A new favorite quotation of mine is “don’t let the circumstances define you or confine you, make them refine you” by Eddie Rivera. Eddie Rivera addressed my freshman seminar class with a presentation titled celebrating our differences: A journey through diversity. And that’s just what we did, listening to personal stories about his childhood and Puerto Rican culture inspired students in the class to share their experiences and cultures. Eddie Rivera has held several work positions in and out of the hotel business. He moved from Puerto Rico to Los Angeles in 1973 taking a job at Bank of America. He continued on to work for Citicorp then, following a transfer to training and development in San Francisco he began working for Citibank. Rivera then moved to Las Vegas and worked a long and fulfilling career at a medical practice named Jacobs and Modaber MD. After 11 years at Jacobs and Modaber MD, his parents fell ill. Eddie took a year off to care for his parents in Puerto Rico, returning to Las Vegas to help open the Bellagio. After the opening of one of Las Vegas’s most prestigious hotels, he began working as the director of human resources for MGM …show more content…
We discussed that we are all one race, the human race and how prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination are what hinder people’s ability to be open to the advantages of diversity. Eddie told us about his massive heart attack on July 13th 2013 and how each moment you are alive is a learning experience. You can choose to be bitter or get better. We talked about what it means to live everyday with intention that it is crucial to make life happen not just let it happen. Mr. Rivera suggested having a journal and writing our personal, professional, physical, financial, and spiritual intentions for every day. Eddie wanted us to understand then when you are self-aware and understand your own intentions you are often more open minded and willing to
In this story, Carolina and Savvie are sisters that can't be apart from each other. “I will Follow you” by Roxane Gay follows a story about these two girls that have lived a very difficult life and all they have is each other, they keep thinking back and forth about their very traumatic past as little as ten and eleven years old. When the perpetrator (Mr.Peter) returns to their lives he sends a letter from prison to the girls and asks them for forgiveness. These girls are put to the hardest test, will they let Mr.Peter still take advantage of them after they are
Today I got to learn a few different things. I learned about the social determinants of health and learned that they are focused on things that could negatively impact a patient’s health. When charting these in the system, some of them to look at include, Abuse, environmental, housing, toxic stress, family concerns, work history and transportation needs. Mrs. Faranda, showed me how to chart it based on a phone call made with a patient. I also learned some about a few of the community partners. This include crisis assistance, Med assist, housing resources and the lions club. These are all resources that are available to members of the community. Lastly, I learned more about advance directives. I learned that you have to be at least 18 years of age to fill out an advance directive. I also learned that you can name someone as your healthcare power of attorney, as long at the are 18 years old and a
Life is a constant roller coaster ride of grueling struggles and bittersweet accomplishments. There are also times where one neither wins nor loses, but lessons are always learned. What we do during that time of strife and struggle defines who we will become later. Those who embrace the change and hardship, while finding a way to make it through, will become stronger in the end. In “The Dreamer”, by Junot Diaz, the dream of a young girl to become a nurse never comes to fruition, but her struggles and sacrifices enabled her to move out of a Third World country. Due to his mother’s sacrifices, her son Diaz is able to live a better life, achieving his goals of becoming a writer because she pushed him to better himself with her courage.
Guilt can Affect how you think about someone else just to forget about that one thing that is bothering you. The book I am reading about is We Were Here by Matt De La Pena. the main characters in the book are Miguel, Rondell and Mong. One of the secondary sources is “Because guilt is painful people often find ways to soothe their feelings”(Markman). After all this secondary source explains how guilt can be painful for someone, especially if they are trying to hide it from other people. In the book We Were Here the main character Miguel uses guilt to in a way that he doesn’t focus too much on it, but the guilt can’t go away since he keeps on remember what he did . Also, the fact that his mother never wanted to talk to him right after what he
The book Breaking Through, by Francisco Jimenez is about his autobiographical novel. According to Wikipedia, he received both his master’s degree and his Ph.D. from Columbia University, and he is the director of the ethnic studies program. In this book, he wrote about his life and his challenging life in the United States, and how he overcame the challenge. His family moved to the U.S.A from the Guadalajara, Mexico when he was 4 years old, so he faced too many problems to live in the U.S.A. However, the major struggles that Francisco Jimenez faces were language and money, but he overcame them.
