“Growth through challenge”, was the motto used Sara Tarbay (adapted from the Devil Pups youth-citizenship development program) to describe the development of her writing experience over the past few years. Writing has never been her favorite activity to do throughout the day, but the instilled self-discipline in her put there by the Pups has challenged her mentally enough to overcome any obstacle. In overcoming obstacles in her writing, she has established experiences with many literacies, with both good and bad proficiencies that contribute to what she has to offer for this class. When Tarbay had completed the Pups program se had developed a strong feeling of personal pride and self-confidence; which was able to translate to whatever task was at hand. Whether it was chores, going to school, or writing essays there wasn’t a narrow minded way to look at the task anymore. “I remember an immense feeling of possibility at the idea, as if I had been ushered into a vast building filled with closed doors and had been given leave to open any I liked.” (King 28). Like Stephen King, Tarbay had been exposed to a new way of thinking. Chores had become maintaining a nice environment, school had become a place to enhance her future, and essays had become fluency on paper. From then on writing for her was another practice that carried with her everywhere. From essays to emails she kept formalities in her writing to allow herself to develop her skills on an everyday basis. Although it
