Auschwitz. The concentration camp were the most people were killed, too be exact, six million. In the novel The Boy In Striped Pajamas the main character is Bruno. Bruno is a nine year old german boy who is very naive about the Holocaust, jews, and what happened to jews. The Holocaust was a depressing time in Europe for the jewish. A group of people called the Nazi’s killed jews because of one man who blamed the jews for Germany's problems. That man was Adolf Hitler. Hitler put all the jews in concentration camps where they did labor and got little to no food. Most people died to hunger and exhaustion, the others died in gas chambers. In the novel The Boy In Striped Pajamas it was bad that the main character, Bruno, was naive about the Holocaust because it’s what lead to his death and if he hadn’t he wouldn’t have felt guilty about lying to Lieutenant Kotler.
In The Boy In Striped Pajamas it was bad that Bruno, the main character, was naive about the Holocaust because it’s what lead to his death. In the last chapter of The Boy In Striped Pajamas Bruno and his friend Shmuel go on a mission to find Shmuel’s papa. Shmuel, is a jew that Bruno found on the other side of the fence. Bruno and Shmuel form a plan to find Shmuel’s papa by going on the other side of the fence, to do this Bruno had to look a jew ‘“Pretending to be a person from the other side of the fence.’” (Boyne 205). Bruno thought that on the other side of the fence was a happy place with everyone playing, talking, and having fun. But because Bruno was naive, he was wrong. Bruno wants to go home but not without finding Shmuel’s papa “He had promised his friend that and he wasn’t the sort to go back on a promise…” (Boyne 208-209). Because he didn’t go back on his promise he got caught in the middle of a “march” and Bruno get pushed into a airtight room. Bruno and Shmuel died in a gas chamber because they didn’t want go back on a promise. If Bruno wasn’t naive he would have not died in that gas chamber and he would have lived to tell the tale to others. In the novel The Boy In Striped Pajamas it was bad that Bruno was naive because it’s the thing that lead to his death.

"Who are all those people? And what are they all doing there?" (4.190), Bruno asks. This is what the book, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, is based on. It informs the reader that the holocaust occurred. Who were these people, and what were they doing there? There are many examples on why it was a bad thing that Bruno was oblivious about the Holocaust. The holocaust was a gruesome time where Jews were killed for their beliefs. The leader of the Nazi party was Hitler. He believed that Jews were bad people and they should be punished for their crimes. This started a period of time where Jews were rounded up and put into concentration camps to later be killed or put to do the hard work that no one else wanted to do. Bruno lived during
In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, it was awful that Bruno was naïve about the Holocaust because it caused him to hurt himself and Shmuel. Bruno was trying to be nice and helpful, but ended up only hurting Shmuel, as the book says:
The Boy In The Stripped Pajamas by John Boyne is a 2006 holocaust novel seen through the innocent eyes of a young boy named Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a German concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has shocking and unexpected consequences. During the novel, prejudice and discrimination are shown to have many effects on numerous of the characters such as Bruno and Shmuel, Discrimination, or in other words, treating a person or group of people differently, especially on the fields of race, age and sex is taken place by a multitude of people such as Gretel, by following Kotler’s decisions, Gretel is discriminating because she is supporting the Germans belief. Prejudice on the other hand, is another word for an unfair and unreasonable opinion or feeling, especially when formed without enough thought or knowledge. Lieutenant Kotler one of Father's soldiers shows a great example of this as well as discrimination while Bruno at the end of the novel shows he fights against prejudice and discrimination
“How do I look?” Bruno asked as he was putting his pajamas on. Shmuel responded with a nod indicating that they look alike. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas portrays a family during the German war and all the struggles they had faced. Bruno, who is the son of this family, wanted nothing but to go on an adventure. He even went against his mother’s strict orders not to leave and found himself outside a concentration camp. Children tend to have their own views on the world which results in them not seeing how harsh the world truly is especially when it comes to the aspect of race. In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the power of rhetoric is shown in the culture between the German’s and the Jew’s lives and the
