I am Legend
Almost all stories with the genre dystopian can relate back to the theme loss of humanity in some way. The dystopian movie I am Legend does not break the stereotype, with this dystopian story being told with loss of humanity as the plot. The movie was directed by Francis Lawrence, he is most well known for his work with dystopian movies, especially in his work on the Hunger Games series, Britney Spears Movie, and I am Legend. This movie takes place in New York City, with the city abandoned all but the main character Robert and the monsters that only come out in the dark. Robert is immune to the disease that turns people into these monsters, staying in the city so he can find a cure. The movie I am Legend used heroism, multiple symbols, and narrative transport to represent the theme loss of humanity.
The butterfly is one symbol from the movie that connects to the theme loss of humanity. The butterfly was used multiple times in the movie, to show that regardless of this scenario that the main character Robert is in, there is always hope and from the ugly world there can be something beautiful. The butterfly is first shown in the movie when Roberts daughter was playing with a butterfly, this scene was a flashback to show that there was life at one time that had hope in it. Near the end of the movie, Robert is trapped in his lab with only a sheet of glass between himself and a mob of monsters. When the monsters keep hitting the glass, the breaks in the glass made

When one hears the title I Am Legend being mentioned, they usually associate it with Will Smith and the terrific job he did in portraying the protagonist of the story Robert Neville. However, what they typically leave out is the equally terrific job done by author Richard Matheson coming up with the storyline and writing the original book version. While Richard Matheson’s post-apocalyptic science fiction book, I Am Legend, and Francis Lawrence’s post-apocalyptic science fiction movie, I Am Legend, both have similarities and differences, in the end, the original book version prevails mainly because the movie version alters the original storyline too much.
The butterfly has become a symbol for the 1.5 million children murdered in the holocaust. During the holocaust many children were put into concentration camps, they knew they were going to die. They carved hundreds of butterflies with their nails or stones on the walls of the prisons. I believe these butterflies represented their souls. They had a meaning. The butterflies were supposedly a message of hope, that despite the fact that they would be dead before long, their souls would not die. Just like how a larva turns out into a butterfly an flies out of the cocoon, similar once they die, they would completely come out of their suffering and hardships and once again live life in peace and freedom. A butterfly is so awakening and charming which
Right after Simon reaches the shelter, he squats down and looks at the clearing; where he realizes that “nothing moved but a pair of gaudy butterflies that danced round each other” (58). The quiet ambience is further reinforced with the words “nothing moved”, as it connotes a level of silence and calmness. Even the diction of the word “butterflies” adds a positive connotation to the image as One can also see visual imagery in this part of the passage. The reader can visually imagine the beauty of the butterflies fluttering and “dancing” in the scenery while nothing else moves. This imagery, along with the diction helps the reader picture a very peaceful and placid place. Later in the passage, as the Sun starts to set and darkness begins to pour out in the sky, the “candle-buds opened their wide white flowers glimmering under the light that pricked down from the first stars” (59). Positive diction is also used here. The word “white” further represents this sense of peace and also purity of the
The symbolized inferior butterfly has been killed by a more superior human. Killing a butterfly doesn’t usually come to people as a huge occurrence but this really is a small event turned major because it alters the future timeline. The theme of this story is a metaphor on society because in the post-world war era this was an important message, one action from a high ranking official, or even a small person doing a dangerous deed could most definitely cause panic and have far greater impact on society, just as the two World Wars did.