I chose Jimmy Dean's quote because it encompasses several life lessons. For example, it has taught me that I should be hopeful and optimistic for my future, despite any obstacles I might encounter. Growing up, I played competitive softball. During one of my first few games, my team was falling behind and everybody was
''Everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal in every which way.'' I chose this quote because Harrison Bergeron is about what life would be like with total equality under government control but not the same equality people would kind of equality. ''For all I know I am the only man wearing the evidence of murder as a wristwatch strap.'' Until the end of Moose and Sparrow the murderer of moose was unknown and his death was unexplained. It shows how smart and resourceful Cecil is. ''Well this is where fate, and even bigger force than Priscilla steps in.'' In the story Monk Klutter made all the students live in fear but when he messed with the wrong boy Priscilla had to step in. This quote is relevant to the story because this story deals with karma and fate. after Priscilla steps in monk was left in the locker for a week, karma at its finest. ''There are so many Margrets and not all of them have a Lori, to help them.'' In a Matter of Trust, Lori had been told a secret by her friend Margret. Though Lori knew that Margret was doing something wrong, she was put under the pressure of keeping it a secret, but in the end she ends
In this week’s lecture the theme of choice was “Minority Experiences”. By far, this is my favorite theme because the readings not only looked at race but other things like disability. Also rather than initially focusing on blacks and whites as a race other races were looked at as well. In “Being a Chink” the Asian side of race was demonstrated and in “Disability” handicapped individuals where looked at as a minority. “I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr. was a demonstration of one man trying to unite minorities on one front. In his speech Dr. King uses rhetorical devices to appeal to a crowd at large in Washington, DC. Prior to his speech he establishes his ethos in a way because of his life as a pastor. He also engaged in much peaceful
Upon hearing this Eddie feels awful and asks why the blue man died instead of Eddie. The blue man assures him that it was okay and that everything happens for a reason. “There are no random acts. That we are all connected. That you can no more separate one life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind” (Albom, 48). This was the first lesson for Eddie. That everything happens for a reason and that no life is a waste. “No life is a waste, the only time we waste is the time we spend thinking that we are alone.” (50)
Dr. Umar Johnson bought up a lot of different topics about his about and about what is going on around us in the world. One thing that stood out to me was dating outside of your race, No I am not racist and I don't have an issue with anyone dating outside of their race but my personal opinion is to marry inside of my ethnicity. White people would never know what we go through as black women and black men and on how we get judged and how we get treated or shot when getting pulled over. Most videos that go viral is about a black man getting shot for reaching over to get license, insurance, and registration, is that right? No because they aren’t giving the black men in the world a chance because the police officers are so scared for their lives
“Don’t ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take a life of it’s own.” Michelle Obama
"When you're out there partying, horsing around, someone out there at the same time is working hard. Someone is getting smarter and someone is winning" by Evan killham. I enjoy this quote because it teaches me how to use my time wisely, and to work hard in everything I do.
Ludacris does a remarkable job of portraying his message about the struggles that some adolescents are faced with. “Runaway Love”, by Ludacris, featuring Mary J. Blige (2007), represents the theme of struggle through hip-hop and rap music. It is about little girls who are “stuck up in the world on their own.” They have to take care of themselves because the people they are around do not care about them. They range from nine to eleven years in age, and their goal in life, at such a young age, is to run away from home. Ludacris is trying to get the listener to realize the struggles that even children have to face because adults are not the only ones who have problems, like most people believe. He is very successful in
Although a change in the equality and rights of the Black Community were meant to be created in the hopes and actions of people like Sam Cooke, years later Black men and women were still being poorly treated by the white man based on his or her color. This is important because we still see injustices being made towards the Black community today that is still not being given a full life of freedom and that is still waiting for an actual change to come. Between the two literary pieces “Conspiracy: A Suite” by Angel Nafis and “A Change is Gonna Come” released on December 22, 1964 by Sam Cooke from the album Ain’t That Good News, the discrimination and injustices of the past and present are recognized and a call to action is perceived.
The quote I initially was going to use for this speech was a little difficult to make a good speech about. I began my search
