Elmer Beier, Shirley May McKenzie’s former husband, said that Shirley occasionally visited her brothers and that two of her brothers, Ralph and Donald, had a difficult time coping with the loss and resentment. Shirley often worried about Ralph and Donald’s self-deprecating attitudes. Elmer recalled that Lawrence and Ralph often intensely denied and sporadically admitted their Indigenous heritage.
