A strong will, high work ethic, and as sense of ambition is what truly makes people great. The desire to constantly better yourself and to work hard for others, just so happens to be left out of some people’s lives, which can be detrimental to themselves as a result; for those who put their everything into everything that they do strike awe in all that see them. In Marge Piercy’s poem “To Be of Use”, she paints the picture of the people whom she wants to be in the company of, which just so happens to be those with strong work ethics. The reason why Piercy most-likely wants to be around people who demonstrate those traits is because people have a tendency of aligning themselves with whomever they stay around the most. Without the hard work of many different people in any society, much of what the world has grown to enjoy and take for granted would simply not exist such as Medical and technological advancements, massive food production, and even literature and other forms of …show more content…
Without hard working farmers and others in the food industry, food would be harder to come by and thus the hunger problem would be all that worse. The simple fact of life is that, “Humanity would not have thrived as a civilization had it not been for our natural ambition to survive in triumphant fashion” (Waters). Without the ambition to better our lives we would have never developed agriculture, a now essential part of our survival. Even hunting and gathering food for one’s family and self is now simple task, one would have to learn how to get used to going without and to dedicate the majority of their time in concentrating on getting enough food to stay alive; even still, there are those with strong enough spirits and work ethic who can successfully accomplish surviving on their
In "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, Walker shows differences in human character, just by the way they act towards family members. The main character in the story, Mother, has two daughters that she treats very differently, and they treat her differently. One daughter looks down on Mother in a condescending manner, and the other is obedient and kind. In "Everyday Use", Walker shows that in relationships between a mother and daughters, adaptation to change can sometimes be very hard, which leads to pride and protecting what one has accomplished, and finally shows how un-appreciation can hinder these relationships.
Based on the output of production, agriculture is perceived as an advance because farmers can produce more food within a smaller area than they could possibly obtain as hunter-gatherers. Harris says that this situation happened since farmers control “the rate of plant reproduction” (Harris 219), which means that immediate adverse consequences could be prevented with the intensification of production. On the other hand, hunter-gatherers, which depend on the availability of natural plants and animals; consequently, can raise their output very little. However, although farmers can produce more food than hunter-gatherers do, the numbers of crops are limited; therefore, when the crops failed, there is risk of starvation.
The Greeks have city states and they were the first democracy, America adopted that idea. The city states had rulers who would protect the people by shielding them in castle like structures with high walls during war. A different idea America adopted from Greece is boys would be enlisted into the military when they became a man and America used the draft in some wars. Something that is different however is Greece unlike America could choose to keep their children or to possibly drop them off the nearest cliff. Despite the differences from Greece, America learned and gained democracy, literature, and history. The history recorded by the Athenians was about the lives they lead and encounters they had. Athenians are one of two types of people
“To be of use” by Marcy Piercy is a poem about commendable and encouraging human actions. Piercy describes hard-working, positive, motivated, reliable people that not only inspire themselves, but each person that comes across their life path. She explains how people who maximize their capabilities tend to live fulfilling lives. These types of people have goals in life and stick to them without giving up when obstacles come across them. This poem includes imagery, figures of speech (including metaphors and similes), alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeias, and connotations. Hard workers in life achieve more goals and complete more actions, while showing others around them that hard work pays off in the end.
After starting a career with H&R Block back in 1988 as well as working with tax professionals all over the United States including Puerto Rico, many tax professionals are very passionate individuals. Leadership roles are the social glue that holds a district together. Since leaders in this role are responsible for reaching the organizational goals this position has the most influence over employees that touch the client first hand (Arnold, Connelly, Walsh, & Martin Ginis, 2015). Tax professional retention is important to the organization due to various reasons. The main two are knowledge and client retention.
The capability to withstand water shortages and the havoc caused by the harvest passes makes the plants to mature early with its productivity level being high. Regions suffering from food shortages can only undergo starvation for short period before it can start to enjoy the food. On the other hand, the abovementioned advantages make farmers engage in profitable farming business with the low level of costs of farm inputs and high outputs. This aspect benefits not only the farmers but also the population that stands to enjoy a large variety of food stuff at their disposal.
Times have changed, and so has the family, the community and our environment. And these changes have impacted our lives and earth immeasurably. This is where the factor greed comes in to play, the need for more. This need for more called for extensive measures, measures like fertilizers, pesticides and equipment to work the ground and harvest the crops became necessity. Agriculture became a booming business that did not and still does not promote the well-being of the employee nor the individual let alone the family unit and community. Since 1950 an average farm size has doubled, but the number of laborers decreased substantially and the number of small local farmers has been cut in half. Farmers have been forced to become more efficient and there 's been a reliance on greater chemicals and technology, which has become very extensive and expensive. Sadly, what has been short term expansion has become a long-term threat (Trautmann, 2012). This greed driven increase has led to subtle damaging ramifications that most people are ignorant to. Their needs are being met as quality is being forsaken. Our environment is being squandered. Selfishness abounds.
Many factors contribute to the food insecurity faced by many American’s today. Poverty seems to attribute to the hunger crisis more drastically than anything else. More specifically, unequal distribution of wealth is the principle cause of hunger. The world does in fact produce enough food to feed everyone, the issues is that income is not distributed is in such a way that everyone can afford or have access to food.
World hunger is one of the many dire problems facing the human race. Although the common person probably won't have a big impact on ending world hunger, but by being aware of the issues you become empowered. It is first necessary discuss some other the myths about the reasons for world hunger. World hunger is not caused by population increase, but it is one of the factors. The global grain production is high enough to
“Look, there’s Empire State Building!” exclaimed my mother as we drove across the George Washington Bridge.
In our country, the scarcity of food is not an issue of underdeveloped methods of agriculture, it is an issue of poverty. We have an abundance of
Marge Piercy's poem "To Be of Use" expresses an opposing connotation about the idea of work. Most people believe the words "hard work" carry a negative connotation. What these words imply is not something that is generally received with enthusiasm but is often accepted either by force or obligation. The poem’s central theme is that satisfaction and self-fulfillment can be attained by using one's skills to serve a specific function in life, for it is the opinion of the speaker that an unproductive existence has no value or significance because it is vain, and pointless. Piercy uses figurative language, imagery, description, symbolism, and details to develop this theme throughout the poem.
If people didn’t have farming and agricultural production they wouldn’t have all the different sorts of food products they do, nor would they be as abundant. Life would be like it was before the Industrial Revolution came about and most of us would still be growing our own food and barely scraping by in life.
In the past ten years the world population exceeded six billion people with most of the growth occurring in the poorest, least developed countries in the world. The rapidly increasing population and the quickly declining amount of land are relative and the rate at which hunger is increasing rises with each passing year. We cannot afford to continue to expand our world population at such an alarming rate, for already we are suffering the consequences. Hunger has been a problem for our world for thousands of years. But now that we have the technology and knowledge to stamp it out, time is running short.
Poor agricultural infrastructure causes hunger because the lack of roads, warehouses, and irrigation causes higher transportation costs, a deficiency of storage facilities, and unreliable water supplies. To improve the agricultural infrastructure, however, it would cost a profuse amount of money, which would put the country in greater debt and result in less funding for essential systems, such as health care, which already has too little funding.
