In "Blundering Into the Future: Hype or Hope," Jane Healy states that when it comes to learning, kids should not be allowed to rely on electronic devices. She believes that the electronic devices are quick fixes for a big problem. Healy acknowledges that politicians are trying to better the education of children, but she questions the main reason they're trying to upgrade into the system of electronics. She argues that even though politicians say that connecting to the internet will allow kids to engage and read more often, they contradict their statement by budget cutting libraries in the schools. Healy claims that electronic devices distracts children. Instead of the kids studying on their devices, they're going to be playing video games …show more content…
In "In the Praise of Boredom," Ellen Ruppel Shell talks about how kids can gain creativity by playing outside. Shell argues that boredom is not necessarily bad, because kids are then required to think for themselves. I believe that if a child is bored, they would find a solution to their problem. The boredom would trigger the mind to work to find ways to become busy. It would also allow them to become independent, because no-one or nothing else will be thinking for them. However, if a kid had an electronic device in front of them-while they were bored-they would instantly grab the device and just press on an application to keep them …show more content…
This could negatively affect the children, because this would make it harder for parents to teach their kids manners and/or talk to them about the process of growing up. In "What Adolescents Miss Growing Up in Cyberspace," Brent Staples argues that children that have easy access to internet connection have a difficult time maturing. He points out that people who often use electronic devices have a hard time socializing in person: "teenagers nowadays are both more connected to the world at large than ever, and more cut off from the social encounters that have historically prepared young people for-the move-into adulthood." Having internet connection allows children to gain information they do not need to know (such as sex, drugs, prison, family problems, and etc.) So when their parents try to educate their children about the process of growing up, the child feels like they know everything their parent is going to say because they have already gained some information about the subject on social
“In Praise of Boredom” by Ellen Ruppel Shell shows that nowadays parents are putting too much pressure on their children, and they aren’t letting them be a kid and have free time. Children are missing out on having fun during free time and having an imagination. When children aren’t forced to be in activities, they become creative in their free time. Children develop imaginations when they are by themselves and not forced to do activities with other children.
Is social media ruining children’s lives? Without the internet, I would be healthier and more active. I can’t imagine life without the internet however if we didn’t have the internet we would be outside more and we wouldn’t even think about phones because they wouldn’t be as fun as they are now. I would be upset if I got my phone taken away for a year, but that would force me to be more active. I would go outside more and be more adventurous. I would be healthier and happier and the world would be more social, face to face.
Carr’s premise is that the Web is interfering with our ability to focus on lengthy material. On the contrary, the internet is actually aiding our ability to focus on reading. This holds true for younger children, who are known as the digital natives in our generation. In a research conducted by The National Center for Education shows that “by altering the mode of reading material from traditional paper-based reading to online reading,” the interest of elementary school children increased (Wright 367). Because children of the 21st century are surrounded by technology, they are more likely to gear towards digital media for their mode of learning. Contrary to Carr’s view that the internet “is chipping away [the] capacity for concentration and contemplation,” these children are more likely to read and focus as a result of
The directors of the “Life and Death at the Bored” is ABC News and is broadcasted on the show 20/20 and this show is known for their interviews and stories that are told by these investigations that go on for years finding evidence and this documentary is based on a life and death situations that happen at the bored everyday. The directors of this documentary took almost 5 years or even more to gather so much information. However, there may be more to the story than what they shared because it is still an ongoing investigation. There will be people who feel sympathy or be careless about situations like this because they think that the 16 year-old boy deserved it because he was going to cross the border with drugs. The Life and Death at the
My cousin's wife Irina Olaru has a positive attitude about the internet use of their children, a girl of four years, and a boy of two and half years. Irina graduated Bethel University, in Minnesota, four years ago. She said to me that their children use a laptop and cellphones every day. Asking her how much time daily their children spend in front of a laptop or cell phone, she said more than two hours every day, which confirms above statistical data. Asking her what attitude they have, as parents about the computer use of their children at such young age, she explained that the internet gives many opportunities of learning and developing for their children. They do not want to ban computer use because they need a time when their children
Some researchers argue that the amount of time we spend on the internet has disenabled us from being able to the “deep mental connections that form when we read deeply….” (Carr 575). Some other personal anecdotes suggest that technology has lessened our ability to focus. For example, Carr includes the story of Bruce Friedman who confesses that he has “almost completely lost the ability to read and absorb a longish article” whether on the web or in print (Carr 574). If such hypotheses are true, than removing, or at least limiting, technology in the classroom might be beneficial to cadets, so that there can be an environment where we can learn without a world of
