INTRODUCTION In “The Masque of the Red Death,” Edgar Allan Poe uses tone and imagery to portray the characters in this short gothic fiction story. In this seemingly third person description, it is revealed to the readers that this story is in fact a first person narrative, with the narrator being the Red Death himself. The main character is Prince Prospero and from the beginning of the short story, he is far from a hero. When a deadly disease is discovered, instead of using his power and wealth to stop or help, Prospero takes some of his friends, and hides away in a secluded palace full of entertainment to pass the time, while the rest of the world suffers and dies off from the disease. The characters in Poe's story tried to isolate themselves from reality in their own little paradise. This is relatable in today's world, especially when it comes to personal relationships. It is easier to want to isolate yourself from reality, rather than face the truth. Poe's short story's narrator is not a tangible object. It is a death, not a real character. The red death is immediately disliked because of its deadliness and has no friends. The only thing that can contain it is the cloak that it was wearing as it roamed the castle. When the people in the castle finally took it off, they all died. They could not handle the horrors that lied within the empty body. BODY Ultimately, “The Masque of the Red Death” doesn't just acknowledge the inevitability of death, but also serves as a warning of the terrible consequences and relationships that can result from living a selfish life. The structure of my poem is supposed to mirror the jagged edge of a knife, representing the ups and downs of everyday life with the sharp clean backside. Phrases like “The dominating darkness” not only use imagery from Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death,” These experiences are what define who we are. “he is fighting this monster for all control” Just like the Red Death in the short story, once it appears it never leaves. When Prince Prospero is faced with a unforeseen dilemma, he walls himself in and tries to lock out his problems.
