My artwork is an appropriation of Henri de Toulouse’s La Toilette which I decided to reflect my own ideas of a personal experience of mine, which is the topic of tattoos. I feel that in our generation tattoos are more widely accepted by the younger generation but in my experience not with the older generation. My parents have a strong dislike towards tattoos and have told me that I would regret them and forever remind me of a bad mistake I made. But as I grew older I developed my own opinions on tattoos and have accepted them as pieces of art. I wanted to show through this painting that tattoos can still be soft and delicate which is the same feeling I receive when looking at La Toilette. Moderation is important when discussing tattooing and piercings. When tattooing, piercings, and body modifications began to alter the overall appearance of the individual, the individual would be considered deviant by majority of society. There are many individuals in the United States that have tattoos and piercings, but majority of the people have tattoos that can be concealed or tattoos and piercings that are not gaudy. Doing my senior project I found out that just doodling a Tattoo is difficult because you wouldn’t want it to be flat or too simple, so you have to really but in detail and attempt to put in depth to help your piece come to life even before it’s on skin, What I did was I put in a different color where the bottom area of the tentacle is and tried to do highlighting with some silver to give more depth. My mentor assisted me with ideas also with her Tattoo in general.
The rising popularity of tattoos and body piercing is more than just the latest fashion craze. This type of body art has been a part of this world for thousands of years. Tattoos and piercings have served as amulets, status symbols, declarations of love, signs of religious beliefs, adornments and even forms of punishment (Smithsonian.com). In the later years (1940 – 2000) tattoos and piercings were more common among teenagers and young adults, but now, people of all ages are expressing themselves through body art. The title given to my artwork taken of my father is called ‘Dragon’. The title was chosen as the tattoo on my fathers left arm is clearly visible in the photo. The dragon tattoo on my fathers arm is a representation of him, protecting his loved ones, my two sisters and myself. His tattoo along with the contrast of yellow and blue stand out within the piece creating focal points. This essay describes the job of a tattoo parlor and the tattoo artist, and the interaction between the artist and the customer. The description is of a normal day where I visit Blue Moon Tattoo, watch a lady being tattooed, and receive a tattoo of my own. I describe the complete day in the parlor, from watching a woman find the perfect tattoo, to watching her getting the tattoo. Along with the description, the main point of this essay is to explain how people can actually be comfortable with a tattoo artist and be comfortable with needles being poked into their body. A small amount of interaction between the artist and the customer makes the tattoo have a bit of personality, and a memorable experience.

The tattoo is a very old form of body modification, but in spite of that there is still a certain rejection towards those who carry them in a visible area of the body, for some it disfigures what has been created in the image and likeness of God while for others associates this with convicts or gang members mainly because they were one of the first groups to use tattoos to differentiate themselves from the rest of society. But also it is true that there is a very limited understanding about this corporal modification that could be one of the reasons why it can not be appreciated as for how it should be. However, modern society reflects the current popularity of tattooing because it has acquired an entirely artistic meaning to a social expression and a way of identity.
