A Cuban Nurse
This piece contains an interview conducted via Facebook messenger to Evelyn Leon. She is a current Cuban nurse. She had a very limited Internet access, but the most important information has been collected. This paper contains her scope of practice, primary health concern for patients and country, professional organizations, salary, specialty, and health care division.
Scope of Practice
Ms. Leon, a Cuban nurse, says that in Cuba the nursing scope of practice is based on the level of study achieved. There are two levels of studies in nursing which are: “Técnico Medio en enfermería and Licenciatura en enfermería”. Likewise, in the United States of America (USA) they are the Associate Degree in nursing and the Bachellor of Science in nursing, respectively. She also explained that nurses with an ADN are the ones who will work directly with patient care. Like nurses in the USA, Cuban nurses give medication via oral, intramuscular, and intravenous route. They perform all type of wound care and even remove stitches. They insert and remove Foley catheters. In contrast with nurses in the USA, they do CNA tasks all of the time as well since there is not nursing assistant’s help at all. Here in the USA the nurses have knowledge about patient hygiene, which is included in our training; however, the most probable is that we delegate it to our assistant. In contrast, Cuban nurses do not insert nasogastric tubes. Neither, their scope of practice includes head to toe
