1. EXTERNAL ANALYSIS
1.1 Industry
David Jones Limited is a foreign-owned public company. It is owned by South African Woolworths Holding Limited. The company operates department store in Australia. There are 39 department stores existing across all states and territories in Australia. David Jones department store has a wide range of product to select, from ladies fashion, shoes and accessories, menswear, children’s wear, cosmetics, home decors, school supplies, office supply and many more. The company also offers financial services in alliance with American Express. Furthermore, the company also offers other products and services that include insurance cards, gift cards, online shopping, gift registry, hampers, flowers, food hall, The Rose Clinic health screening and interior decorating, (IBIS World, 2013)
Goods are normally sold through separate in store departments. Department store purchase products from wholesalers and manufacturers and sell them to consumers, generally without changing the products. They also undertake activities like customer service, product merchandising, advertising, inventory control and cash handling.
Each might take a ‘different path’ to achieving this goal, but this should be the common agenda. Partnership could be enhanced by ensuring the service user was placed at the centre of everything, and that a proactive, ‘whole person’ approach was taken to care.
David Jones’ position in the retail industry and the availability of numerous suppliers in the market reduces the threat of forward integration. Suppliers also want to be associated with David Jones due to its strong brand position in Australia. In 2008, 50 new iconic brands were introduced to David Jones portfolio (Annual report, 2008), which reflects the willingness of suppliers to add their products in David Jones’ product offerings.
In response to the poor performance, David Jones unveiled its Future Strategic Direction Plan on 21 March 2012 (2012b), which aimed to address the company’s challenges through a “three point strategy” (2012a, p. 9). With an implementation process expected to prolong over time, the plan set out to transform the company into a leading omni-channel retailer whilst simultaneously growing the in-store network and strengthening the core business (2012a). Through their Future Strategic Direction presentation (2012a), David Jones has highlighted the following attributes as the company’s strengths:
Nordstrom’s is classified as one of the biggest U.S. department stores. Along with Sears, Macy’s, and JC Penny’s, Nordstrom manages each department in their stores as an individual buying center. Every group functions separately from one another, and is administered by a buyer who is in charge of all varieties and styles of merchandise sold. Promotions that can be used in the stores are included, as well. “The company has also benefited from a new computerized inventory system that gives buyers and salespeople the necessary data to make smarter decisions about what is needed in the stores—and what isn’t.” (Lamb, Hair, McDaniel 569). This new and improved system allows the department store to market a greater amount of full priced items, which ultimately increase sales. The buyer is also able to easily determine what items to obtain and exhibit in the store by using this system.
Columnist Kouzes and Posner stated, “As counterintuitive as it might seem, then, the best way to lead people into the future is to connect with them deeply in the present” (Kouzes and Posner, 2009, To Lead, Create a Shared Vision, para 7). A written vision statement is not valuable if the words lack vehemence. Shared vision implies that each member of the team or business is active and inventive. Actions become applicable when goals and objectives are clearly identified. Present activity will set the path for where the business is headed. The term shared means individuals are united.
David Jones isn’t just Australia’s oldest department store, but also the oldest department store in the world with the history of 177 years.

There are several different types of stores within the discount retail industry, and for comparison's sake, the industry is further broken into many segments. DG is in the market segment known as the dollar store category. As a result, competitors such as Wal-Mart are in the same industry but not the same peer group. Comparisons will be made throughout this report to Wal-Mart and other big firms because they tend draw some of the same customers.
