“Two Ways to Belong in America” Essay This is the story of my parents, who have been together for over 20 years, but approach change in different ways. My mom embraces it and my dad doesn’t. My mom, like many other Hispanics who have moved to a foreign, distinct country, wishes to incorporate herself into the country. My dad doesn’t, he prefers to keep his roots. My dad moved to the U.S. about 5 years ago in pursuit of freedom like many other Cubans before him. My mom and I followed about a year later when we could leave. When they left, they had the same opinions on traditions, politics, social issues, and goals. However, I surmise that they did not discuss how they were planning to fit in and adjust to the change or to what degree they would do so, or else they would have seen how much they differed. My dad got a job as a truck driver after his brother helped him learn to drive trucks, as getting a job is always arduous when the person is new …show more content…

When my dad had started driving out of state, and had to deliver the contents of the trailer in his truck, he faced this problem several times. The main case was when the G.P.S. sent him through the wrong streets (trucks are large), or when it sent him close to the place, but not exactly to the place. When he asked people for directions in his very accented and basic English, lots of people either mocked him or just ignored him, and he had to communicate basically through signs and the name of the place, or keep going until he found someone who might try and help him. For my mom, on the other hand, it happened when she was working in a dry cleaner, where customers who spoke Spanish, only spoke to her in English, just to, and this is me speculating, watch her attempt and fail to speak
