In the article called, “Marla Malcolm Beck’s Three Keys to Hiring: Skill, Will and Fit,” Marla is interview about what she looks for when hiring. Marla also talks about what influenced her in her younger years. Marla says that her father influenced her greatly and she said her father had a very good work ethic. In the interview Marla was asked if she wanted to be in a leadership role and she responded by saying, “I just always ended up in them, even though I was shy” (Beck, 2015) Marla also talks about what she studied in college, which was political economy. She goes on to explaining a failure she had in college with an organization she ran. Marla tried to be more real and talked more about her mission for the organization and after that she
She once told me that she wanted to run for the president in Red Cross because she understands what colleges want and need. Amy succeeded and became the president in her senior years of high school. The overall experience for her wasn’t a journey that worth remembering, but the title of president represented glory and captured too much of attention over the true value of volunteering and helping people. When students know getting into dream school requires leadership experiences, they try to be a leader for the sake of the title which had hoodwinked the leaders and no actual service to be done. Surely like how Cain stated in her essay, the world is being filled with more and more of leaders who values the glorification of leadership over the service like my friend
Dorothy McFerrin’s answers during our interview about being an authentic leader confirmed my perception of her authenticity. Her commitment to community service and her unending dedication to seeking opportunities to better those communities was inspiring. I was overwhelmed with excitement in the fact that she would take the time to answer questions to help a Texas A&M student complete an assignment. Just another example of her taking the time to communicate and lead through focusing on the needs of others. I am grateful for this learning experience and her focus on taking risk and generating small wins has motivated me to want to step out and serve others. I appreciate her convictions to her values and I could be an authentic follower because

In his “Seven Lessons of Leadership,” David Gergen claims that “leadership starts from within.” This statement attributes leadership quality to the background of the leader. With sound ethics, a leader has a base for his or her actions. Alice Paul was intelligent, insatiably curious, and persistent beyond compare. These character traits originated in her childhood. Paul was brought up with Quaker traditions, which emphasized “self reliance, humility, probity, and service.” They encourage academic excellence and athleticism more than regular society. The highlighting of these values shaped Paul for her future (pg 5). Furthermore, Paul’s parents played a role in the assembly of her character. William Paul, her father, was harsh and unfriendly.
This is a case study analysis of The New Principal: Managing Human Resources by Jane A. MacDonald (2006). This case study focuses on issues a first year principal may face when entering her school for the first time. Ms. Vera Zola was not only a first year principal; she was also new to the school district. In her previous role as assistant principal, she was in a neighboring school district. In her new district, the Suburban Public School District (SPS), there were approximately 11,000 students enrolled (MacDonald, 2006). Ms. Zola was assigned to Roma Elementary, one of six elementary schools in the district. There were two middle schools and two high schools. Approximately 80% of high school graduates continued on to higher education or a trade school. Community members had diverse cultural backgrounds and lifestyles, and the community was growing.
When I began with the interview I saw and felt Bridget as a very humble women. I realized her personality trait with a leadership model and adaptability; she is extraverted, agreeable, and conscientious, with emotional stability and openness to experience. Her leadership model is strong, she has demonstrated through her promotions. Leadership is a crucial attitude a top manager must have because it leads to the result of providing efficient direction and motivating and inspiring the employees to be efficient. Bridget is a manager who is approachable, her cooperative, warm, and agreeable personality contages the employees. Employees enjoy
Any decisions we make can lead to a positive or negative outcome. In this case, the “need” for leadership experience had led me to unexpected surprises. I got involved in two clubs, Chinese Culture Club (CCC) and Adopt-an-Alleyway (AAA). In addition, I also joined the school badminton team. I knew being a member simply couldn’t satisfy college standard of leadership, so eventually, I took leadership position in both clubs. It was an amazing experience in the sense of gaining new knowledge and social bonding. I learned how to facilitate meetings, socialize with strangers, develop communication skills, and last but not least, create a group of close friends. Although I don’t support and disagree the institutional standards of leadership, but it forced me to experience moments I wouldn’t have done it myself. As much as I dislike colleges seeking students with superficial leadership experiences, I didn’t change my personality or to ignore my personal traits to gain these experiences unlike the young woman in the text. Hundreds of thousands clubs exits out there waiting for people to join them, so there is no reason to believe the young woman wasn’t able find one program that suits her personality without having to overhaul her own personal traits. Coincidently, the pressure to lead aligned with my unique personality. People that I met are super friendly and they inspired me to enjoy the service. Indeed, I take pleasures in the service. It
