Convenience foods features food that is quick, easy to obtain and consume. The company divides its products in 3 different categories; 1. Food-to-go products. 2. Chilled prepared meals. 3. Longer-shelf-life components. The company produces approximately 450 million sandwiches and 150 million pre-made meals per year. Origin, history, nowadays Greencore officially was founded in 1991. Before that the company was under Irish governmental ownership under the name of “Irish Sugar Company “(established in 1934). After an acquisition, where they purchased the producers of commodities such as grain, prepared food and frozen foods, the company started to grow. When Greencore was privatized back in 1991, they continued making deals to refine its focus and particularly using acquisitions to access new customers. By 2008, Greencore was a major U.K. supplier of private label convenience food, with dominance in the sandwich category. In that same year Greencore started operating in the U.S. market. This in the beginning wasn’t without risk. Due to the challenging U.S. market and the lack of assets in the same market like Chilled logistics systems and supplier retailer relationships, Greencore had shifted its strategy to the foodservice and convenience channels.
