According to a study done by CNN, as many as one in eight teens within the United States have taken the virginity pledge (Tamkins, 2008). This means that they took the opportunity and are making a written or verbal commitment and promising to refrain from sexual activities until marriage. But officially, the virginity pledge states that “Believing that true love waits, I make a commitment to God, myself, my family, my friends, my future mate and my future children to be sexually abstinent from this day until the day I enter a biblical marriage relationship” (True Love Waits, n.d). For the most part, typically this reason is an individual’s religion and belief (Kim and Rector, 2009). “Signing a virginity pledge is a solemn vow for individuals with strong religious commitment but that it has much less meaning for those with low religious commitment” (Landor 2013). For individuals with a high viewpoint on religion, having the approval of their higher up is everything. For them, having sex is a sin, which is something that is not allowed, especially as a Christian. An individual with these kinds of viewpoints are more likely to keep their pledge strictly because this is what they believe; in the case of religion, virginity pledging can be an effective type of birth control (Bersamin, 2005). But what happens when an individual decides to make the pledge, but isn’t fully committed to their church or religion? It is said that if the pledge is made privately for oneself rather than publicly, an individual is more likely to keep their commitment. When someone strongly believes in something, they will do everything in their power to keep that promise to their self. Another reason why someone would make this promise is for the feeling of self-worth or accomplishment. It is thought that God will love you more and be so proud of you; this individual will also live a much happier marriage life with someone you weren’t meant to be with.
