Introduction
In New Zealand shared spaces are a relatively new concept in relation to the United Kingdom, and Netherlands. Therefore, case studies from the UK will provide strong insight in providing guidance on speed reduction principles of shared spaces. The principles discovered throughout these case studies will assist in developing an assessment criteria that is reliable and effective.
New Road, Brighton, London
New Roads shared space design has had an impressive design impact. Traffic volumes have reduced by 93%, and vehicle speeds remain below 20km/hr. The road has many physical features that occupy the street such as benches, restaurant, and café and bar seating, vegetation and pedestrian dominated, with a carriageway width of 3.0 metres.
New Road, Brighton use different types of surfaces within the space with many pedestrians citing the different surfaces as the key factor as the reason for taking ownership of the whole street with vehicles and cyclists feel the different surfaces make them feel as pedestrians have priority therefore, they travel with more care.
Ashford Ring Road
Ashford Ring Road shared space design has improved safety significantly. Vehicle speeds remain around 32km/hr. This road also has many physical features that occupy the street such as benches, signage, vegetation and pedestrian dominated. The road uses physical features to visually narrow the road to reduce vehicle speeds with one way traffic carriageways 3.0 metres wide
• Kent highways to work with residents to establish speed monitoring on cut through roads and to establish where public transport is lacking.
The town of Halton Hill’s population includes the areas of Georgetown and Acton and other communities such as Erin, Oakville, Burlington and Milton regions. This is what is considered to be my community because these are the many places that I am visiting most often and they are always referred to together as “Halton Hills Region” (p.5, 2011). With the substantial increase in population in the Halton Hills region, more specifically Georgetown, there should be a strong demand for a public transit system to counteract all of the environmental disturbances that are being caused due to this increase. One of the things that is happening is that there are so many trees they are cutting down in order to expand and grow the population with houses being built. Statistics are showing that the population of Halton Hill’s region will expand by 54% over the next 20 years (p.5, 2011). By the year 2031, employment rates will increase by 75%, leaving Halton with 42,100 jobs being offered (p.5, 2011). With this rapid influx of citizens, this will only increase the demands of travel to get to these work places as well as other destinations (p.5, 2011). Over the past couple of year’s the traffic congestion on the major roads in Halton Hills such as Trafalgar Road and Regional Road 25 with individuals trying to get to and from work. There used to be very little traffic in these areas, however since Halton Hill’s has continued to expand, the utilization of automobiles has significantly increased due to the fact there is no public transit system. The Transportation Demand Management in Halton Hill’s is noticing the increase in automobiles stating that there needs to be a major shift in more efficient ways of transportation, yet there still has been nothing improvised (p.7, 2011). Britain’s first motorway , the 13 km Preston bypass was opened in 1958, and following this the Goverment planned to improve 6750km of road to at least dual carriageway standard to form strategic inter-urban network for England. This network was marked as a national commitment, which would enhance road safety, be easily connected to all major centres of population, promote economic growth and regional development.
City officials want average trip time in this corridor to be reduced to 15 minutes. While this seems to be a reasonable goal, application of SDOT standards in this case suggests it should be seen as a target, rather than as an absolute cutoff.

To make matters worse, California vehicle code section 22500 (f) exacerbates Los Angeles congestion as it precludes vehicles from extending over any portion of a sidewalk or onto a street. This paper will draw attention to the fact that 22500 requires amendment, doing so would both reduce space congestion and ease vehicle accessibility.
There has always been a demand for roads in the United States as roads are essential in the development of a nation. The national interstate highway system was America’s solution for the need of a road system that would stretch from coast to coast. The United States Interstate Highway System is a landmark project and often considered one of the greatest public works projects in American history by making travel by automobile faster, cheaper, safer and more convenient. New roads have been a necessity on our country ever since Henry Ford began to produce the automobile back in in 1903.
The council has a yearly Road Safety Engineering programme to address traffic collisions on the network. Sites are reviewed using collision data held by the Council, which is provided by the Police and Transport for London, where a collision has resulted in a personal injury being sustained. A review of this data for the current three year period shows that there have been collisions on Hedge Lane between Green Lanes and firs Lane with the predominant pattern being caused by vehicles turning out of side roads. A Road Safety Scheme was implemented in 2013/14 at the Hedge Lane / firs Lane junction which has reduced collisions at this junction by 43% in the last three years. During our assessment of Westgate Hill Primary Academy there were many aspects that affect the walkability of the school as well as the surrounding area. Walkability is very important when looking at an area in and around a primary school due to the amount of young children that are walking as a mode of transport to and from school. In our investigation we firstly looked into the variables which may affect the walkability for young students, these variables are: • Street connectivity – We noticed the school is close to a neighbourhood therefore realising this there will be a fair amount of families close by with younger children who will most likely be attending Westgate Hill Primary School, because of this the local council have taken adequate measures in our opinion to accommodate they have done this by setting 20 miles per hour speed limits as well as traffic indicators such as traffic lights and zebra crossings. As president of the National Association of Safety Regulators, Solomon Alvi, had booked a hotel stay for his convention. This was the hotels first convention in 30 years. What seem to be a pleasurable stay ended up to be a catastrophe!
Because this is a comparative study, observation sites needed to have certain characteristics and were hence chosen on the basis of specific independent and controlled variables. The independent variable was the density of the larger surrounding area, while the controlled variables were the type of public space and the zoning of the immediate area. Taking into account who I was observing, I chose to narrow my choices to major commercial intersections. This created a degree of consistency, while also allowing me to observe the greatest diversity of road users possible (as cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers are all likely to converge at major commercial intersections). Thus, I had to select three major commercial intersections, one in a high density area, another in a medium density area, and the last in a low density area.
Finally, many tools were used to document our site visits that would used during the modeling of the buildings. As stated before, PlanGrid was very useful when viewing the construction sheets. PlanGrid was used on an iPad for easy access during the site visit. The iPad, as well as our phones, was used to take pictures of any notable changes or major features of the buildings. The pictures were used as references during the modeling portion of the project. A measuring tape was also used to take the dimensions of sections of the buildings that were not clearly labeled on the construction sheets.