With the abundance of new freshman attending Alfred State, It can be quite overwhelming establishing relationships with new people that have very distinct characteristics. Domonique is a perfect example of someone with those distinct characteristics. She defines herself as a “natural born leader”, yet is one really “born” with the perspective, dedication, and motivation to be a leader, or rather anything for that matter? I believe one can, however just like Domonique, it’s the assistance from our mothers, fathers, and other loved ones that help push those traits forward. Domonique’s mother is the type of person that has been through a lot, but didn’t let those issues stop her from getting to where she is now, she doesn’t quit. That is one of
Angela Ahrendts is one of the most successful women in business of our generation. This is due largely in part to her exceptionally strong leadership skills. Every company that Angela has held a leadership role in has experienced great success. However, despite her many successes and achievements Ahrendts is describe as motivating and humble by her counterparts. This speaks volumes of not only her vast amount of business knowledge, but also to her ability to lead people in an effective, relationship-building manner. After much research on Ahrendts and her work at each company we conclude that she is predominantly a Theory Y leader and supports that with four key styles and traits. Among those are a balance of task-oriented leadership and relationship-oriented leadership, in addition to strong administrative skills and interpersonal skill. Ahrendts uses a combination of all of these styles and skills to effectively lead her subordinates and drive successful
Her early experiences in banking were almost always challenging and rewarding. She was enrolled in the bank’s management development program because of her education (a.B.A. in languages and some postgraduate training in business administration), her previous job experience, and her obvious intelligence and drive.
What major skills has Jovita Carranza demonstrated in her career at UPS that have made her a successful leader?
A person that has influenced almost every aspect of my life and has been pivotal in directing me in discovering my identity is my mother, Cathy Turner. This may seem like a cliché answer, and to others it might be, however, I know that I would not be who I am today without the benefit of her guidance and leadership. I believe Cathy took a Situational Theory approach to leading my siblings and I through life. Situational Theory is whenever leaders chose what style of leadership is needed—authoritative, democratic, laissez-faire, and any other type of approach—based on that particular context. If a leader adheres to this theory they are ready and willing to change their approach whenever necessary. Looking back on my childhood and my life as
Michelle’s life embodies the idea of a person who has the x-factor, she shows that leadership is something that is developed over time and learned through experiences. The x-factor is when individuals in a society spark creativity, it is a multi-discipline that borrows and synthesis existing intellectual resources to generate new ones and approach causation. (Burns, 2003). Michelle is a prime example of the ideals of the x-factor that crates a leader.
Princess Diana wasn’t a typical princess; she was special. She was not born into royalty, but instead married into it. Since Diana did not come from a royal background, it made it easier for the public to relate to her and her story. Diana had visions of how she wanted commoners to perceive her, as a commoner rather than royalty. As the people grew in love, Diana used her influence for good. She continued to fight and express her opinions about issues at hand. In the St. Ignatius College Preparatory (SI) Grad to Grad profile, the document outlines what types of leadership skills SI hopes for their students to develop (Profile 2020). The Profile hopes to influence students to “demonstrate basic leadership skills of an ability
Leadership is a skill that one is not born with, but is acquired through life experiences and interactions. Michelle Obama perseverance to attain a higher education, a concept foreign in her family, shows the dedication and determination a leader must have. As a leader, it is imperative that once you establish a mission or purpose, that you, as well as your team members, worked to accomplish that goal. Because of her perseverance, Michelle can be best identified as a pace setter, innovative and charismatic leader because through the various projects she undertook as her role of First Lady, she influences people through personality, inspires passion and the need to be active in one’s own community. For example, this can be seen in her role as Executive Director for the Chicago office of Public Allies where she mobilized youths and community to get active and set fundraising records for the organization that still stood 12 years after she left. Michelle influences people through her own success. Having attended Harvard Law, becoming a top attorney and later the first African American First Lady, she has influenced youths across the nation to believe that anything is possible, so long as they have faith. In accordance to the Leadership Theories, Michelle Obama can be categorized under the Authentic Leadership Approach; for these leaders, their leadership is genuine, develops over time, transparent and driven by moral values (Komives, Lucas&, McMahon). Projects such as Let’s
