In “Can the Desert Be Saved?” Mackenzie Carro explains that desert tortoises may go extinct but their is a scientist willing to help. Desert tortoises were and still are being eaten by ravens in the Mojave Desert. The reason their are so many ravens in the Mojave Desert is because of human pollution like throwing bags and other garbage ravens can use to their advantage. But tortoises don't have to worry because a scientist named Tim Shields is here to help. He is using advanced such as fake baby tortoises that spray a bad smell, lasers to distract and get rid of the ravens and more. Scientist like shields want to help the tortoises . “Technology is a powerful tool, but it’s up to us to figure out how to use it” said Tim Shields.
Long ago, the middle of the North American continent was a treeless prairie covered by tall grasses and roaming buffalo. When European settlers came, they called this area the Great American Desert. Today, this "desert" is covered with fields of wheat, corn, and alfalfa made possible by center-pivot irrigation. My grandfather used to sell center-pivot systems and when my family drove to my grandparent's home in Nebraska, we would count how many "sprinklers" were watering each section of land. At the time, I didn't know that this water was being pumped from somethng called the Ogallala Aquifer, a huge underground water supply. Throughout the years, this aquifer has made the Great American Desert one of the best farming
A theme is the meaning behind a story, occasionally defined as the moral of the story. Themes can differ from one end of the world to the other, as it does in many books. The Droughtlanders by Carrie Mac is a futuristic version of the world which has been divided into two parts. The rich and the poor, the healthy and the sick, otherwise known as Keyland and Droughtland. Keyland is where all the rich people with extravagant lands and lives live. Droughtland is a disease-ridden land where all poor people are being forced to live. Society treats Droughtland poorly and they decide to take action. Thus starting the revolution. Carrie Mac portrays many themes in different ways throughout the book. However the major theme the book revolves around is that; No matter how rich or poor a person is, or what gender, race, or sexuality they are, in the end, they are all the same and deserve to be treated equally. In addition, the book shows that when everyone is treated equally there is so much more that everyone can accomplish. The theme is being portrayed through the narrative point of view, setting and atmosphere, and character development.
In his book, Cadillac Desert: The American West and Its Disappearing Water, Marc Reisner’s main thesis is to show the inefficiency, greed, and inherent difficulty in the American West’s never-ending struggle to turn its unwelcoming desert into a lush garden. One of his main sub-points is that the West is not meant to support millions of people. It has a wide range of geographic challenges throughout the entire region. Its inconsistency and diversity is a primary cause of its water problems. For example, Reisner notes that the West consists of “plains so arid that they could barely support bunchgrass; deserts that were fiercely hot and fiercely cold; streams that flooded a few weeks each year and went dry the rest; forests with trees so large it might take days to bring one down; . . . hail followed by drought followed by hail;” (23).
“I was confident I could provide enough indirect clues for readers to understand that, to no small degree, Chris’s seemingly inexplicable behavior during the final years of his life was in fact explained by the volatile dynamics of the McCandless family while he was growing up” (Krakauer: The Wild Truth 9).
The Desert Southwest is a very interesting place for non natives. It is a very hot place it can get up to 140 degrees which is normal for the deseret but an night it's a different story it can lower to about 30 degrees that is 2 degrees lower than freezing point. That is like a huge freezer and the sand can get cold under the about 4-5 inches it is also traditional to to speak their language apachean it was mostley spoken by the natives.
A region is an area that has common features. Las Vegas is in the State of Nevada and the North America continent. Nevada can be divided into 4 land regions: the Columbia Plateau, the Sierra Nevada, The Mojave desert, and the Basin and Range region. It is situated in a mountainous region that has massive semiarid grasslands and alkali deserts. It is in the Western, Mountain West, and Southwestern districts of the U.S. The large cities located in the basins are Reno and Carson. However, Elko, Elko, Fallon, and some other cities are located there. The Mojave Desert’s region includes Vegas, Henderson, and Boulder City. Its region type is a state.
