A Night Divided
By: Jennifer A. Nielsen
The book “A Night Divided,” is a great book. It is about a girl named Gerta and her family. She has an older brother Fritz, a brother Dominic, her father (papa) and her mother Frau Lowe. The Berlin Wall had just gone up after the Second World War separating East and West Germany, and her and her family live in the West. One night her brother Dominic and her father decide they need to get through the wall for work without guards noticing because the consequences could be deadly. Her brother and Father make it across but they cannot find a way to come back because the wall has been added on and is even more dangerous now. Gerta ends up not being able to talk to her father or brother for at least 4 years. One day Gerta was walking to school with her best friend Anna when she see’s her brother, Dominic on the other side of the wall and waves. She eventually ended up seeing her dad to but then she got caught by an officer by the name of Officer Muller. She ended up getting away from the Officer but she knew he would be watching her every move from now on. But everyday when she goes to school she see’s them on the platform and her dad is doing a dance that he always did for her as a kid when they were little. But, he continues doing the digging scene from the dance trying to give her a signal that he wants her to do something or he is going to do something. But if Gerta tries to cross that wall it could be deadly and we don’t know what would happen.
The three main characters of the book are Gerta, her brother Fritz, and Anna which is Gerta’s best friend. Gerta is the main character and she is very determined, brave and loves her family very much and wants them all together again. Fritz is Gerta’s older brother who has her back and is with her for everything. He is a hard working man and will have to go and be a soldier if they do not make it to the other side of the wall in time. Anna is Gerta’s best friend and they always are there for each other. When one day Anna’s older brother Peter tried to escape and Gerta knew that Peter was going to escape but did not tell Anna and their best friend relationship could be
Suicide can sometimes feel like the only way to pacify the pain. It is as if something is eating away parts of you slowly and intently and the only way to relieve the constant pain, is to die. Tiffany Hunter and Pierre L’errant are two very different characters with both equally unique yet queer personalities. Although Pierre and Tiffany are not the best of friends, their contrasting characteristics somehow complement each other. They both have similarities in their plans of suicide as well as differences that help them make the correct decision on where they want their life to go in future. Although they both made different decisions at the end, they assisted each other to settle on the right choice. Drew Hayden Taylor develops a theme of despondency and isolation from peers and loved ones in the novel “The Night Wanderer.”
My book report is for A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen. I chose this book because it describes the life of a twelve year old girl during the Great Berlin Wall. This book is about a young girl named Greta who is separated from her father and brother because of the Berlin Wall. One day Greta gets a message from her father. She thinks he wants her to start digging a tunnel. Greta finds and old abandoned building where she starts digging. Greta and her brother Fritz work long, tireless, never-ending days digging. One day there was someone of the other side of the tunnel, it was Papa. Once the tunnel was completed they set through it, escaping the treacherous East side, to the colorful bright West.
This book that I read is called “The Night Divided” by Jennifer A. Nielsen. This story takes place in East Germany right after the government decided to put a wall up to separate the country in half. With the sudden rise of the Berlin Wall, twelve year old Gerta, the main character of the story, finds her family divided overnight. Gerta’s brothers were Fritz, who was the older brother in the group at 14 years old at the time and Dominic, who was the second oldest. Which means that Gerta was left as the younger sibling. Their father, Papi a.k.a Aldous, was involved with some rebellion against the government. Though he had never been arrested for anything, the Stasi, their secret police, keeps coming to their house every few months to ask him
Gerta’s family consists of five people not including Gerta; those people are her mom, dad, two brothers, and grandma. Her mom is named Catherina, her dad's name is Aldous Lowe, her oldest brother is named Fritz, her younger brother’s name is Dominic and her grandmother's name is Oma Gertrude. After the Berlin Wall was created, Gerta lived only with her mom and her oldest brother Fritz since her youngest brother and her dad were stuck in the West Berlin looking for a job. Her grandmother lived in the countryside in East Berlin, the only time Gerta’s mother went to see her was when Oma Gertrude broke her leg and needed attention. Gerta’s only friend through out the book was Anna.
For such a small word, “Family,” can mean so much. In a dictionary one may read family as people with common ancestors, but a true family is people who stick together and support one another at any cost. Both books, Night by Elie Wiesel, and, Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand display the theme of family relationships throughout the story.
The novel The Secret River written by Kate Grenville and the film One Night the Moon directed by Rachael Perkins both use conventional features such as symbolism, characterisation and features particular to the text type to highlight the differing views between Europeans and Aborigines over land, conflict and tragedy which ensues due to these differing attitudes. Grenville portrays the European society eager for a fresh start in Australia, but conflict with the traditional land owners is ongoing. Both Grenville and Perkins present readers and viewers with the challenging question of why respective cultures had differing attitudes to the use and meaning of the land, urging us to remove ourselves from restrictions such as culture and tradition and view the issue objectively.
