“Housewife” by Anne Sexton conveys the themes of love, marriage, and relationships by using the poetic techniques of imagery, personification, and tone. The imagery portrayed throughout this poem conveys how women who are married are also married to their house. The title of this poem creates this image of what a “Housewife” is. The house is personified with humanistic qualities and the poem contains sexual references that connect the roles of living as a housewife. The sexual imagery portrayed in these lines is the aggressive nature of men and “enter by force” suggests that rape is being forced upon the women. This shows me that men just impose forceful demands and are usually sexually abusive in a family where male dominance is prominent. The husband feeling the need to forcefully have sex with the woman shows how not only is this not consensual, but she is seen as an object of possession because of her title of a wife. It is expected for woman to please her husband and attend to her domestic duties as a wife. The stereotype of male dominance is embedded in power and this is shown through the imagery. Therefore, this negative sexual inference is compared to how the house is abusive as well as a pleasure to some women. The sad part about this is that most women who become a housewife will have a 24/7 connection with the household objects, similar to a cell, which can be seen as abusive relationship.
Saying that “A woman is her mother” (9), suggests that men usually marry women who have similar qualities as their mother. I’ve heard the expression that men marry their mothers because part of maintaining their power has to do with having that woman to take care of them as their mother did.
