Steroids in Sport The human body naturally produces substances that are commonly known as steroids. To keep the body running smoothly, steroids such as Vitamin D, cholesterol, estrogen, and cortisone are needed. Corticosteroids are normally made by the adrenal glands located on the top of each kidney. It is often prescribed for a major variety of conditions to help reduce inflammation and to let the immune system relax. Specific hormones that the body cannot produce automatically can be replaced by corticosteroids. An example of the body not being able to manufacture hormones itself, would be the Addison’s disease. In the late 1930’s anabolic steroids were created primarily to act towards giving treatment to who had delayed puberty, some types of impotence, wasting of the body caused by HIV infections, hypogonadism and other disease. Hypogonadism is when the body does not produce an adequate amount of testosterone for normal growth development and sexual functioning. During that time, scientists discovered that they could manipulate the growth of skeletal muscles in laboratory animals and this led to body builders, weightlifters and athletes in numerous sports to abuse the use of steroids for personal benefits. The outcome of sports contests can be affected dramatically because the abuse of steroids has become so widespread. Athletes who abuse anabolic steroids have different methods to use these. They can take them orally, inject them into the muscles, and apply it to the skin as a cream, gel, or patch. the dosage amounts that are taken are 10 to 100 times higher than what is usually prescribed by a medical practitioner to treat a condition.