The Moths symbolize the subjugations/oppression that one may face within life. The narrator, a fourteen year old adolescent girl wants nothing to do with the cultural norms imposed upon her. It is pointed out that she “wasn’t even pretty or nice like my older sisters” her “hands were too big to handle the fineries of crocheting or embroidery” ,and was subsequently ridiculed by being called “Bull Hands”. She also had no interest in religion as she would skip mass and eventually get into trouble with her patriarchal figure Apa (her father). She did not conform to the roles expected of her; she felt alone
In some cases butterflies represent beauty, freedom, and imagery. In the Time of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez, The Mirabal sisters represent honor and freedom by the way they react in the book. An example of Minerva Mirabal exemplifying freedom is when she says, “I stare at Manuel de Moya as if pinning him to the wall. ‘I’d sooner jump out that window than be forced to do something against my honor’” (111). This quote explains how Minerva will stick for her true roots, and will not ever do anything to dishonor her family. Minerva and the rest of the Mirabal sisters do what they think is right and will do whatever it takes to stay true to what they believe in. Another example of the Mirabal sisters representing a butterfly is when
In conclusion, In the Time of the Butterflies, is a very touching and breathtaking book that embedded the historical event into a chronological story that showed the symbolic and thematic topics that occurred in the time periods the book was set in which was from 1930’s-1990’s where Dede was telling the
The main symbolic imagery in the story happens one day when Penny and Primrose decide to go and wonder in the forest just like any other curious and adventurous little child does. To a place that would seem like a mystery or just fun to go and look at. As they are in the forest wandering around they come into contact with a Thing, a thing they’ve never seen, smelled, or heard before. They see this thing it’s a worm-like monster gliding through the forest leaving tails of smile and it’s such a horrendous sight that they never forget it. All the descriptions lead up to the bigger picture of what the Thing really represents in the story and what back ground it has to tell.
During the 1930s - 1960s in the Dominican Republic there was a dictatorship going on by Rafael Trujillo. Trujillo ran the Dominican Republic as his own personal possession. He and his friends held nearly 60 percent of the country's resources. If things didn’t go Trujillo’s way then that person who broke the law would be either prisoned or vanished. In her book, “In the Time of the Butterflies”, Julia Alvarez explores many different themes, such as Family, Courage, and Freedom. Each of the Mirabal sisters had different personalities. Patria the oldest sister was the most religious. Dedé the second eldest was the only sister who survived. Minerva the third Mirabal sister was the one who was more wrapped up in the revolution. Maria Teresa the youngest of the sisters just wanted to be like her oldest sisters. The butterfly is a symbol for the main characters, the Mirabal sisters. Butterflies are unique, they represent freedom, and they have a very short life span. The Mirabal sisters, much like the butterflies were unique, and died young. They had to sacrifice their lives in order to be free like butterflies.
Butterflies are often used to reveal big ideas. As an example, Simon description of said wildlife changes throughout the novel following changes in his personal life. Butterflies go from “returning to their roots,”(58) to “deserting the open space.”(151). The opposing ways that butterflies are mentioned creates the idea that they symbolize Simon no longer conforming to the group’s idea of a submissive follower. Simon is instead having revelations of his own and choosing to follow a different path. Simon being comfortable in his own skin and aware that you know what’s best for yourself shows a maturity he previously lacked. In the same manner Jack provides an image of butterflies being too preoccupied in the clearing to stop dancing.(149). The authors word choice develops the idea of Jacks savagery because it is eerily similar to the phrase associated with characters killing. Yet again the butterflies represents Jack. It seems to reveal how Jack is to focused on the pleasure he gets from taking a life to feel any remorse and stop. Remorse is necessary to prove a person still has trace amounts of good in them. recognizing the
Richard Matheson, the most prominent American author in the horror genre, who published the preeminent horror novel, I Am Legend in 1954, renders Robert Neville as the hero of the novel as he struggles to overcome a constant battle against the vampires and his subconscious mind. At the end of the novel, Robert Neville can be interpreted to finally have the ability to see the world through the perspective of the vampires which, ultimately, leads him to be able to understand them. Matheson reveals the true monster to be not the vampires nor Robert Neville, but prejudice. However, Matheson first establishes a connection between Robert Neville and the audience. This connection allows the message, that prejudice is capable of being the darkest
The film, I Am Legend is a post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith. It was released on December 14th, 2007. This film is actually the third adaptation of Richard Matheson’s novel of the same name from 1954. Smith plays virologist Robert Neville, who lives in New York City in 2012, which is inhabited by animalistic victims of the virus. He is immune to a vicious man-made virus originally created to cure cancer and works to
The next stanza begins with possibly the most wonderful line in the poem, which speaks to personal survival, joy, and the continuation of life: “You laughed with the spirit of your husband who would toss stars!” (Harjo). Here Harjo uses the metaphor again, this time to compare the widow’s tears to a butterfly, which is both beautiful and fragile. But here, because of the Butterfly Dance, it takes on a special meaning, bringing their daughter into the circle of death and rebirth.
