Differing Facts from Fictions: which Fictions?
Reading Abate’s first chapter on Snow White and Maria Tatar’s observation of classic fairy teles, my mind simultaneously wonders to the recent factual events occurring in both Indonesia and the United States. In 2015, an Indonesian (step) mother banged her 9 year old daughter to the wall, buried her with her favorite doll, and announced to the public that her child was missing to get the public sympathy. The nation was enraged, shocked, and were unable to explain “the crime and motivation” that “defy easy comprehension" (Szegedy - Maszak, quoted by Abate, 36). why would a mother kill a girl that she adopted and raised ever since she was little baby? What motivated her? In February 2016, a small town in Ohio was rocked with a criminal event that killed 8 family members where three innocent children escaped a brutal execution – style murders. The event, as tragic as it was, received less public condemnation to the fact that the little children were kept alive. Were the killers experienced “the huntsman – like moments” when changed his mind about killing Snow white, that they did not murder them?
According to Abate (48), “Snow white reflects the strong past presence as well as powerful current reality of child murder” committed by the ( biological or non-biological ) parents.
