The persuasion analyzed in Cicero’s oration can be seen across many contemporary artifacts, but Blackfish is an artifact where persuasion is working at its best. Blackfish is a documentary that was released in 2013 by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. This documentary tells the story of killer whales in captivity, with a large portion of the story surrounding Tilikum. Tilikum is an orca who has severely hurt or killed several trainers while in captivity. The documentary’s website states that the film aims to, “challenge us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow animals”. Blackfish works to expose the multi billion-dollar sea park industry by hitting at people’s emotions to persuade. With a mix of interviews and archived footage, Blackfish is able to unveil the truth behind these sea parks and how it is morally wrong to keep these beloved sea creatures in captivity. The concept of persuasion was previously explored in the analysis of Cicero’s Catilinarian oration, but can be thoroughly applied to Blackfish. Persuasion is the act of convincing someone to believe a certain set of beliefs or ideas, which is done so using good will, logic, and emotions. Persuasion is evident throughout the documentary, with an emphasis on the use ethos and pathos. Ethos, a rhetorical appeal coined by Aristotle, is concerned with the good will of the speaker. This appeal assesses the speaker’s
Blackfish does a great job at using all three rhetorical appeals in defending their argument for the abolishment of orca captivity. First, ethos is widely used throughout the documentary. Almost every speaker in the documentary had a first hand experience with Tilikum or other captive orcas, giving the document major credibility. Actual SeaWorld trainers who worked the shows gave their personal first hand stories in working with the orcas. They themselves explained how they saw Tilikum’s behavior and health deteriorate. Former amusement park managers who were either worked with Tilikum or dealt with the business in capturing and trading orcas also gave their first hand accounts of what had happened with Tilikum and other orcas. An OSHA expert witness was also included in the documentary speaking about the horrible conditions that SeaWorld had put the orcas in. All of these experts in their respective field talking about the dangers of orcas in captivity is a great use of ethos in Blackfish’s argument against orca captivity.
A documentary is an expository text that informs its audience about an issue person or event using visual and auditory conventions to convey a message. Documentaries are often used to reveal an unusual, interesting or unknown angle. Topics are limited only by one's imagination. The documentary Blackfish is the story of Tilikum, a captive killer whale that has taken the lives of several people, it underscores problems within the sea-park industry, man's relationship to nature, and how little has been learned about these highly intelligent mammals. This documentary was directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. The ideas that orcas are wild and unpredictable, Seaworld’s treatment of orcas are inhumane and Seaworld’s was negligent in their training of their trainers. These ideas are shown throughout the documentary as visual techniques of Celebrity figure, expert opinion, audio codes, the documentary technique of interviews, archival footage and written codes. I think these ideas in the documentary are quite true and are well proven throughout the documentary.
In 2013 Gabriela Cowperthwaite produced and directed the documentary “Blackfish”. This documentary mainly focused on the issues behind killer whales being held in captivity such as at the famous amusement park Sea World, instead of the open ocean. Some negative outcomes of these animals being confined to such small spaces is, many accounts have been documented of the whales being agitated and having an aggressive tone with other whales and the trainers as well that work with them. A handful of these are human deaths caused by the orca whales. Throughout the documentary the director uses the Rhetorical strategies ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade the audience and try to convince them that her argument has a valid point and can be
Black; a colour closely associated with dread, a cascade of bubbles emerging, and a voice filled with sorrow reveals the events that lead to the death of a human being are present when suddenly a killer whale and person come into shot. This is what the audience first sees with the documentary Blackfish, what they do not see, however, is all of the manipulative fallacies. At first glance Blackfish looks like a strong and valid argument, however, under further examination it becomes evident that Blackfish’s argument is not as strong as it first appears to be. While Blackfish has some solid evidence, the use of fallacies in the argument makes it manipulative, and therefore invalid.
Finally, I will give reason to why people need to realize the damage SeaWorld is doing to the
Black Fish uses the death of a recognized Killer Whale trainer at SeaWorld, Dawn Brancheau who was one of Tilikums trainers thorough his twenty years in captivity, almost as a framing device to explore the theory that possessing Orcas in captivity is corrupt and unnatural for the whales. In Black fish, there are many different tragedies that went on while the Orcas were in captivity. Fisher men separated the young from the mothers and took them into SeaWorld. Many of the workers were unaware of all of the immoral actions they were taking part in. Tilikum was the Killer Whale that ended up killing Dawn Brancheau and causing a stir in SeaWorld. Having Orcas in captivity damages them but, the trainers were scared to leave because they want to continue to care for the whales. There is a relationship shared with the trainers and the whales yet it is obvious that very little was taught in the SeaWorld industry about these intelligent mammals.
