts”). “Back in Black” was to be a tribute to Bon (“Songfacts”). The lyrics suggest that he’ll never die, because he’ll live on forever through their music (“Songfacts”). Brain Johnson later joined the band after being discovered in a
As the title of the paper suggests, I chose Kendrick Lamar’s song “Blacker the Berry” off the To Pimp A Butterfly album. When selecting a song, I actually took to Twitter to ask my followers what song I should write about. I personally do not listen to Kendrick Lamar so I decided to ask people who enjoy his music to recommend songs that an analysis should be written over. Several people mentioned “Blacker The Berry”. Although I did not hear the many rhymes and metaphors at first, after reading the lyrics along with listening to the song I was quick to realize how creative, witty and almost unintentional the rapping’s of Kendrick Lamar are. Another reason I decided on this song is because he raps about current violence of high profile crimes
“Pretty Hurts” by Beyonce is embedded with Pathos.“Are you happy with yourself?, ” (Beyonce, Pretty Hurts). This line of the song provoking and emotion-filled song causes the listener to think about their self-esteem. The lyrics have the ability to emotionally connect to the audience that he or she is speaking to, as the topic is not one spoken about much. The emotions of how society can make people feel, pressured, self-conscious, not worthy. The songs make the audience reflect on themselves, do they fall into the pressure? The diction used surfaces sadness, shame, indignation. “ain't got no doctor or pill that can take the pain away” creates sadness, as many people change themselves into someone they are not, such as taking pills and undergoing
Born Amy Jade Winehouse on September 1983, this tattooed singer took the world by storm when her debut album ‘Frank’ was released in 2003. Winehouse is said to be one of those singers who can take on any given genre with her astounding and weird vocal ability which covers soul, blue-eyed soul, rhythm, blues, jazz and reggae. Amy Winehouse is a big could-have-been in current mainstream music, and it is with deep regret that the world lost her in July 2011 due to alcohol poisoning. Many shook their heads in disbelief while others just accepted the fact that Winehouse went out of control and tripped hard on the pavement despite the fame and success she
The huge sign reads “Welcome home daddy!” as the little girl runs and jumps into her father’s arms at the airport. In Carrie Underwood’s song “See You Again” there are many clips of soldiers returning home in the music video. This song reminds today’s society that they will be reunited with their loved ones, whether in this life or the next. Underwood released this song just a few months ago, after the Sandy Hook shootings and the Oklahoma tornadoes. It has become impossible not to notice that today’s society has begun to lose hope in the world. “See You Again” shows us the raw images and reasons that the society has begun to lose hope, but it reminds the population that we must find and maintain hope, because
There was a boy in a new middle school who had a black mom who was in South Carolina with two brothers, a step-mom who was white and was way better at being a mom. And he also had a dad who was puerto rican. The boy moved to a new state in 2013 and started a new life in a town called Plymouth. I was excited but once he started 1rst grade he was always being called and said stupid jokes about being black. This moved on to middle school which was way worst than being joked in elementary school. The middle school was way different, and some of the reasons why it was so different was because it had sports teams, you walk around the hallways to get to classes, and was to elementary schools put together and that is why it is so different. There were kids that think they are cool and bully or make fun of anyone who they don’t like and this is something that is going to come back to bother me!
This very slow song, so in my opinion I think it reinforces a sense of bittersweet, because even though she mentions how she wants to be remembered for the good things that she did she also mentions death and regrets in her song.
The above text is the hook to the poem “Mystery of Iniquity” Before going in depth with the first piece of the poem; something stands out in the first two stanzas: “iniquity” and “inequity”. According to Webster’s dictionary, inquity is defined as “gross injustice; a wicked act or thing” and inequity is defined as “injustice, unfairness; an instance of injustice or unfairness” (Merriam-Webster) Here Ms. Hill sets the tone for the rest of the poem. She explains that the unfairness of iniquity and inequity is a miserable feeling. She is talking directly to those that share her unfortunate circumstances of being treated unfairly in a state of misery. The pre verse that follows the hook brings the topic of religion into view. The first four lines in the pre-verse symbolize Biblical meaning and give way to religious pretext. The verse says
The song "U.N.I.T.Y." by Queen Latifah, released in 1994, is a hip-hop song with a theme about the harassment, domestic violence and sexist slurs against women, black woman to be specific. Should “U.N.I.T.Y” be considered literature, specifically is it a poem? I think that every song, no matter what the genre is free verse poetry. However, this artist and song are important in the hip-hop as literature genre movement because of both the artist’s credibility and the message that she is delivering.
Even though Amy was a drug addict and alcohol abuser, She still managed to release platinum-selling albums. Originating from the little known town of Southgate in north London, her inspiring music helped rise the popularity for female musicians in the industry.
