Fracking is the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into rock to force open ground and extract oil or gas. Fracking is becoming very popular due to the amount of money large companies make by doing so. However, in the article “Burning Love” by Elizabeth Kolbert, published in the New Yorker on December 5, 2011 she argues that although fracking has made individuals and businesses wealthy, it should be banned. In this essay, I will analyze Elizabeth Kolbert’s essay by identifying and detailing her purpose, goal, audience, and four rhetorical strategies used in this article. Elizabeth Kolbert’s essay was published in the New Yorker making the audience 57% democrat, with an average age from 30-49 and 50-64. Over half of the readers …show more content…
Gaining trust from your audience is very crucial when presenting an argument. When the audience trusts the facts, you’re putting on the table it helps to convince them be on your side of the argument. I believe Kolbert’s use of references to authority was a strong rhetorical strategy. She is gaining both creditability and trust with her audience in doing so. It is also a very important strategy when it comes to her argument specifically, considering the amount of fracking that is happening in the country and the amount of people unaware of the dangers it is causing. Kolbert’s next strong rhetorical strategy used was the use of a definition. The blackboard worksheet “Introduction to Rhetorical Strategy’s” says using a definition is, “when authors define certain words, these definitions are specifically formulated for the specific purpose he or she has in mind. In addition, these definitions are crafted uniquely for the intended audience” (Introduction to Rhetorical Strategies 2). Kolbert’s use of this strategy can be found in the middle of her article in paragraph 4, it reads, “Shale gas is embedded in dense rock, so drillers use a mixture of water, sand, and chemicals to open fissures in the stone through which it can escape” (Kolbert 532). She is defining the process of fracking before getting into different acts made to protect those affected by fracking. The
For the past twenty to thirty years, hydraulic fracturing, more commonly known as fracking, has been the number one source of natural gas, oil, and energy in the United States. The process of fracking is that a well is built above the ground and then a drill digs several thousand feet deep into the ground to extract the oil and natural gas that is trapped inside of rock formations. Fracking is very controversial because of the cost of the process and the environmental “threats” that it poses. From methane emissions to earthquakes, fracking has been accused to be linked with several environmental issues. To prevent any environmental dangers, states place regulations and boundaries that energy companies have to follow in order to build a well and keep it up and running. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) also works with states to help regulate these wells. More importantly, fracking in the United States is very important and acts as a bridge to the future. While it may be argued that hydraulic fracturing is not beneficial to the economy and harmful to the environment, fracking in the United States should not be banned because fracking is not only imperative to the growth of jobs and the economy, but it also does not put the surrounding environment in danger.

Does your marriage still felicity as same as your dating time with your wife? Most of people’s love is affected by children, work and stress after married. Therefore, more and more family was broken, only 30% people get happy marriage. In essay “Masters of Love” by Emily Esfahani Smith, She introduced two kinds of couples that is the masters and the disasters. The masters were still happily together after six years, but the disasters were broken up or had really bad marriages. Those people who are masters all have a same characteristic that is they understand how to use kindness to manage their marriage, so I extent Smith’s claim “Kindness makes each partner feel cared for, understood, and validated---feel loved.”
Over the past decade oil and gas producers have increasingly used hydraulic fracturing also known as fracking to extract oil and gas from the earth. Most people believe fracking is a new process but it has been around for over 100 years. Modern day fracking began in the 1990’s when George P Mitchell created a new technique by combining fracking with horizontal drilling. Since then, U.S. oil and gas production has skyrocketed. But the “new” perception of fracking leads people to incorrectly believe that fracking is temporary and that it somehow harms the environment. The truth is fracking is a reasonable energy solution if oversight and safeguards are used. In the last ten years fracking has improved conditions in the U.S. in three
In recent years, the subject of hydraulic fracturing, better known as fracking has been a constant subject of interest in the news media. The pros and cons of fracking are passionately debated. However, the public should become educated on the subject of fracking prior to choosing a side of the argument. In the scholarly article, “Super Fracking,” published in 2014, by Donald L. Trucotte, Eldridge M. Moores, and John B. Rundle, a detailed description of fracking is provided, followed by their analysis of current issues surrounding the controversy. According to Trucotte, Moores, and Rundle, fracking saves the consumer money. The wellhead cost to produce natural gas in January of 2000 was two dollars and sixty cents per one thousand cubic feet. At an alarming rate, the cost at the wellhead to produce natural gas had risen to eight dollars per one thousand cubic feet by January of 2006. Comfortingly, the wellhead cost dropped to two dollars and eighty-nine cents by the end of 2012. Impressively, gas production increase and price decrease over the time period are a result of fracking. In their article, Trucotte, Moores, and Rundle describe in great detail that hydraulic fracturing, most commonly referred to as fracking is the process of drilling down into the earth to fracture the layers of rock so that a high-pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the oil or natural gas inside. This method of fracking has been used commercially for the last fifty years.
