Analysis Of Martin Luther King's Speech: A Dream

There is a reason why Martin Luther Kings, “I have a Dream,” speech stands and is recognized as one of the greatest speeches of all time. MLK’s form of rhetorical demands for justice for the indifference to the black community is a touchstone for all to express and relate to the American racial tragedies of their time. Focusing on some of the specific examples (facts) to “ground” MLK’s arguments, to help enforce the use of Metaphors to emphasize contrasting concepts, while following the theme of repetition throughout, “I have a dream.” Within the speech, through audio recordings, the solid firm voice that the preacher to the masses utilizes is a significant acceptance to the lifestyle and constant training that MLK faced throughout his entire life.

Martin Luther King Jr. built his speech around fighting unjust conditions placed on both African Americans and soldiers of the Vietnam war with non-violent protest. King is arguably the best speaker the world has seen, he knows how to get his audience passionate about the problems America faces while also informing them of what causes these problems.

Individuals that could be described as icons in their respective countries have delivered speeches meant to change their thinking pattern and inspire change. In the course of doing this, these icons have employed rhetoric devices and figurative language unbeknown to some of their listeners. Tommy Douglas and Martin Luther King Jr. did these to much effect. The general idea is that application of rhetoric devices always serves a purpose. Some may argue that application of more rhetoric devices or less rhetoric devices is useful. However, this paper shows that despite the small or full application of rhetoric devices, if done correctly will always serve its purpose. Douglas’s Mouseland and King’s I have a Dream speeches are both persuasive speeches even though the former uses one predominant literary device, while the latter combines multiple devices. The objective of this paper is to show that no application of rhetoric devices – whether in large or small magnitude or whether in combination or sole use – is superior or secondary to another if applied appropriately.

In these excerpts from his speech, he talks about his experiences as in what he has seen and heard. For example, he talks about how he watched both black and white men waging war against Vietnam, burning down huts and crushing men’s deepest dreams. Martin Luther King Jr. speaks about the cruel irony of this war when in Southwest Georgia and East Harlem the same thing is happening only its Us citizens fighting each other. This type of argument is compelling because it speaks of a horror that to most US citizens have no way to relate to and compares it to the Vietnam which citizens saw first hand. That author purpose is to persuade the people that all men are equal and deserve freedom so that a change needs to in our nation. It is for that reason that the “ I have a Dream”by Martin Luther king jr. is going to be used because he uses detail, figurative language, and reason why the negro deserve rights too. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was known to be one of the greatest speakers during the Civil Rights Movement. Mr. King’s choice of words for his speeches were very intelligent to his audiences. Martin Luther King was a very influential and passionate man who fought for what was rights. There were many people he didn’t agree with what he fought for and tried to put him down in many ways but that did effect his hope. He had many speeches but one of his most known was called “I have a Dream”.

After reading and analyzing Dr.Kings “Remaining Awake during a Revolution” commencement speech that he presented at Oberlin College during his graduation ceremony; he wanted the people to have a good visual on what he was explaining and talking about. King wanted to inform the people about what was going; so he used allusions, statics, and logos.

In an attempt to persuade his audience with his speech, Martin Luther King Jr states that bringing the Vietnam war into his “field of moral vision” should come as no surprise, as he is a preacher by calling. Using this statement in the beginning of his speech demonstrates his devotion to the cause of ethicality within the american people. Bringing the topic of vietnam to the people of NYC (the place of speech) would hopefully influence others views on the subject. He uses an emotional approach to the speech by mentioning how suctioning the men, skills, and money out of this country is detrimental, knowing the war-obsessed America would not put their energy or funds into aiding and rehabilitating the less fortunate. This leads King to announce that he believes war attacks poor communities.

King’s speech was directed towards the mistreated African Americans to stand up for their rights, because racism was a huge issue during that period. King’s main purpose was to persuade African Americans to fight for justice, which was granted to all according to the Constitution. To clearly persuade his audience, King uses rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos and logos in his speech. Additionally, King uses figurative language such as repetition, and techniques such as parallel phrases, organization, and choice of words, specifically in the title.

Good leadership is effective when the leader has a quality of fighting for his or her rights and has self-confidence. He established an immediate rapport with an ever changing audience and communicated on a meaningful level, by appealing to moral conscience of Americans standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
