A primary responsibility of any leader is to help build talent. In order for a company to grow and prosper, it is important that individuals are in the right roles and are given the best opportunities. In Encouraging the Heart, James Kouzes and Barry Posner explore the caring side of leadership. They show that caring is an effective skill when it comes to successful leadership, but is also one of the most difficult to master. Kouzes and Posner studied and communicated with successful leaders and identified seven essentials for encouraging the heart. Setting a clear standard, expecting the best, and paying attention are the three practices that will be discussed.

Feedback can help individuals in an organization stay engaged and let them know how they are doing along the way. Feedback is important to have, especially when goals are involved. Having goals without feedback can affect an individual’s motivation to complete said goal. In the case of the individual working in the restaurant, their company's goal is to focus on growing profit. If goals are not being met, it is important to give feedback to the individual on what they can do to help them reach the company's shared goal. It is also important to communicate what they have done well, such as high pub sales, which bring great profits to the business. Clear expectations can help shape what is needed to be done. Leigh Richards, author of “How Effective Communication Will Help an Organization,” discusses how effective communication is critical to any successful business (Richards, n.d.). Richards discusses how clear expectations will convey how the employee's performance will impact the company and give them an indication of what is needed to be done to achieve positive feedback. Take the case of the restaurant employee with the low bar sales. The manager communicated with her about how her sales were low, however, her pub sales were actually high. In order for the manager to have a clear expectation set in place, he or she should give tips on how to upsell the items on the menu to help increase their sales. An effective leader focuses on people and therefore empathises with them. Empathy is the tool of emotional intelligence which successful leaders apply. When individuals realise that their feelings and concerns are being acknowledged they develop a sense of trust which fosters a strong relationship based on loyalty to the leader - that way people’s hearts are worn to the cause of the leader. Thus, shared values are identified that sustain the quest of vision and purpose as Gill (2006:82) alludes to. He further mentions that all visioning, strategic thinking and goal setting without effective emotional intelligence are impotent.
The employee should know where he/she stands in obtaining performance goals. Thus, providing feedback is an integral part of the task. The feedback should be delivered to the employee to motivate the employee but also help him/her identify any weakness in his/her performance and to help contribute to growth. At my job, we receive feedback, letting us know that we exceeded the standards for call wait times or if we have not met this standard. Feedback also goes back to the management in that they become aware of the situations.

Feedback is important as it sets up targets; the person knows what to improve. It motivates people and helps them to focus. It helps identifying the strengths and weaknesses. It expresses what is important to the organisation and the job and reduces uncertainties in people.

It is impossible to escape the message here that if people work with leaders who encourage the heart, they feel better about themselves. Their self-esteem goes up. These leaders set people's spirits free, often inspiring them to become more than they ever thought possible. This, indeed, may be our ultimate mission as leaders.
A leader who is self-aware and manages their own emotions has the ability to recognize and handle other people’s emotions and can influence others to want to follow them (Clawson, n.d). A leader who possess the skills of self-awareness and regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills knows just how important this connection is (Clawson, n.d.). These skills will help to develop, influence, and motivate others towards achieving the organizational goals (Clawson, n.d).