Each film presented ways to demonstrate how fracking has affected people in their daily routine. Fracking is defined as a way for engineers to pump water into the ground to then release natural gas. After this water is created, it is known as produced water which then has a possibility to pollute surrounding areas. (McAleer, 2013) Although both FrackNation and Gasland show people in their hometowns, FrackNation by Phelim McAleer is able to create an unyielding argument by using logos.
Fracking is a complex political topic; nonetheless, fracking is showing a positive impact on the United States economy and leaving a harmful footprint behind the environment. In addition, consumers are experiencing a significant amount of savings due to the overwhelming supplies of oil; thus, the revolution in new technology is triggering an improper fracking system that contributes to airborne pollution and water contamination. Higher authorities should implement the concepts of sustainability and ethical views of large corporations and businesses to protect the consumer’s safety.
In “Fracking” authors Michael D. Holloway and Oliver Rudd cover the technology and methods of hydraulic fracturing while explaining the consequences it has on our health, agriculture, and the planet. The two set out to expose the truths and fallacies regarding impacts of the controversial topic. Throughout the book excerpt, the authors reiterate their goal of not making false claims; “the goal is to educate and share insight.” The authors work to relieve the public of common hydraulic fracking related misconceptions brought on by the media. While the majority of citizens opposed to fracking report contamination to their water source and air, the authors’ collected studies reveal that these problems are not unique to fracking; they occur whenever
The global crisis surrounding energy needs grows in severity as time goes by and in order to solve it, scientists have created the innovative solution known as hydraulic fracturing (Source 5). Hydraulic fracturing, commonly referred to as “fracking,” is a process that injects water, chemicals, sand, and other materials into layers of shale. The injected mixture cracks the layers of shale, releasing trapped natural gasses that can be collected (Source 1). Fracking occurs deep under the surface of the earth, miles below the groundwater that is accessed from drinking-water wells. In the mid-2000s, “fuel prices were rising rapidly” (Source 5). Hydraulic fracturing was a cheap solution that not only brought the world out of a state of emergency but made oil prices drop. The new method of gas collection grew the oil and gas industry, benefiting people all around the world. Fracking is a cheap, effective solution to global needs, but is under attack from skeptics who worry about environmental hazards. The claims against fracking not only have no real evidence but also risk destroying the jobs in the oil and gas industry as well as support for energy needs. Hydraulic fracturing is not only a cheap but a safe method that supports global needs surrounding both energy and jobs.
Fracking has actually changed out future as we know it, and has made it possible for many things. Fracking will make the world run on natural fossil fuels for much longer, which is also better for the environment and us. In 2015, the U.S. reached its all time high in oil production in 14 years and is only expected to continually rise. Oil production in the U.S. is one of the main sources of jobs for people living in the U.S. (Nunez, 2013). Fracking is a good way to employ U.S. citizens and is also a good way to get natural ways of oil production. As we all
[1]Fracking; that word alone is enough to cause thousands of protests thought our streets, only recently on the 2nd of September twenty anti-fracking protesters rushed into Manchester’s Magistrates Court, and started to protest against fracking disrupting some court proceedings and causing disturbance and fights with the police. [2]These protests are understandable though with the common media perception of fracking where millions of gallons of water are transported causing more carbon dioxide emissions, harmful chemicals can be leaked into our ground water and earthquakes that shock our country like the 2.2 magnitude earthquake in Blackpool, 2011. However media exaggerates the
The fracking industry in its entirety, although surrounded by a shroud of controversy, is an economic stimulator that many do not acknowledge. The potential replacement of coal for efficient and clean energy would not be possible if it weren’t for the utilization of hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, and horizontal drilling. To consider fracking as only a danger to the environment would be an overstatement while saying fracking only provides natural gas and nothing else is an understatement. It’s important to consider all of the potential benefits that fracking gives to the economy and how its minor environmental destruction could lead to an economic reconstruction. Although fracking has a negative connotation with most people,
Adam Briggle is a professor that explores the world of fracking, and he gets his first look at “Fracking” comes when he’s pushing his son on a swing set at a playground and far out; he get’s his first look at what the headquarters of fracking look like. He’s baffled by the carelessness the industry shows by putting an oil drill next to a playground. This sight would be the start of a fight between government and its citizens. His first step was to learn what “Fracking” actually meant; because it was his first time ever knowing what “Fracking” was until he moved to Denton, Texas. After this sight he leads a revolutionary group to stop the creation of a new oil drill. In the process they face
Wenonah Hauter who campaigned against the electricity free trade in the 1990’s, contends that the hurry to fracking causes a serious threat to the environment and is hazardous to the future of human health. Frackopoly shows the historical beginning of Fracking and the new advancement of technologies that made this procedure feasible. The book also explores the toxins that are exposed to the different water sources that surround these oil fields, and also “sacrifice zones” the release of dangerous solar radiation from “ deep inside shale depositions”. Frackopoly also investigates the interesting means that have supported fracking like; leading environmental groups, and examines the commercial advantage of companies. This book gives a new outlook
