In the book, Gold Medal Summer, by Donna Freitas, a gymnast, whose name is Joey Jordan, has a lot going on in her life. She has to handle the pressure of being a high-level gymnast. This is hard for Joey because her friend, Alex, has been with her every step of the way. On page 150 Alex states,”Gymnastics and I are over.” Joey has to keep going strong, even when her best friend quits, to reach her goal of winning regionals. Alex helped Joey keep her main rivals “under control” or keep them from bothering her. Joey had to persevere through Alex
The book that I chose to review was Summer ball by Mike Lupica. It is about a kid named Danny who let his basketball travel team to the league’s championship and won. The next year he is going to Right Way Basketball Camp, which is a camp designed for kids at the elite level of basketball.
when Paul walks over to play soccer with them. They all let Paul play with them, and that started the conversation after playing about soccer tryouts. This let Paul meet new people, and get new friends at his new school, Lake Windsor Middle School. This decision also gave Paul hope that the soccer team would accept him, and made Paul think, “If Joey was the best they could do for

The Olympic games were an athletic competition help in Greece around every four years from 776 B.C.E. In 776 B.C.E, the first olympics were held in Athens where many competitors clashed during the sporting events. The olympics then stopped in 393 C.E. due to Theodosius I’s orders on stopping the olympic events. Later during 1896, the modern olympics began to take place. The olympics were different from the ancient olympics in that the competition was shaped due to social, political, and economic reasons.
Throughout the story, Shawn uses a ton of imagery to really capture the moment because, considering she is an Olympic, gold-medal gymnast, there are loads of moments that she wants to share with her readers. Such as, at one point during her gymnastics career, she arrives at a gymnastics training camp, and it is obviously not what she expected to come upon because she states, “Huge peacocks roamed around in the field right outside our dorms, mingling with groups of turkeys. There were also mules, camels, donkeys, chicken, and geese. Oh, and to make things more interesting, there were snakes everywhere” (Johnson 45). As the reader feasts their eyes on this sentence, it makes them view and identify what they would think it looked like. If Shawn were to not use imagery in that sentence, it wouldn’t have been so compelling on the ability to imagine the situation and how it appeared.
Since the death Joey Ryan couldn't open up to anyone about how he felt even to his girlfriend Anna Almen. First Ryan starts seeing N.A.T.E( Then Next Accident Terrible Experience) everywhere in school even in his drawings, (quote:pg 32) “ It was a lie, because Nate wasn't just someone I drew. I couldn't get away from him. This quote means that Ryan can't focus on anything because of Nate and now he is in every drawing that ryan draws. This caused Ryan to think that he should keep everything to himself and not ask for help. Second on the first day of practice the coach wants to Ryan privately in his office. Hoping that it had nothing to do with Joey Ryan goes to the meeting, but turns the coach wants him to take Joey’s spot as the “Standoff”, (quote:pg 77) “ That's Joey’s spot. I couldn't be fly half, Coach. Please” ” This quotes explains that Ryan can't move on from the death of his best friend Joey because Ryan can play the spot perfectly but just the fact that he has to wear Joey’s uniform scares him enough to not answer the coach. The third had happened to Ryan Dean because of Joey’s death was that he couldn't sleep at night. Throughout the book whenever Ryan went to sleep he would feel terrified and have some sort of seizure. (quote:pg 97) “ I couldn't move. I felt dizzy, like i was disconnecting from my body, and everything looked fuzzy and swirling.” Ryan was beyond scared and he didn't know
In the book, it says “Mike is getting a bad break, you know. He’s a good player.”(pg36) This shows how Joey cares about his brother, and wants the best for him. In the article “Rich in Thought: Not Every Olympian Gets Medal,” Richard Paloma mentioned the increasingly self-congratulatory society, which is insisting on the “everyone gets a trophy” custom, particularly in many youth sports league and schools. For instance, the schools which have some “commencement” ceremony and awards to make the students feel special by just moving along to the next grade. The author believes that to build children’s self-esteem, a child must be taught to accept failure and learn from his or her failure to accomplish goals.
“Freedom Summer”, a book by Bruce Watson, talks about that historic time of 1964 in Mississippi. He explains in detail about the events that went on. Even the most painful details from that summer he has you relive as he tells about them. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee went to Mississippi to educate African Americans and help them vote. Watson talks about the murder of three innocent people while down there in Mississippi. Three people that were young and just helping African Americans be educated were murdered for helping. He uses many different quotes from those that were there or experienced what went on. All these to tell the story so important because it shaped American democracy. It made sure that African Americans had
self. Joey faces an internal conflict with himself. He calls himself a coward because he doesn’t stand up for himself when people like Erik and Authur make fun of his brother’s death. The conflict appears when the text says “”He stood up to people when he had to.” Joey’s voice dropped even lower.
Never give up. Always keep going. Try hard. Practice makes perfect. The Marble Champ by Gary Soto is a great story. A girl named Lupe is not good at sports but she finds something athletic that she could be good at. She found marbles. She practiced until she got so good, she won the marbles championship. For this matter, I think a possible theme in this story is to never give, just like Lupe did. A couple reasons why, are because she practices, perseveres, and always gives 100% effort.

Wednesday, April 7th, 1994 started out like any other day, I was attending Jr. hHigh sSchool, in St. George Utah. As a I was a young 12 year old girl that was obsessed with gymnastics, I breathed it, studied it, and lioved it. Gymnastics was my Life.! I daydreamed about competing in front of hundreds of people, lights dimmed down, the spotlight right on me as I performed each skill I worked so hard at perfecting each day at practice. I would picture myself going over my routines, every step, every pose, each body positions, how I’d present myself, f . . . . everything. I wanted to be a college gymnast.
Courage was portrayed in the two main characters, Joey and the boy. They both had courage to fight through the war. They never gave up but along the way they both seemed to help people around them. In conclusion of the movie the three main themes are what brought Joey