What evidence exists that supports the idea that the internet has positive effects on the social development of adolescents? The existing evidence that supports the idea that the internet has positive effects on the social development of adolescents are the studies conducted by Tidwell & Walthers in 2002 and Valkenburg & Peters in 2007. These and various other studies showed that adolescents are more likely to self-disclose (tell more intimate details) about themselves online than in person. Because social cues, such as eye contact, have been taken away, adolescents are more relaxed and at peace with divulging more about themselves. Adolescents are able to connect
In the article, “One-to-One Computing Has Failed Our expectations” the authors, Norris and Soloway, address the developing One-to-One program as failing. They used this as a warning to different school corporations that have not adopted this new way of learning to wait for all of the issues to be worked out. Parents become an audience member when the authors talk about the students asking "Do I need to bring my laptop to class today?" (Norris). Legal guardians and staff would question why new electronic devices were such important purchase if they would seldom be used. The concluding paragraph speaks to the classroom instructors and school corporations when the authors say, “we need to redefine the curriculum in terms of what gets taught, and we need to redefine how it gets taught”(Norris). With the use of the word “we” the writers try to unite the audience and say that the whole education system needs to work together to change to successfully integrate more technology into the education system. In Nigel Green's article, “Pros and Cons of Individualized Instruction”, he addresses teachers as his audience. Green disputes common inquiries teachers have proposed in a “Con” paragraph. Reassuring teachers, Green says that they will not be replaced, only modified in a way they help children learn different lessons. Parents of a wide range of academically skilled students were targeted when the author talks about students not being left behind nor being held back from their potential capabilities. Green makes a point about students self-confidence level being higher with this new program. This persuades parents who want the best future for their child to support this article. “Five Positive Effects of Technology on Education" by William McCoy discusses the need for technology in the classroom and he persuades his audience, parents of students, how much
Roughly ninety-two percent of teenagers are online daily, but has the internet hurt or improved their lives? The internet has made certain tasks easier like looking up information to prove somebody wrong. Although, it has many negative effects on teens. The internet is accompanied by cyber-bullying, online predators, and other types of violences. In this case, the cons very much outweigh the pros.
The Internet Age has become a time in which computer technology has not been envisioned as a luxury, but rather a necessity in many parts of daily living. And as the positive impacts of technology use in the workplace, and education setting, becomes a reality then so does the negative consequences. However, the ability to deal with the negative consequences may be more difficult to deal with for adolescents and young adults who heavily use technology for social media, text messaging, and web surfing. As these impressionable sectors of society learn to navigate their place in the world with the aid of technology, they are experiencing an inordinate amount of
Using electronic communication comes along with many effects. One of the big effects it causes is kids become less social and they keep to themselves. The more media means the less happy they become and the more likely they are to get in trouble. Using media does more harm to yourself than anybody. Antisocial behaviors build up and people become more self-centered. “It is like they don’t want to talk to people” (Gormly 2). It shows that they are lazy, rude, and impersonal. Not wanting to talk to others ruins family relationships and social lives. Many say “it feels like their lives are continually
With the development of internet, people are able to meet new friends who have the same interest or hobby through the internet. Although, it is easy to make friends on internet, people do not know whether the person they are talking to is good or bad. Some people will also spend most of their time on internet which leads them to less interaction with friends and family. Parents should concern more about their children while they are meeting new friends on internet. Although the internet allows people to stay in touch with distant family and friends, I think the negative effects
Children nowadays are always on the internet, for entertainment purpose and even educational ones. The internet has become a necessity in today way of life. In today’s modern world even schools use the internet to educate students and keep them connected. Elementary schools use the advantage of the internet to help kids read more via specific websites and they even use Apps to have teachers and parents communicate about how the child is doing. Surely the internet isn’t all that bad, but is it helping kids become more educated and helping them develop their social skills through their interactions on the internet. Some say that kids who play games on the internet are learning how to
The amount of time a teen spends on the computer can affect how well they socialize with people in the real world. Teens have a hard time interacting with one another in person because what someone will say online could be something they would in no way say in person. This can cause an individual to become extremely timid in person because they sit on the computer knowing they have the ability to state whatever they want.
The amount of time a child spends on the computer can affect how well they socialize with people in the real world. Children and teens sometimes interact with one another in person by reiterating what they would say to someone on the Internet. One can become very lazy and unwilling to do anything physical but sit on the computer because they do not have to leave their house to talk to or see people anymore.
