Living Simply Throughout the book “Walden and Other Writings of Henry David Thoreau”, Thoreau argues that living a simple life leads to spiritual independence as well as the freedom from the grind of everyday life. Thoreau emphasizes the fact that simple life enables you to live life instead of merely existing. In order to argue his point, he left his existing lifestyle to live in the woods, provide for himself, saunter, and write daily in his journal. His project was then compiled into short essays to make his case. Thoreau set out to prove in order to live well and be free, one must free himself mentally, and physically from the manual restraints humanity puts upon himself. In “Where I Lived, and What I Lived For”, Thoreau quotes “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life and see if I could not learn what they had to teach, and not, when I came to die, …show more content…

Thoreau quotes this from his selection “Walking” for the purpose of arguing again how humanity needs to enjoy the simple things in life. Thoreau expresses the idea that humanity does not know how to walk. Walking is viewed as a means to get from point A to point B or to improve your physical fitness. However, according to Thoreau, walking which he refers to as the term sauntering is more of a spiritual endeavor. Thoreau further argues his points by stating, ” I am alarmed when it happens that I have walked a mile into the woods bodily, without getting there in spirit” (632), thus showing his belief in spiritual healing sauntering can accomplish. According to Thoreau, sauntering is the ability to leave ones worries behind them and enjoy all God has created for humankind.
