Throughout life people find themselves in tough situations. Situations that change them. In Don Aker’s novel The First Stone, we are taken through Chad Kennedy also known as Reef’s journey of how he went from being a young offender that couldn’t have cared much about others to becoming a person who shows kindness to others. We are shown that by being around certain individuals people are able to change, people are also able to change from doing certain actions, and people can change from learning from their mistakes. People can change the way they are as demonstrated by taking advantage of opportunities provided to them resulting in the ability to make better choices.
The people that individuals spend time with can change the way they behave as they can have them think differently or feel different emotions. This is shown in the novel when Reef is spending time at the rehab centre and interacting with the people there. He treats them very differently compared to the people at the northern hills especially Leeza. “He hadn’t been able to get Leeza out of his head, had lain awake half the night thinking about her.” pg 220. Reef is clearly shown to have a change in thoughts since before he always this “tough guy” but now it shows that he is now starting to care for others and that benefits him since it allows him to make better choices when it comes to the people are that close to him. Leeza is also shown to have changed because of Reef.“Okay, who stole my roomie and replaced
In the book Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen, the theme is healing. The main character Cole was sent away to an Island for a year to change his behavior and life ways. But a few weeks into the task assigned by the Circle of Justice he fails. As Cole returns home he is sad that he would end up going to jail but he believed it was okay if he ended up going. But while on the island he learned how to control his anger, learned life lessons, and most of all he had a new perspective on life. Fortunately for Cole, he had learned how to control his anger but also he learned many important life lessons.“People change two ways- with slow persistent pressure, or with one single traumatic experience. That’s why some people change so much when they
The book Who Moved My Cheese is about change and how it can affect how you are in life. Some people take changes hard while others just go with the flow. Some are ready for a change when the time comes and others want things to never change.
Scott Monk’s “Raw” demonstrates this notion through the protagonist Brett, who undergoes a journey to being a better citizen and he if faced by obstacles that test him, define him and later on reveal whether he has changed or not. Our actions and interactions with others create certain stigmas that may not change despite progression and change the individual has undergone. Scott Monk uses a number of different illustrations to portray this idea. Despite the fact that Brett had become a more sociable, friendly and responsible person Mr. Douglas Caitlin’s father
People change and grow through their experiences and conflicts. For example, just 2 years ago I was a sixth grader. There was a lot more homework than I ever had in my non-accelerated / magnet elementary school. I had to work harder and for longer hours, but as a result, I was much more mature and knowledgeable. I improved my work habits and increased my concentration. In Judith Ortiz Cofer’s “First Love”, a 14 year old girl is in love with a high school senior. She does everything she can to try to see him more often. At the end, she thinks she learns the true meaning of love. In Richard Wright’s “The Street”, a boy has to go shopping for food, but he is constantly stopped by a gang who beats him up. At the end, he beats up the gang with a stick his mother gave him because he had to to return home. In both “The Street” by Richard Wright and “First Love” by Judith Ortiz Cofer, the characters start out as shy and naive, but end up as aware and wiser as a result of their respective conflicts.
Tough times that a person endured could show them a new path of change. People will be able to become who they really are by realizing things that they never knew in problematic circumstances. Bilbo went through his troublesome experience when Gandalf said “If I say he is a Burglar, a Burglar he is, or will be when the time comes.”(19) because at the time, he is still just a regular hobbit. He is persuaded to become a burglar, and going on the journey makes him realize he has a love for travel and adventure. Many other difficult situations have been mentioned in the story, and in most of them, when people help others, they become someone of new. People can become a hero like Bard, the person who killed Smaug and is given the title of “King Bard”(233), or Bilbo, the hobbit who saved everyone and discovered his real passion in life. All of this change is not always going to be about a character change, but times like these, can have a revelation of something dark. Thorin, the leader of the Dwarves - a brave, proud, and strong warrior - has revealed his dark side when they finally recovered the Arkenstone. People went to the castle to ask for some
The Changeable nature of life affects us all somehow. Whether it be moving to a new city, having children, or losing people that we love, it can affect people in many different ways. For example, in the novel, the main character
One of the first themes that I discovered is that some people never change. Whether you are young, middle-aged, or old, some
Change is good. Santiago doesn’t realize this message applies everywhere. As he walks an unfamiliar path to find an unidentified treasure, he doesn’t recognize the fact that many changes are occurring throughout him. He put a lot into faith during his journey as he went from a man of routine and order, to becoming a man of new experiences all because of a dream. This is only one example of a change he went through. There are many more that he underwent, each with a different story.
