This report is an analysis of business intelligence systems currently available to our business. As an introduction, I will address in general terms why we need to purchase a business intelligence system and how it will aid our business. Then I will discuss several applications in detail, paying particular attention to the information and analysis capabilities of each, and the hardware and software required for each. Finally, I will conclude with a short evaluation of the products discussed and offer a recommendation as to the best application for our business. In a SAP environment, the Cognos application helps consolidate and make more efficient the reporting, planning, and scorecarding functions. Finally, in an Oracle environment the Cognos application effectively combines with already existing Oracle and PeopleSoft databases, gateways, and applications to allow for a virtually seamless integration. From an integration standpoint, Cognos seems to be the business intelligence application that readily fits into almost any existing environment. I looked at IBM next. IBM is a well-recognized and established name in Information Technology. It offers a broad business intelligence application capability, so consequently we need to decide exactly where our data management needs really lie. IBM can offer wide-ranging consulting services from incorporating specific software applications to solve specific needs, to totally overhauling our already existing IT architecture and business intelligence system to make it more efficient. As already stated, IBM relies on Cognos for some of its business intelligence applications and these seem to be easily integrated with almost any other environment. Additionally, Cognos offers the most popular OLAP software used today. Oracle was the next company that I looked at. As already stated above, Oracle is closely associated with Hyperion applications, although it does offer a very comprehensive business

BI deduces the connections between business entities by evaluating copious volumes of historical data which supports decisions. BI has four major components consisting of a data warehouse, business analytics, business performance management, and a user interface.

Summit’s old legacy systems used separate systems for orders and financials, so the data could not be easily combined for business intelligence reporting and analysis. In 2010, Summit implemented SAP’s NetWeaver BW data warehouse and business intelligence solution to make better use of the data in its ERP system. These tools have helped the company evaluate the profitability of its sales channels, using what-if scenarios. For instance, Summit is now able to analyse profitability by sales person, manufacturer, customer or branch. business intelligence findings have encouraged Summit to focus more attention to areas such as sales order quotations and to supplier performance and delivery times. Management has much greater visibility into how the organisation is operating and is able to make better decisions.
To aid financial and performance reporting in the company, its objectives also include achieving a harmonious user adoption of the Business Intelligence technology across all departments within the firm. IT department also aims to support and maintain the IT operations including software installations, network security, and telecommunications. Another major IT objective is to build a formal assessment process for company’s overall information management requirements, which will help in leveraging parent company’s IT resources. All these IT objectives align with and in turn, will help achieve the business objective of seamless integration.
Traditionally, business intelligence (BI) has been used as an umbrella term to describe the concepts and methods to improve business decision making by using fact-based decision support systems. BI also includes the underlying architectures, tools, databases, applications, and methodologies. BI’s major objectives are to enable interactive and easy access to diverse data, enable manipulation and transformation of these data, and provide business managers and analysts the ability to conduct appropriate analyses and perform the actions [Turban et al. 2008; Wixom et al. 2011]. Successful BI initiatives have been reported for major industries, from healthcare and airlines, to major IT and telecommunication firms [Anderson-Lehman et al. 2004; Carte et al. 2005; Turban et al. 2008].

Business Intelligence is all about decision making with a data driven approach. It is a broader term and a super set containing tools, architectures, technologies and techniques that leverage insights from data (various problems or business processes) for analysis, querying, reporting and performance improvement. It is based on measuring or analyzing the historical data and past performance for driving insight and answers to questions like “What occurred?”, “How frequently is occurred?” and “Its impact?”. It includes processes and techniques for data collection, data analysis, data sharing, and reporting using dashboards, illustrative reports and interactive visualizations that laymen understand, all in the service better data driven decision making.

Analytics and business intelligence (BI) are not new concepts in the market place, but the exponential growth of offerings, lower total cost of ownership (TCO), and simplified deployment options have made these solutions a necessity for modern businesses. Some customers continue to use a comprehensive stack of a database, extract-transfer-load (ETL) tools, an analytics engine, and a reporting interface from a single vendor, placing much of the burden on IT to keep operations running and produce reports. However, many businesses are finding success with a different model based on smaller-scale deployments of self-service or embedded analytics and data discovery tools directly to end users.

In the United States, 500 enterprises which have more than 90% of enterprises use business intelligence software to help managers make decisions. In this report essay, we talk about the back ground of business intelligence first, and then defined business intelligence from different aspects, which are technology, application and data. In the part
