Richard Rodriguez is an American writer who became well-known for his success in the writing industry. Rodriguez is commonly known as the author of Hunger of Memory: also called The Education of Richard Rodriguez in which entails a narrative around his academic expansion. In “Achievement of Desire,” Richard Rodriguez articulates a narrative that has become part of his own story. This story includes a story of our common experience that necessitates growing up, leaving home, becoming educated, and entering the world. Throughout his process, Rodriguez believes that process of our common experience that is required for growing up is important for the adult as the experience separates from his childhood. Though his common believes favor some people, the question still arises, stating “are there sections or passages that defy universal application? Is his autobiography representative of your story?”
According to Richard Rodriguez, his assumptions regarding everyone going through similar situational issues in life is the process of becoming an adult. Consequently, what makes everyone’s issues differ, is the way they experience such process, which makes their life unique. Ex. Single parent, siblings, separation from family.
In his account, Rodriguez express that “A primary reason for my success in the classroom was that I couldn’t forget that schooling was changing me and separating me from the life I enjoyed before becoming a student.” (534) This shows that most of his success
