As slavery was a legal institution and a “fixed target,” once “abolished the target of racism splintered into hundreds of fragments, all of which seemed to be moving in many directions.”2 Moreover, Mississippi, being one of the rigorous states in terms of racial division, did not want to conform to the changing attitudes in the US, not even for their own president.
