“The lost boys. That was what they were being called in America the boys who had lost their homes and families because of the war and had wandered, lost, for weeks or months at a time before reaching the refugee camps”(91). Linda Sue Park wrote a novel based on one of these boys called “A long walk to water.” Salva Dut was a boy alone in Sudan and becomes a survivor by also becoming a leader, adapting to situations, and overcoming dangerous obstacles. Salva was a “lost boy” in a big world that had many problems, but he overcomes them by helping others as a leader (91). Salva’s uncle was the leader of the group he was staying in and he shared all the food he got to the group, “but it seemed they had all forgotten that, for now Salva now had to beg for scraps, which were given grudgingly”(67). Salva was alone now because his uncle was killed in the war, so after he died, the group did not treat him with the same respect that Salva had to his uncle. Much later, after Salva became alone again and was left to fend for himself, “Salva had become the leader of a group of about fifteen hundred boys”(80). After Salva got older the group looked to him to lead them to the new refugee camps because the camps in Sudan were closing. As Salva became the leader of the boys he didn’t just walk with them, he helped them personally “Salva would talk to them, encourage them, coax and persuade them”(81). Salva was a true leader because he actually helped the group like his uncle by talking to them, sharing with them, and showing them the way to get what they need, he also showed them how to adapt to situations. Salva was one of the many who faced multiple situations in America and to overcome them he adapted to them. Salva was in so many camps that he heard the aid workers talk and get a little english down “but after so many years in the camps, Salva could understand a little english”(86). Michael was an Irish aid worker that helped Salva a little english and teach him some letters to memorize. Salva had gone to America because he was chosen to go “now Salva’s arms were piled with new clothes. Underwear, socks, sneakers. A pair of long pants. A t-shirt and a long-sleeved shirt to wear on top of it “(92). Salva got into America
“Mawien Dut sprinkles water on his son’s head, the Dinka way of blessing someone who was lost.” This reveals that Salva’s father and Salva have made it. The protected land in Africa. This also shows both of them being delighted and speechless to see each other. No words could come out of their mouths. Sobs of joy between both of them. Infinity love between both of them. Success between both of them. Amazement. Joy. LOVE. Additionally, they were one family again and were safe from the 21-year old civil war. If you look closely through the lenses of culture, you could see Dinka family members pouring water over their kid’s head. Later in the novel, Salva, delightful and solicitous. Began helping the other big tribe; the Nuer. The tribe killed his Uncle. The tribes have been fighting with his tribe for hundreds of years. The tribes have many similarities. Salva has helped make the Nuer think. “The Dinka and the Nuer were enemies-had been for hundreds of years. Why would a Dinka bring water to us?” This shows, Salva was resourceful to everyone in Southern Sudan. He gave everyone in Southern Sudan the right resources to eat and drink. Even his worst enemies. This also shows that Salva changed hundreds of lives in Southern Sudan. Furthermore, this idea makes people’s mind change about killing the other big tribe. If you look closely through the lens of place, you could see everyone feel joyful. Lucky. And mostly caring. This all happens
In the novel “A long walk to water” by Linda Sue Park, Salva, a young man that lived in South Sudan throughout his childhood to his young-adult years, had faced many difficult challenges the young age of eleven. Salva had to flee from home because of Sudan’s civil war. He soon experienced a horrifying and dreadful life, his family gone, no resources in his group, he watched people die, walked for months, and lead twelve hundred boys to a refugee camp in Kenya. Salva survived this terrible life with the help of three factors, perseverance, luck, and relationships with others. Without any of these factors, Salva might not have been able to survive or possibly become the leader he is today.
In A Long Walk to Water, Linda Sue Park tells a story about one out of a thousand Southern Sudan lost boys named, Salva. Salva is a boy who ran away during the Southern Sudanese War. Salva moves from country to country to get away from this war. During the war he loses touch of his family. Salva soon escapes the war, now he’s trying to find his way to safety. Salva was able to survive In A Long Walk to Water, by having bravery, courage, and showing grit.
It took 648 miles to walk from Southern Sudan to Ethiopia. Salva did this on an empty stomach with no food or water. Do you think you would survive in a 100 degree weather with no food or water, with the same cloths that you been wearing for a year? Because salva did. In the book “A Long Walk to Water” written by Linda Sue park, she talks about Salva's journey that took years and years to get to safety after the war stated. The war came to his village while he was in school he had to run to the bush with not knowing where is his family or even knowing if they are alive. Salva was running from the war for 24 years before he finally found safety in the united states. He was 11 when he started to run, he met a friend along the way but he sadly died due to being eaten by a lion. He also meant his uncle along the way which help Salva gain confidence that he was going to make it out alive, but again the uncle passed away due to three men shooting him, because he was trying to keep everyone safe. In this essay I am going to prove that we can learn to never give up even if things are at the worst point possible and if you take things one step at a time you will get through whatever you are struggling with. The key aspects I am going to be talking about are how did Salva learn never give up and even when salva is at his worst he never gives up and still has hope that he is going to make it out alive. My first body paragraph I am explaining how salva never gave up.
