Who are we to defy the orders of our higher power? Are we allowed to stand up for what’s right and break the laws for our own beliefs or follow the rule of authority? Are we sheep’s who only do what we are told. Is that the same in Orwell’s case?
John F Kennedy once said, “A man does what he must - in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures - and that is the basis of all human morality.” Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell he touches base on morality which makes the reader question their beliefs. With every shot that Orwell fires the so-called beast did not give up and kept fighting making George Orwell fearful. George believes that he would look like a fool in front of thousands which he could not let that happened. People argued that Orwell didn’t want to shoot the elephant, but had too since that would have put his job on the line.
What’s a cop without the respect of the townspeople. So, Orwell did what anyone in his position would have done. Although Orwell killing the elephant was “justified” The unimportant small majority of people and the owner knew that the elephant meant no harm course the younger generation hated Orwell while his older advisory salute and praise him. In Pg.30 it states “Afterwards, of course, there were endless discussions about the shooting of the elephant. The owner was furious, Legally, I have done the right thing, for a mad elephant has to be killed like a mad dog if its owner fails to control it.” Although, he was put legally in the right and was given praise for shooting the elephant, the majority of people believe that the abuse that he suffered from the Burmese government is the reason behind Orwell hasty decisions. Orwell is oppressed by the empire, he serves. While working closely with the Burmese Government Orwell works a close-up view of the dirty work in Europe.