Ideas that are powerful effectively influence and evoke cognition of the audience, hence composers aim to present powerful ideas in their documentary. Blackfish is a documentary which concerns the captivity of Tilikum, an orca held by SeaWorld involved in the deaths of three individuals, and the consequences of keeping orcas in captivity. In the documentary "Blackfish" composed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the idea of animal cruelty is explored. Through various documentary and cinematic techniques and emotional appeals, Blackfish exemplifies their argument and engages its audience in the discussion of the Marine Park industry and the effect of animal conservation.
David Kirby’s book describes the complex issues of whales in captivity. The death of a SeaWorld trainer brought up many objective reasons of the training practices of this business were not effective at keeping trainers safe in the water. Currently this debate is still being tested in a court of law. OSHA claims that even with the precautions that SeaWorld tries to use, it still cannot guarantee the safety of trainers in the water. This cultural topic has been gaining ground, and recently prompted a movie based off this book titled, Blackfish. The audience of this book includes animal activists, followers of David Kirby, and people that are interested in the topic of killer whales in captivity. Rob Grom was contracted to create a book
The qualities that make humans different from other species are collectively called human nature. Part of human nature is how individuals see themselves and others. Shakespeare uses human nature in many of his plays, including Julius Caesar, which has many examples of persuasion. He shows that how humans perceive themselves allows them to be persuaded or persuasive. The way Brutus feels about himself, and how he acts, is what allows Cassius, and later Brutus himself, to convince him to assassinate Caesar. Later, after the death of Caesar, both Brutus and Antony try to convince the crowd of Romans to join them, using different forms of rhetoric. There are many other smaller instances of persuasion, most of which include Caesar, Brutus, or Antony.
Blackfish, a documentary by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, analyzes the horrific treatment, containment, and use of Orca whales within entertainment facilities. The discussion of treatment began in 2010, when Dawn Brancheau was killed and drowned by the whale, Tilikum. Since this incident, there have been multiple investigations into SeaWorld and similar facilities. It is argued that the whales should be released from these facilities due to the posed dangers they have to humans, and themselves.
With CGI visual effects we perceive strategy planned for the capture of Tilikum and the affairs that occurred in the court room. We also examine slow-motion footage that apexes the viciousness of the brutal attacks that took place as well as, camera close-ups occupying vivid emotions of horrified eye-witnesses. It is obvious that Blackfish was and is a well thought-out documentary that illustrates the tragic truth about whale captivity. Aggravation being the one way for these poor orcas to release their frustration which lead to deaths that could have been prevented and causing an uprising of momentum, fighting for
The power of persuasion is important because when someone’s persuaded to do something that gives them clarity to go ahead and attempt that action that someone’s instilled in their mind to try. Throughout Julius Caesar the power of persuasion was important because the conspirators help to overthrow Caesar. There are many reasons for why the conspirators helped to overthrow. They thought that he was too prideful, too ambitious and to arrogant.
The movie blackfish is narrated by former sea world trainers. This gives the movie more credibility(Ethos) because the audience can move easily trust the former trainers point of view to be true. They are speaking of their own experience. They also use actual events for the documentary movie. There was eyewitness to separations the mother wheals to her children. Moreover, blackfish documentary directed by Gabriella Cowper Waite. She has many years’ experience in the field of documentary filming, so it allows the audience to feel they are viewing a credible piece of work. Additionally, blackfish was also funded by CNN. It is a company that many audiences would find trustworthy due to their authority and reliability when it comes
Persuasive is one of the most manipulative devices used in history and modern time. In the play “The Tragedy of Julius Caesar” by William Shakespeare, there are several characters that influenced the play. Julius Caesar was one of the most influential people in history and made Rome one of the wealthiest cities. The conspirators such as Brutus killed Caesar but they all had their own reasons. Some had reasonable reasons meanwhile others were for their own benefits. At the end of the scene, Mark Antony promised to avenge Caesar's death. One of the most influential characters is Mark Antony, the right hand of Julius Caesar. The significant scene is Mark Antony’s funeral speech. His speech changes the perspectives of how the people of Rome, seen the conspirators. In his speech, we can see that he uses specific evidence, verbal irony, appeals to self-interest, props, and suspense. He uses these persuasive devices to turn the mob against the conspirators.
“The pen is mightier than the sword.” As a youth, I disagreed with this statement. How could a pen ever defeat a sword? Over time, I have come to understand how words and speech can influence generations more than just fear or force. Cicero’s speeches are prime examples of how rhetoric is more powerful than military prowess or use of arms. His rhetoric influenced public policy and successive generations. Unlike Caesar and Pompey, he had no significant military command yet; his reputation was just as strong. Cicero’s general objectives in the First Catilinarian Oration were to portray Catiline as a traitor, achieve support for an action against Catiline, and protect himself from any repercussions. To demonstrate this rhetoric I will analyze sections 3 and 4 from his First Catilinarian Oration. I have choses these sections because they best show how Cicero uses rhetoric to achieve his objective. In order to classify and understand Cicero’s rhetoric, first I will define the kinds of speech and parts of rhetoric. Second, I will analyze his rhetoric by commenting on his chosen rhetorical techniques and topics.