During the time period 1933 to 1945, a very devastating event occurred in history, the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a time where Adolf Hitler created an army of people to kill Jews so he could create the “perfect race”. Those with blonde hair and blue eyes were safe, but everyone else was considered a Jew, therefore being someone Hitler didn’t want to include in his “perfect race”. In the end he had killed about six million Jews, which tore apart many families (history.com). In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, it talks about the Holocaust in the point of view of a young boy named Bruno. Bruno was very naive and oblivious to the situation happening around him. He didn’t quite understand what was happening, nor did he really want to know. In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, it was good that Bruno was naive about the Holocaust throughout the novel because it allowed him to
In the novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, the author highlights the main characters point of view to convey the theme that children who are sheltered from bad happening around them have a different, more positive, view of the world. Set during WWII, the story tells of a young boy named Bruno who meets another young boy, called Shmuel, and they form an incredible friendship. At the beginning of the book Bruno and his family are forced to move to Auschwitz. Bruno is very curious about many things, so it is only natural that when he sees the people in the striped pajamas behind a fence out of his window, he decides to check it out. That is when he meets Shmuel, a young Jew.
During the movie, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, many scenes displayed Bruno’s helplessness and inability to help neither the Jews, nor himself in the end. For instance, Lieutenant Kurt revealed to Bruno’s mother about the concentration camps without the knowledge of Bruno’s father. This enraged him so he sought for his revenge by putting Lieutenant Kurt on the spot with the topic of his father, who was said to have left the country in opposition to the German ways. Lieutenant Kurt then released all his anger and frustration on Pavel, a kind Jew who tended to Bruno’s injury after falling off his swing in the beginning of the movie, right in front of Bruno’s eyes. Later, the clueless Bruno found out that he was beaten to death when his sister said that Pavel will never be coming back. Then, there was another scene where Shmuel, Bruno’s new Jewish friend who was also eight years old, was temporarily called out from the concentration camp because they Germans needed a pair of small hands to dry and polish all the glassware at Bruno’s house. Knowing how Shmuel is always hungry, Bruno gave him a few cookies. Right after, Lieutenant Kurt came into the room and found Shmuel eating so he automatically assumed that he stole
The Holocaust was one of the most horrific time periods where unthinkable and unimaginable crimes were committed against Jews, Gypsies and other racial groups. No one could have ever imagined the numbers of innocent people Hitler massacred. Until liberation millions of Jews were sent to death and concentration camps, such as Auschwitz. With tons of severe and cruel ways of extermination they were stuck in this horrible place. Because of the horrific living conditions, forced labor, mass murdering, and other inhumane activities, Auschwitz was the most feared, and the largest Nazi Death Camp of World War 2.
In the Boy in the Stripped Pajamas, there are scenes that include extreme force being used against Jews, at one point even being used against the little boy, Shmuel, for eating food that was not meant for him. Another scene shows how the teacher meant for their homeschooling was teaching them that there is no such thing as a good Jew and that they are all inherently bad. Bruno fails to believe that a child, or anyone can be seen as bad when they have not done anything. Bruno is the voice of the human conscious that is lacking from German perpetrators. A Jew is not someone who is born evil and they are not all trying to bring about the destruction of the Aryan race. The movie is very apt at showing the human side of the Holocaust and showing to others that pain does not discriminate based on race or any socioeconomic category. At one point in the movie the
The holocaust was one of the most tragic genocides in world history. Tons of Jews each day were being purged off because of the hate of the Nazi germans. Adolf Hitler was the leading man in this extermination of the Jewish community. During these times Jewish man, women and, children had to try their hardest to survive in the concentration camps. Camps like Buchenwald, Neuengamme and, Bergen-Belsen are the camps that were Jewish people put in forced labor, starved and, tortured. Camps such as Auschwitz and Belzec are where the mass killing happens.