What would life be like if people didn't undergo change? Many opportunities happen in life because of adjustments people make for themselves. In the short stories "Mirror Image" by Lena Coakley and "Saturday Climbing" by W.D. Valgardson the protagonists Alice and Barry both have struggles with the major changes happening in their life. Throughout their stories, they become less pessimistic, they adress their problems and they gain a newfound confidence and trust in others. Change can be extremely difficult, but its a necessary step towards a positive life.
Some people go through this with a negative outcome but with time it can turn into a positive outcome. Melba Patella Bells in ‘’Warriors Don’t Cry’’, Feng FU in ‘’Father of Cines Aviation’’, and Jackie Robinson in ‘’I Never Had It Made’’ all faced turning points that not only changed their lives for the better, but also their country.
Maya Angelou once said, “I can be changed by what happens to me, but I refuse to be reduced by it.” This quote encompasses the idea that change is inevitable. A person is involved in numerous relationships during their lifetime and what happens within them can change who they become in the future. Within the novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford, the relationships that Henry Lee has developed throughout his lifetime have shaped him into the person he is today.
In the novel The Glass Castle, Jeanette Walls suggest that how we react to difficult circumstances shape the people who we become in the future because they force us to either rise against our circumstances or succumb to them. The narrator in this novel have experienced changes that fit the criteria to this question. In the novel The Glass Castle by Jeannette Wall, Jeannette grows up in severe poverty where she has to depend on herself. She faces unfortunate circumstances, including first degree burns and hunger but somehow maintains a positive outlook on life.
Many people face trials and tribulations day to day that mold them into the individuals they are destined to be. These could be positive or negative trials and tribulations, but either way, experiences ultimately are the major key to people’s growth and perception of the world around them. These experiences may be brought on by external factors such as who people surround themselves with (i.e. friends and relationships), neighborhoods and what is considered the “norm” for said neighborhood (i.e. gun violence, gang involvements, drugs, etc.), influences from parents or other caregivers and the amount of time they devote to the growing child. Many people are granted the same opportunity as others, but they let these extrinsic factors sway them from their destinations and wind up in situations based on how they handled previous situations. This idea is true in the novel The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates written by Wes Moore. In this novel, Wes Moore gives the detailing truth about how people are affected negatively by their decisions everyday, but also how positive influences such as role models and caring families have a positive effect on the development and destination of a child. The paths that both the Wes Moores took in life could have easily converged and been taken on by the other. No matter one’s predetermined outcome in life, his or her life can still be drastically shifted due to external influences and resources, much
Adversities are hard to avoid in one’s life; everyone has to face them at one point in their life. The effect it has on a person’s life can change their perspective towards the world. When problems arise individuals traditionally become stunned to such difficult situations that they face. The adversity becomes a brick wall that is challenging to break down. An individual's true character in addition to their nature is revealed when they face a conflict in their life or a challenge. The people who conquer the challenges that life throws at them, they are the only one’s worthy enough of being called a warrior. In the novel, The Chrysalids by John Wyndham has his protagonist David go through some conflicts which he overcomes throughout the story.
“What you are afraid to do is a clear indication of the next thing you need to do.” (-Ralph Waldo Emerson). My parent´s divorce has shaped and influenced my whole life, with a lot of side effects. I fell into a state of depression. I learned not to dwell on the bad things in life. I found a person within myself that I could live with for a while, a kid that I could be proud of, someone I wouldn’t hate. Over the years, I’ve changed, little changes, big changes, it’s all happened, and I am who I am today because of it. Not all crummy circumstances stay awful, even though it may feel like it. I can’t tell if I’ve changed for the better or the worse, but everything starts with something, one thing. My parent´s divorce shaped me into who I am today, whether the changes were good or bad, little or big, this has changed me.
