Divergent is a dystopian novel that takes place in a futuristic Chicago. The setting also looks like a perfect Utopia, but as you go on reading you find out that it has a lot of problems. The five factions are Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. The Abnegation faction values selflessness, the Amity peace, the Candor honesty, the Dauntless bravery, and the Erudite intelligence. Throughout the novel the main character is Tris which was born in Abnegation and chose to go to the Dauntless faction. Chicago in the novel is governed by a group of people from
One night, a very dark night, trouble was lurking in the shadows. You could just smell it in the air everywhere you go. It was like choking on a dark cloud filled with danger. Certain films evoke an emotion in you. Whether it being happy, sad, scared or even angry – movies have a way of teaching us new things about ourselves and even the world. I, myself, often find myself trying to piece together what types of roles individuals play within society, regardless of if it is a film or real life. We all have these roles and functions that determine how we will act, what we will do, how we will react, and who we will interact with. These are all things that we want to know about someone, not only out of curiosity but so we can predict how others that do the same will also react. The movie, Divergent, which is based on the three-novel series by Veronica Roth is one that showed me how society functions from a
I look to the right of my bed and it’s there; crouching beside me. Its face is pure white and doesn’t resemble skin at all, but a shining porcelain. The monster doesn’t have a mouth - there is just skin running down from the bottom of its nose to its chin. Shielding it’s beady eyes are a pair of raven-black goggles strapped to its bald head. It wears what resembles a completely circular helmet the colour of a neon orange and its hands are covered in tactical gloves, dark as a jet-black night. It wears an amber jumpsuit and stare into my soul. Its wretched face is about five centimetres away from mine and I can feel an ice cold breath creep onto my forehead. The creatures body is hunched over and strange
Roth’s, Divergent has elements of a dystopian setting, and it is a possible warning for our society. Though the novel primary reveals to be dystopian, there were originally good intentions of a utopian society. Harmon describes a utopian society as, “a perfect political state that is an imaginary ideal world,” (Harmon 492). No society is created to become the epitome of destruction. The Abnegation government created the factions to act as each working part of a successful society. They must have had a utopian mindset before the society shifted by elements that led to dystopia. Harmon also examines a dystopian society as a, “bad place.” He continues by describing, “Imaginary worlds, usually in the future, in which present tendencies are carried out
Lord of the Flies and Divergent have many different similarities, but the first one may be the most significant. The first similarity between the two stories is when the characters are pushed to the very edge. One example in Lord of the Flies is when Jack and Piggy fight and Ralph takes up for Piggy. Jack then realizes Ralph is not playing and backs off of Piggy for now. This shows that Jack is pushed to the edge because he is picked on by the other boys for letting Ralph get in his face.
The hero’s journey model, (also known as the monomyth), is a pattern of events and characters that appears in most movies, books, tv shows, etc. In this pattern, the hero leaves her/his mundane world, plunges into the unknown, undergoes test and trials, and returns with new knowledge and power. In the movie Citizen Kane, a rich man and a reporter covering the story after his death learns the power and problems with money and greediness. The movie starts with him being given away from his mother, the only truly happy place he would know. A very rich banker “adopts” him, as he has stakes in a mine that was thought to be worthless but turned out to be priceless. His threshold guardians are his conscience, and make him want to return to the
The movie Divergent is based off the acclaimed novel by Veronica Roth which has sold millions of copies world-wide. It is mainly a coming of age story in a dystopian society that is beginning to undergo a revolution. The lead heroine, Tris, must suffer many tragedies before realizing who she is told to be and who she really is. Many films in this genre have common thematic elements such as tragedy, conformity, and betrayal. Divergent is a story of coming of age, because Tris undertakes a transformation caused by a revolution in a society that was built to protect against such a revolt.

Dystopian society is a way that this author shows what the future will be like when one person takes charge of a small large group. The elements of dystopian society in Divergent by Veronica Roth are limitations, corporate control, and the factions. The limitations presented in this story include the walls in which the city of Chicago is surrounded by; no one is allowed outside the fence. Another limitation is the factions, which are groups that you are put into based on your personality. You are given a test and one chance to choose a new faction that best fits your wants and needs and if you fail to choose or succeed in a faction, you become factionless. Factionless means that you don’t belong anywhere are are viewed publicly as a disgrace. The last element addressed in this story is corporate control.
Divergent is a movie (and book), that takes place in a dystopian future. The society that these people live in are divided into five factions: Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the kind), and Erudite (the intelligent). The main character, Beatrice Prior, is from Abnegation. Once an individual reaches adulthood, they have to take an aptitude test which helps them determine which faction they truly are. Once the test reveals their true faction, they get the option to stay with their current faction, or leave and join a new faction. Once they choose their faction at the Choosing Ceremony, they must commit to that faction for life. Beatrice has
“The floor drops off at a sharp angle, and several stories below us is a river. Gushing water strikes the wall beneath me and sprays upward. To my left, the water is calmer, but to my right, it is white, battling with rock” (Roth 64-65). In the book Divergent, there are five factions and when children turn 16 they must choose which faction they want to belong. Each faction is known for a different thing. Beatrice, the main character chooses Dauntless, fearless, over abnegation, putting others before themselves. Tris transforms into Dauntless lifestyle and then the government crumbles. Veronica Roth author of Divergent, uses images of water to demonstrate various levels of control from complete control through total lack of it. There are three

I come from a very large Mexican family where there is a lot of meat, cheeses, fried food, butter and of course always a lot of sweets. Due to this diet there are many health related concerns in my family, three being diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, although high cholesterol seems to be more of a genetic issue rather than a food related one. Even so, the diet we maintain does not help lower it. Due to this diet and genetics, I have very high cholesterol myself; my doctor even shocked me by saying that I could have a heart attack by the time I’m 25. This obviously scared me and I knew then that there needed to be a change in my diet.
In life, each person, book, movie, and much more contains a worldview or outlook on life as a whole. Lao Tzu states that a worldview is, “When people see some things as beautiful, other things become ugly. When people see some things as good, other things become bad.” Despite the fact that most people, movies, books, and other components in life do not realize that they have a worldview, in reality, they actually do. One specific example of an element in society that contains a worldview, is the action-filled and world-renowned book entitled Divergent. This specific element contains a striking plotline, worldview, and purpose in order to catch the attention of people around the world.
