I think that our generation defines what it means to be American in a bad way. Everyone thinks that because they live in the U.S. that they are entitled to stuff, you’re not entitled to anything you have to go out and work for everything and earn it. Another way is everyone is such a wussy, if you’re offended but what I say so what I don’t care no need to tell me about it. This is an essay about how our generation defines what it means to be an American in a bad way, be kinda ready, you might be offended.
In Edward L. Hudgins article, What is an American?, Hudgins defines an American in ways I had not thought of before. Hudgins stated all these ideas about Americans being driven to do their best and meeting challenges head-on. I would like to think that being an American means everything Hudgins stated, however I think Hudgins is giving the optimistic answer of what being an American means. What Hudgins explains as being an American is what I believe most Americans were like when the country was first founded. The idea of taking risks and working until the risks paid off is one that most Americans do not believe because the possibility of actually achieve one’s dream is extremely less likely today than it was when the country was first established.
The book The Ugly American clearly demonstrates several of the established Special Operations Force (SOF) imperatives outlined in ADRP 6-22. As a Special Forces soldier I can relate these imperatives to stories illustrated in the book and apply them to real life situations that I have experienced in the field. The Ugly American is a goldmine of wisdom and a handbook for special warfare. All Special Operations soldiers should read it.
In the opening sequence of My American Cousin (1985), the audience is drawn into the world of the film first through the setting. Starting with a landscape shot of lake, light can be seen coming from a structure on the edge of the coast as the title is drawn across the screen. The shot slowly zooms in to reveal that the building is a secluded home on a lake. A cut brings the viewers indoors, and immediately draws them into the bedroom of a young girl, who’s name is later revealed to be Sandy, lead by her short-lived ‘dear diary’ voiceover. What’s being said in the voiceover is mirrored by a look at what the character is writing; in large print she scribbles, “nothing ever happens”. This line sets up the idea that something memorable is about to happen, but it also brings the question about whether that is just the film following the trope that rural Canada is quaint, and quiet. Elsewhere in the house, Sandy’s mother is turning off lights as she walks from one room to another, and the camera pans to follow her. She stops by her working husband at his desk to ask why he never has enough money. Before he answers, she looks off-screen to tell her children that they should stop playing, turn off the lights and go to sleep. The same shot is held throughout those interactions, and as she walks off screen, her husband rolls his eyes and keeps working. The mother’s character is presented as very strong and in charge, and she is very much in control of this household. Back to Sandy’s
In this poem, America by Tony Hoagland, tells about the way people in America live. Also comparing America to a prison. And tells us the lifestyle we live in America. Which is more important for society to have money in your pocket is more important than anything else. One of the real society is consumerism. Furthermore, try to express that consumerism and big business are robbing Americans. Another thing is that you are a materialist qualify and now a day for what you have. Not by human quality and that affects society. It comments on the value system that puts money ahead of everything and yet does not bring happiness. The poem allows to see the unnecessary amount of consuming in America.
What does it mean to be an American? In my eyes to be an American means to have privileges, rights, and freedom. America isn't perfect, but it is one of the only countries that have rights given to people of different diversities and gender. America does not have tremendous poverty. Instead we have choices given to us by the people who fought and died for the American people. Without George Washington and the other patriots who planted the first seed in the ground and help plant the American nation we live in now who knows what America would be like now.
