If there was a favorable circumstance under which one could endeavour all their hopes and visions, wouldn’t one pursue it? The American Dream was introduced as an interpretation to cause the people of America in the early twentieth century to work tougher. The American Dream is the opportunity to reach the goals one sets for themselves. It is about having your dream job and life one has always fantasized about. The dream is also about having freedom and equality. In the novel, “Of Mice & Men”, John Steinbeck uses symbols and motifs such as the vicious slaughtering of virtuous animals, Crooks’ rubbish bunkhouse and Lennie and George’s deception of an ideal farm to exhibit the perception that materialistic success results in happiness is a major flaw in our thinking about the American dream, and it is this thinking which makes the dream unattainable for many.

If the country seeks to be at the top right now that they will learn nothing and not remain there for long. He is saying a strong and successful nation or race learns how to build a good foundation understanding that it is up our next generations to understand what their responsibilities are to whatever they obtain.

Now put foundations under them…” this qoute can mean a million things but the meaning I get reading it, is if you have big goals for yourself why cut yourself short of them, dream big work hard and you would be amazed at the foundations of life you can create. This qoute can mean little goals or big goals. My life right know actually relates to this qoute, always being told i was to small not big enough, as a kid i would always dream of playing major league baseball, playing divison one college baseball and recieving a scholarship which less than 5% of kids in the country yet. I can personaly say dream big and big things can happen if you put your mind to it.

Lastly, when an individual does not fulfill their dreams, they will not be happy. This is similar to the thought of the American dream, but more generalize to any type of dream; any want which a person may have. If a want or dream is significant enough and the person knows that they cannot have it, this may lead to them breaking down, the same way Marcus did in this quote “[t]he sobs that came then didn't sound like my voice. They sounded like an animal noise, maybe a donkey or some kind of big cat noise in the night. I sobbed so my throat burned and ached with it, so my chest heaved.”

In the poem “Pass/Fail,” by Linda Pastan, the author speaks of an uncanny feeling of failure always looming. The persons desire to persevere is not enough to actually succeed; for there will always be a task waiting to be failed. The poem has a theme; it is a representation of a life goal that can not be achieved by simply dreaming. It takes initiative and courage to stand up and aim for that goal in life. Although the poem follows a negative prospective of achieving greatness, the writer does specify the ambition that one has will not matter for their perseverance will not be enough to pass the examination destined to fail the dream one tries to achieve. The author seems to disagree with the American dream, an idea that everyone has the opportunity to achieve success with hard work. The fact of the matter is no matter what, people must work for success because success is not achieved without ambition for something greater.

For example, when my grandmother was young, she used to dream about being surrounded by a loving family. She was an orphan. She often tells me stories about how she would lie awake at night dreaming about just that. Many kids in her orphanage used to tell her that none of them were ever going to have a life like that “Why would we?” they said, “can you not see not even our parents wanted us!” Despite all the harsh words, she kept on dreaming and overcame all her obstacles and has reached her goal. Even though your goals might seem impossible, if you dream big you might get just that.