After reading, Breaking Night by Liz Murray, it left me in all, in a swing of emotions but thrilled in the end. To listen to Liz struggle and pain that she endured as a child and being homeless during her teenage years made me look a life in a whole different way and made me appreciate my life so much more. I could never imagine going through the obstacles Liz was thrown with, such as, drug addictive parents with AIDS, the pressure of taking care of everyone but herself, juggling school and more. It made me realize that my life isn’t so bad, that there are people going through worse situations than I am and to appreciate the little things that I do have.
In the beginning of night we meet a 12 year old jewish boy named Elie. Elie lives in the town of Sighet he also lives with his parents and two older sisters, I actually find that quite ironic because I have two older sisters. He also has a cabbala teacher named moshe the beadle who is often described as awkward. Moshe is deported by the hungarians because he was a jew. After several months in captivity Moshe returns telling stories of how at the Polish border the jews were handed over to the Nazis and were forced to dig their own graves and were killed. But no one in the town believes his stories of mass killings. I can actually accept the fact that they did not believe him because what they were doing to the jews was inconceivable. Later once
Human nature can be analyzed through feelings, characteristics, and behavior. Humans are capable of expressing different emotions such as hate, frustration, remorse, happiness and other emotions depending on the situation they are encountering.Various aspects of human nature can be observed through many forms of media. Often times humans are portrayed in a negative way, however there are certain cases where they are portrayed positively, like in the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel. Evil acts, discrimination towards others, and perseverance for survival, are all apart of human nature.
but these are just the most important). Gerta is the main character of this story. She is the one who thinks of building a tunnel through the death strip into West Germany, with her father's help. Fritz is one of Gerta brothers who help dug the tunnel. Mother is gerta and fritz’s mother.
A Night Divided written by Jennifer A. Nielsen is about a twelve-year-old girl named Gerta and her quest for freedom. Gerta is living in East Germany during the construction of the Berlin wall. A few days before the installation of the barbed wire fence and the formation of the wall, members of Gerta’s family left for West Germany to search for apartments and job opportunities. They were not allowed to re-enter the Eastern Zone. Gerta and her brother Fritz are inspired by the death of their friend Peter, who tries to escape the East. They become motivated at the thought of being reunited with their family. This inspiration and motivation drives them to build a tunnel to the other side of the wall. The story is not just about the physical challenges
Fritz, about to be enlisted into the military and sent on the most dangerous missions as punishment for his father’s supposed crimes about the government, has worries of his own. Yet he always has a smile for Gerta, time to help her, and quick-witted solutions for many of her problems. With brothers like Fritz, it is easy to see why Gerta is willing to risk so much for her family. Gerta’s mother is initially a harder sell—a woman so attached to her home and so afraid of leaving that she is the “reason” half the family is stuck in East Berlin at all. However, Gerta’s actions help her mother question her own previous decisions, and by the end of the novel all the family has each other’s backs. Their support for each other provides stability in a world where it is so easy to be
In the two readings of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into the Night and Margarita Spalding Gerry’s “The Enemy”, we can compare and contrast the main characters of the women in each reading on behalf of their drug addiction. In Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into the Night, Mary Tyrone struggles with her addiction of Morphine and in Margarita Spalding Gerry’s “The Enemy”, Mrs. Campbell also struggles with morphine addiction. In both readings we can compare and contrast each of these women’s lifestyles and how they are affected by their morphine addiction.
A teacher, Mrs. Gruwell, takes things into her own hands to help these teens. She is the only teacher in the entire school who believes that these kids can change their lives around and become better people. To help the students express their feelings, she gives each kid a journal to write in everyday. After reading their stories, Mrs. Gruwell learns that every single one of those kids were fighting a battle. She tries to put things in perspective when she makes them read about the Holocaust. She takes them to the holocaust museum to learn more about Anne Frank's story and the other children and families who were kept in these concentration camps. Once these delinquent students realize what these Jews, of all ages, have been through helps them understand that other kids have had way worse lives compared to them. It makes them realize how grateful they are for what they have in life because somewhere else it could be much worse. These students all have a gang that they are in and have a mindset that they only protect their own. Throughout the school year, Mrs. Gruwell teaches them what life is about and the importance to treat everyone as if they were one of their “own”. These students now realize this and begin to break out of their comfort zone and start talking to people outside of their own friend group. In the end, the students show each other that they appreciate and respect everyone in their class no matter what background they come