What does it mean to be an American? In today's day and age, the general perception of an American is to be free, free to practice any religion, free to speak your mind, free in general. However, America has only been able to be perceived as a promised land due to the obstacles and barriers that have been challenged by early Americans. From having to accept others religious beliefs to the abolishment of slavery. A good example is J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur’s Letters from an American Farmer (1782). Letters from an American Farmer is a collection of twelve letters written from the perspective of a fictional character. These letters do a magnificent job at emphasizing on how America is similar to the environment and the people who feed
What it means to be American? Everybody you ask this question to will have a completely different response. Some responses might have similarities but none will be exactly the same. In the beginning of the year my response was “To be an American means having a rich history, having opportunities to better ourselves, and having freedoms.” Unfortunately not everyone has had the same opportunities or freedoms. Native Americans, who are indigenous, dealt with having their freedoms taken away, less opportunities even though they had rich history in this land before it was taken away from them. Look at what Zitkala-Sa endured. Not only that, but African Americans have fought long and hard for freedom and equality as well. W.E.B. Du Bois stood for
Many people dream about being an American. They dream because they envision America as the land of peace and prosperity. But is it? At times it has been, and at times its not. It is hard for the United States to be correct all the time because they have been unwilling designated as the “World Police”. Throughout history there have been examples politically, economically, and socially, where being an American is rewarding and times where it is embarrassing. To be an American means progress. We evolved from a world ruled by white men to a world of equal opportunity.
Since this great country was first established many intuitive minds have tried to answer the question; "What is an American". This country is full of individuals of many backgrounds, and diversities and each person has a different opinion on this question. In my opinion, an American is someone who values freedom and equality and pursues the "American dream." Every American exercises these rights and these are great adjectives to describe our country. Each of the seven readings, and the one image I compiled help mold this broader definition into a more precise description of an American.
What does it mean to be an “American”? To each individual person it means something very different. For the writer Bharati Mukherjee, who wrote the essay, “American Dreamer”, to be a true American someone has to want to be an American, not just prove that they merited citizenship. Her essay “American Dreamer” goes in depth into this idea and her opinion that as an American one should believe in bringing together the cultures in America. “We must think of American culture and nationhood as a constantly reforming, transmogrifying “we” (Mukherjee 438). For the author James Baldwin, who wrote the essay “Stranger in the Village”, an American is a person who is integrated with other cultures, and
Everyone should understand his needs to evaluate his present and plan for his future. We should learn, travel and explore new places and countries. Consorcio in the story “Be American” which written by Carlos Bulosan was too far from his dream The American Dream, he didn't recognize that until the end of the story after 12 years in the USA. To be American, he needs to work a lot to get the language, the culture, the way of eating and thinking. In fact, to be anything rather than your nationality is difficult. To be Egyptian you have to know how to tell jokes and to understand the joke. To be American you have to know the American culture, you have to know the difference between the football and the soccer.
According to Generation Zs to be an American means to have freedom and to be able to make choices that will benefit you, your family and your nation. Walt Whitman shares a similar view of being an american in his poem Song Of The Open Road written in 1856.
The “American dream,” a promise of the ability to turn your life from rags to riches if you try hard in the United States of America, has been the definition of what it means to be an American. But over time it the American dream has changed and its pledge perhaps more viable than ever. This is due to the simple fact that America as a nation has evolved over time and the core values which its people encompass are a reflection of the times. So as an American how do we define ourselves and our nation outside of the American dream? America has been known over time as a “big brother”- protector of mankind. Yet many of our citizens did not have equal rights until the 1960’s and it took the fourteenth amendment to guarantee equal protection
America — a land known for its ideals of freedom and new opportunities, a nation built under the idea that every man and women is created equal. However, the definition of what makes a person an American is entirely different from what it is that makes up America, itself. J.Hector St. John Crevecoeur, author of Letters from an American Farmer (1782), exposes what he believes makes an American. However, when compared to the standards of what makes an American in today’s world, it seems that becoming an American then was much simpler then, than it is today. The definition of an American is always evolving due to the influences of our changing nation. During a simpler time, Crevecoeur defined an American as someone of European
What does it mean to be an American? America is the land of opportunity, with a free society that affords all people unlimited opportunity to compete for success. And in this competition there will be winners and losers, often determined by the choices we make, including the choice of our attitude. In Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, the primary character, Holden Caulfield embodies the dark side of the American dream, by choosing the negative sentiments of judgement, isolation and fear.
