Organizational structure refers to the way that an organization arranges people and jobs so that its work can be performed and its goals can be met. According to USA their structure states in order to provide clear alignment and focus for the planning process of USAA’s organizational structure, a planning team was assembled with strategic-thought leaders to author a strategic market outlook.
Having organizational structure also entails having what is called an organization chart. An organization chart is a diagram that shows the structure of an organization and the relationships and relative ranks of its parts and positions/jobs. Sherill believes you need an organization chart so that you are aware of who to report to. Where Sherill is currently employed, has not had anything set up this way in a few years. People are not sure who they are to report to and often report to whoever they feel like. She has seen a few employees leave the company for other jobs because they felt that their job lacked structure and it was difficult for them to work in a place like that.
The structure of an organization is very important because it determines the different roles and how all the departments perform. The organizational structure consists of a group of people that works together to achieve the goals that are implemented.
Structure is the basis through which an organization seeks to create control the direction of an organization. This is completed through clear definitions of the allocation of work, differentiation, and the coordination of having those responsibilities working together towards the efforts of the organization, integration (Bolman & Deal, 1993, pp). Through these methods, the organization is able to devise a division of labor that collaborates to bring about the missions and goals of an organization. The structure that comes about from this can be varied in their rigidness and flexibility it allows, and to an extent this is a great contribution to its success.
Every type of company or organization that exists operates with a certain organizational structure. However, the organizational structure is tailored to best meet the needs and services of the company. Organizational structures are used as a means of communicating how business will take place within an organization. The structure of an organization is important to the main areas that make an organization function effectively. Organization functions and designs determine the organizational structure. Memphis City Schools has a horizontal organizational structure. Although a horizontal structure exists as the overall structure at the executive level, a vertical structure is also in place at the management/staff level.
Organisations must organise a structure so that their objectives can be achieved. A company will have different departments and procedures with each one having a special function. All of these organised departments and procedures are linked so the company can run efficiently. For many organisation this can be very complex has they will have offices in international countries around the world.
Lippitt’s Phases of Change is an extension of Lewin’s Three-Step Theory. The focus on Lippitt’s change theory is on the change agent rather than the change itself.
After reviewing and researching the literature with respect to organizational changes, I have come to the conclusion that organizations have always changed. When everything in the world is changing, organization cannot remain islands. They must change to face new challenges. Bolman and Deal (2008) claim organizations have changed about as much as in past few decades as in the preceding century. Bolman and Deal (2008) claim means that the change organizations have experienced in the last decade are almost similar to those they experience in at the end of the twentieth century.
Process‐driven change seeks to create a context and environment in which employees at all levels of
Health care organizations that choose to convert to an electronic medical record system (EMR) have several advantages; most important it increases patient safety, efficiency, cost-effectiveness and security. Accepting such a transition also presents with its share of challenges like preparing for the required significant time obligation and resources that will make the transition a successful one. Leadership and management must create an atmosphere that will get the buy-in of all stakeholders. Providing information about the process and what methods will be best to make the conversion to an EMR system is an important aspect of the implementation
Management and leadership are viewed as two different perspectives in the business environment. As described by Dr. Warren Bennis ‘Managers are people who do things right, while leaders are people who do the right thing’, this means that managers do things by the set rules and follow company policy, while leaders follow their own intuition, which may in turn be of more benefit to the company.
I had the honor of standing in for our Acting Chief of Surgery at a recent VISN 22 tele-meeting, with all of the hospitals in the VISN reporting to the VISN Chief. It is a bit like roll call, with each center waiting their turn, then detailing their report for each topic and then being cross-examined for under-performances or violations. There were a few congratulatory comments and questions regarding how certain VA centers were doing so well in some areas as well. I agree there is a definite need for oversight in this government organization which deals with people’s lives on a daily basis. This helps us to focus on being transparent, fixing our inadequacies and exceling in all
Manager’s of an organization has to use structure to help the company run efficiently. “The five types of organizational structures are functional, divisional, matrix, team-based, and virtual network” (Draft, 2013, p.316). Functional structure in an organization that is developed by grouping departments by the skills, level of knowledge, activities done daily, and the resource used. “This structure places specific departments from the bottom to the top” (Draft, 2013, p.318). For example, specific departments such as: human resources, accounting, engineering, and manufacturing are placed at the top, while there are mostly seen at the bottom in other organizations. While common functions such as; people, facilities, and other resources are combined together as a single department instead of being divided into multiple departments.

Just like anything in life, markets and cultures change which require constant attention and preparation.
