This is an introduction to the Skills Inventory introduced in Chapter 3 of the textbook “Leadership: Theory and Practice” by Peter Northouse, a tool by which one can measure leadership strengths in three major skill areas, Technical, Human & Conceptual (Northouse, 2016). An additional introduction is made to the Leadership Behavior Questionnaire, which measures the type of leadership behavior style one is most likely to practice, the task style or the degree to which you define the roles of others, or the relationship style -the degree to which you attempt to make others feel at ease (2016). Upon taking these two assessments, the responses when combined will indicate my personal leadership philosophy. When analyzed in conjunction with Katz’ Three-Skill Approach, the outcome should be in alignment with the experiential and educational leadership background I possess thus far (Katz, 1955).

Both effective communication and positive relationships require effort, consideration and respect from all parties involved in order to continue to be effective and productive.

It takes a lot to be a leader. It takes experience, communication, positivity, passion, and much more to be an effective leader. Developing leadership abilities early in my life is vital to becoming the person I aspire to be. Having these kinds of skills is something that can help me become a more effective communicator. Communication is necessary in many careers throughout one’s lifetime. Acquiring attributes of a leader

2- Taking self-assessments allow for recognition and understanding concerning one-self and the qualities possessed. Various approaches to leadership, decision-making, and personality traits greatly influence communication, motivation and management abilities within an organization. These skills can be learned and enhanced. Understanding how these styles impact others can empower leaders to increase organizational performance and create an improved work environment. Great leaders have impacted our societies and organizations. They have shared necessary guidelines for increasing leadership skills.

To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.

Being a good leader is done by making the correct choices and inspiring people to complete their tasks and work together as a team. In order to be a great leader you need to think outside the box and travel the road that is seldom or never traveled. A leader is a person who has a vision (Owen, 2002). A leader has drive and is committed to achieving their goals and vision. Leaders focus their attention on problems that need to be fixed, and will tackle the situation at hand. Leaders are determined, motivated, careful planners and effective communicators. Leaders are positive and do not waste time and effort with negativity. Effective communication is more than just being able to speak and write. Leaders are very important and and every action they make possibly affect even one person to be more inspired and help them after watching a leader speak. I remember from experience, this one time everyone had to read their speech they wrote in front of the whole class and this was my first time doing it. I was worried that I wouldn't be good enough at talking in front of everyone, but then one of my fellow students went first and showed me I wouldn't have to be worried. That person inspired me and was a good example of a leader.

It was surprising for me a many information I wasn’t aware of before. I always knew “communication” is one of the factor key of an effective team. In my culture when there is a fight between two group/person they always use communication to resolve the conflict. Lack of communication can cause a lot of misunderstanding. Human being make a lot mistake by only relying on it memory and what they believe to be true. You cannot judge someone without having to communicate with them. The privilege of working with highly influential individuals, and having the opportunity to be continually challenged, are boons to one’s career; consequently, success accompanies failure, and growth as a leader begins. Positive behaviors are reinforced by prompt open recognition, while adverse behaviors are addressed privately and are a cause for self-reflection. Learning from these incidents has shaped the leader I’ve become. Leadership as a definition continually evolves in my world. Notwithstanding, there are elements that remain permanently anchored in this definition, such as respect, purpose, collaboration, heart, trust, and spirit. Carefully managing team synergy, harmonizing their dynamics, and maximizing the advantages of their diversity in order to achieve collective success signifies leadership.

Leadership is not just setting goals and effectively achieving them with one’s team. Leadership is not just brilliant public speaking and great communication skills. If one wants to be an authentic leader, one should have unique contribution to the welfare of the society. One should also make a positive change.

In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.

The sum of education, experiences, and observations lays a foundation upon which I will grow to become a good leader. In this plan, I will focused on those aspects of leadership that I believe are most required for personal development as well as those which will be so significant for my future leadership career. I have identified three goals which will guide me in the development process. My goals are to develop my integrity, listening skills and communications skills. I assume that this plan will change and be altered as required by life circumstances.

Throughout high school, I was fortunate to hold several leadership positions. Being in the leadership group taught me the importance of having a vision and taking initiative in order to lead effectively. But most importantly, it taught me that effective communication is key to good leadership.
