2) Project summary

Ethical concerns regarding the use of embryo-derived embryonic stem cells (ES), and the immune response elicited by differentiated ES cells, are being circumvented by using induced pluripotential stem cells (iPSCs) derived from patients’ somatic cells. These can be differentiated into other cell types including pancreatic -cells for diabetics. Unfortunately aspects of iPSC DNA & regulation of differentiation impair the production of cells for transplant. Understanding the role of micro RNAs in iPSC differentiation could improve the therapeutic application of iPSCs.
