Poverty has a very strong social stigma here in the United States and as such that it would be impossible not to have other cognitive bias towards the otherwise destitute. bell hooks attempts to challenge the stereotypes of poverty and the negligence the poor often face. bell hook’s piece called “Seeing and Making Culture: Representing the Poor” uses a variety of emotional anecdotes and references to demonstrate the demonizing of the poor. She uses her experiences to invoke a feeling of empathy from the reader as she relays the troubles she faced in poverty. hook’s use of her own experiences sets up a situation where she can riposte the idea that the poor are stupid, lazy, and lack the character of someone who is successful. She uses many personal stories of her own destitution to assist the reader in comprehending the situation and helping the reader realize that she has a place in the discourse. One particular representative example she used was her college experience. “When I went to college I could not afford to come home during breaks, I frequently spent my time with the black women who cleaned in the dormitories” (hooks, 432.)