The Greys have been creating problems for your government ever since their first downed craft was discovered in the New Mexico desert in 1947. The creatures you found (for that is what you considered them) both horrified and mystified you. The authorities were immediately notified and the few civilians present were ordered to be silent. The Air Force whisked away the remains of the fallen craft and its inhabitants, one of which was still alive. A special task force was organized to examine the findings and give recommendations. The one surviving extraterrestrial was taken to a laboratory and kept under strict supervision day and night, where after some years it succumbed to an unknown illness. This was your first encounter with the Greys.

In “Can the Desert Tortoises Be Saved?”, author Mackenzie Carro informs readers that the issue of desert tortoises being going extinct is vanishing because scientists are using technology to save their species. In the Mojave Desert in California, ravens have been eating turtles almost to extinction. So scientist Tim Shield has been working on some inventions using technology to help save them. His team has come up with an idea to scare ravens away: A remote control rover. Equipped with cameras, the vehicle chases ravens away from the tortoises. The second method are realistic - looking plastic tortoise shells, which he placed among the desert. Upon the arrival of a raven, sensors inside the shell spray a could smell into the air, with a more
A recent article has been posted of a 100 year old tortoise named Diego who is responsible for saving its species. The tortoises in Galapagos were almost in near extinction and this because the very few males that are on the island did not seem an interest to the females, which slowed down the population rate. The tortoise lives in a breeding center in Santa Cruz but is from a species called Chelnoidis Hoodensis, which is a species that that is only found in Espanola. Knowing the history of this Diego and seeing how he has produced many offspring before they decided to take him to Galapagos and he has more than succeeded in helping repopulate. A tortoise specialist named Tapia say’s “He’s contributed enormously to repopulating the island” and
In the article “Can the Desert Tortoise be saved?”, Mackenzie Carlo reports that Tim Shields and his team of conservationist are using technology to help save Desert Tortoises from extinction. In the Mohave Desert, Desert Tortoises are facing extinction because many ravens are eating the tortoises. Tim shields has been researching for ways to use technology not just for saving the tortoises but also other animals. Tim has come up with Desert tortoise look alike toys and placed them around the desert. When a raven come close it will send out a bad tasting scent so when the ravens try to eat them they will taste that scent and remember that that's how desert tortoises taste. Other people around the world have also been trying to come up with
In “Can The Desert Tortoise Be Saved?”, Mackenzie Carro explains that baby tortoises are becoming endangered by ravens eating them but with technology, lots of help, and time they can eventually save the bag Desert Tortoises. Baby Desert Tortoises in the Mojave Desert are being eaten up by all the ravens that have populated the desert. Over the past 50 years people have been producing more and more garbage which also provides the ravens with food, they have also built fences and telephone wires which raven's nest on so humans are basically providing ravens with everything they need. Conservationist Tim Shields has decided to do something about it he decided his first tactic was to outsmart the ravens he made plastic fake tortoises that emitted
In undoubtedly one of the grandest science fiction epics of all time, Frank Herbert’s Dune focuses on a stunning blend of politics, environmentalism, adventure, and mysticism. Recipient of the Nebula Award and Hugo Award, Dune explores the effects of a changing global climate most prominently. The role of science fiction isn’t so much to predict the future, rather than to astound the audience with its possible leading avenues. Dune has a sparse ecosystem and Herbert explores for instance how the limitation of water would transform the planetary ecology and possible sustenance for human life. Thus Dune, stands as an early example that explores environmentalism and ecology, effectively communicating these novel ideas in the 1960’s to a new and young audience and generation. Herbert focuses on the untapped human potential of transcending the primary state of living conditions, however with a plethora of limitations and consequences. Particularly interesting, the novel as a whole serves as an allegory for the dangers of environmental shortages and damages. Although some may presume the novel Dune as confusing archaic misfit for a science fiction novel, these romantic critics are often too dogmatic in their provincial ideologies. Several warnings are presented throughout the course of the novel on ancient dangers such as the greed of mercantile corporations, the intertwined complications of religion and politics, conflicts of feudalism, and most prominently ecological fragility.
