In “Self-Reliance,” Emerson discusses the importance of fostering individualism and trusting our own thoughts, ideas, and actions. Emerson believes that in order for us to stay true to ourselves, we must be self-reliant. He opens his essay with the assertion, “To believe in your own thought, to believe what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men-that is genius” (69). I can relate this quotation to my own personal genius, which is waiting until marriage to have sex. I am a self-reliant individual because I have practiced individualism by staying true to my inner genius, without being compromised by the influences and values of others. Mill is stressing the importance of the diversity of opinions and how silencing opinions is wrong even when the belief opposes religious doctrines. He argues that freedom of expression is important and that opinions need to be discussed because the oppressed opinion may be true and because human beings should not keep others from their own convictions. Applying this context to “Self-Reliance,” Emerson believes we should reject conformity even if it means we are stigmatized or misunderstood by others. Emerson states that “to be great is to be misunderstood” (171). According to Emerson, I need to pursue my own ideas, even at the cost of being misunderstood. That means staying true to myself and rejecting the opinions of others. Emerson emphasizes the importance of emotion over reason and defines self-reliance as staying true to what I believe in and rejecting conformity. If I believe strongly about something, then I should stay true to myself by being able to think independently.
