An on-site corporate gym “is implemented by an employer. The goal of corporate fitness is to increase the amount of physical activity that an employee gets” (Bates). Giving employees easy access to gym equipment and classes helps them release stress and can keep them happier. In fact, physically active people are less likely to be overweight, have fewer chronic health conditions, and lower stress levels. On-site gyms can also benefit the corporation itself by increasing productivity, lowering health care costs, and decreasing the amount of sick days an employee takes (Pozen). Since most American work thirty-three hours per week, making time for fitness can become a challenge. The obvious solution is to offer gyms right at work. That way, employees will be able to workout and get their work done all at the same time. Overall, on-site fitness is necessary for businesses and their employees.
On an individual level, convenient exercise can make a drastic difference in someone’s life. For example, an employee’s life changed when she was able to lose “more than 100 pounds at her company fitness center,” (Shellenbarger). Like her, thousands of people nationwide have the ability to lose weight while still being in their workplace. Also, a healthy and confident employee tends to inspire confidence in others around them, creating a better environment in a company. Not only are on-site gyms convenient, they are also usually free and can save someone hundreds of dollars on a gym membership. On average, gym memberships can cost anywhere from $30-$110 per month or $200-$500 for a yearly membership (Gym Membership Cost). Also, by paying for the gym, the employer can count on the employee to be at work more often and therefore get more work done for them. On-site corporate gyms are convenient and usually free and can save employees lots of money.