Bruno not knowing about the camp being a Jewish concentration camp was one of the reasons he went into the camp in the first place. If Bruno had known about Out-With and the real identity of it then he would never have explored to find the dot that became a speck that became a blob that became a figure that became a boy. Since Bruno didn’t know about Out-with and the holocaust he went to explore and find the dot, and that dot became his best friend for a short life. The innocent dot that Bruno found ended up being the tragedy that caused his death. Bruno’s naivety lead him into Out-With along side his best friend for life, Shmuel. Bruno and Shmuel had never played together and Bruno was leaving back home for Berlin that day, the best friends for a short life wanted something to remember about each other. “‘I’d like to have seen it’ He added’. . .’Well?’ said Shmuel. ‘Why don’t you then?’. . .’it would be a great adventure. Our final adventure. I could do some exploring at last’” (Boyne 197-198). Bruno’s best friend for life lead him to the end of both of their lives. Bruno was naive about many things, but nothing more than the situation he had to make the best of and live
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a devastating book about the friendship of two boys that came from two different walks of life. Bruno, is the son of a World War II commandant in charge of Auschwitz. His friend, Shmuel, is a Jewish captive in Auschwitz. Bruno 's sister, Gretel, mother, and father move to a new house, in the middle of the country, next to father’s camp. Bruno and Gretel are homeschooled in order to control what they’re exposed to. Because of them being homeschooled Bruno has no one to play with. Bruno has always dreamed of being a famous adventurer. On the day he moved into his house he noticed he could see his father’s concentration camp from his window. His mother wants to keep Bruno away from the camp so she insisted that he only play in the front yard and in the house. As all little boys do, he ignored his mother’s warnings and decides to go exploring the backyard. While exploring Bruno found the fence of the concentration camp and he began to walk parallel to the fence. He “saw a dot, that became a speck, that became a blob, that became a figure, that became a boy” (Boyne 104) and that boy was Shmuel. They were friends ever since. Well, until they died a horribly ironic death. Everyone should read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas because it shows many different perspectives on the controversial segregation of people; from the innocence of childhood to the stern perspective
Faith, simple small five-letter word but has a colossal critical meaning. Faith means to have complete trust or confidence in someone or something, simply believing. The author believes that having faith is very important and which is an essential necessity of life. In both texts, "Night" and "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" faith is tested during their experiences and torture that they endured during a traumatic era. The two texts make one wonder how anyone could continue to have faith within themselves and others during complicated, critically life-threatening times. These two selections show us that no matter the circumstance or how tough and traumatizing a situation can become that one is to always believe and maintain faith within God, yourself and others. Both texts shows that faith and believing can change things and get you farther through a critical situation. In both Elie Wiesel's "Night" and "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," the theme of faith is developed through friendship, fear and innocence.
They say that ignorance is bliss. That is somewhat true, as not understanding the atrocities in our world would surely make a happier person. However, innocence can also lead to calamity. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne, is a coming of age story about Bruno, the son of a Nazi Commandant under Adolf Hitler. Bruno was initially very ignorant of what was happening in the world and was very immature about moving from Berlin. As the days went by, he got used to his new home and his thoughts were maturing, as he started thinking with logic and rationale. Bruno finally understands that he has to be a good person to everyone regardless what others might think. His character has strongly developed. Despite Bruno being unaware of his situation and his father being a Nazi, he matures from being childish and unsatisfied for moving to finally finding purpose in life by being a good human being.
There have been a lot movies based in World War II. The one that stands out the most is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Made in 2008, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, is a Holocaust movie filmed from the frame of reference of an eight-year-old boy. The director-writer, Mark Herman took the story of two boys, written by John Boyne, and developed a masterpiece (The Boy in). With the use of these two boys, Mark Herman takes the divide of cultural bias and economic injustices and links them together. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is an accomplished film made with incredible character development, heart-warming acting, powerful viewpoint, and a meaningful message.
