In life we have to make decisions regarding our loved one’s including our pets; sometimes they are great decisions that will bring about happy thoughts and memories. There are also the times when we have to make those difficult life or death choices that we may feel that are far too painful to bear. When making a choice to end a life of a loved one whether it is a family member, or a beloved pet there is a certain amount of remorse and guilt that is brought on by making such a final decision. To know that they can never come back and that you cannot have a do over makes the choices that much more complicated. When reading Philbert’s “Good” and he talk about “killing his dog”, my initial response why he would do something so awful; but as I continued to read about the reasons that lead up to the decision to “kill or “put down” George, it all started to make sense. My wonder of how someone could do something so awful turned into sadness and empathy. Philbert’s choice to put George down was not cruel as he thinks that is it. I feel that it was the best option he had. Who wants to watch an animal suffer, I think it would be selfish to want them to stay. I was overcome with sadness while reading this essay because it brought up feelings of a time where I had to put down my grandfathers’ dog.
I remember the feeling as though it happened just yesterday. I remember the look of sadness in my grandfather’s eyes as the words came out of his mouth. I remember the car ride to the vet in
I remember waking up that day and that feeling in my stomach, knowing what was about to happen. Growing up I knew about my father's sickness. My family, I recall, was always supportive. No one ever thinks about how one day, everyone you’re around for years, can just vanish. I cherished my friends as I was growing up. I lived there for a majority of my life, up until fourth grade. I remember sitting at a neighbor's house and having the mother come into the room and inform me that I need to be home swiftly. As I ran home, my head was crowded with thoughts to the point where I could not even think about why I was supposed to be home quickly. That day marked the transition of what would be the biggest change in my life. As by dad became sicker,

Animal Euthanasia, is a process during which an animal is put to death. According to Humane society “about 2.4 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs - about one every 13 seconds- are put down in U.S shelters each year.” (humane society.) The saying that dogs are a man’s best friend is often thought of when thinking of dogs, but what if I tell you the man is the dog 's best friend, or even the only friend, only family. So often we see people buying Dogs because they are so cute! and so warm/fuzzy/cuddly! and 90% of the time those dogs do not stay with this family, either they take too much time, decide to move, not enough space or the saddest one they can no longer afford it, and those dogs find their way to the shelter. The family who put their dogs in shelters think it is the best decision, but in turn, it’s really a death sentence. According to Akita Rescue, a dog has “72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off.” (Anonymous) after this time the animal gets put down, So why do this to your pet? to any pet? why have them sit in a cell for no reason, other than you not having enough time or no longer wanting to take care of it; that Dog doesn 't have relatives to which he can go to when things go bad, he can 't just go to his sister, mother, father, or grandparents to that dog you are the world, and by putting your dog in the shelter the dog loses not only you but also his world.
The euthanasia of animals is a very problematic social issue in the world today. Approximately there are about 7.6 million companion animals that enter animal shelters each year. Of those, about 2.7 animals are euthanized, and cats have the highest rate, according to “The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals” (2017). When you hear the term euthanasia in reference to animals, you think of a painless process that ends the countless suffering your pet had to endure over the span of their lives. There are many reasons for which these animals are “put to sleep.” When most pet owners put their pets to sleep it is because their pets have incurable disease, painful illness, behavioral problems and are of old age. When an animal is suffering and is no longer able to recover, this process may be the most humane thing to do. However, euthanasia turns into murder when perfectly healthy animals are killed. Since there is an overpopulation of animals there are many animals left on the street wandering alone. When there isn’t any room for all these new animals being brought in from off the streets, shelters have no other option, but to euthanize. Each year more and more dogs and cats are born and sent into shelters, but for every animal being born another one has to leave and once the animal leave they are most likely going to be euthanized. No matter the situation animals are losing their lives for no clear reason.
“It's not a choice between life and death. It's a choice between different ways of dying” (Preiss). Of Mice and Men, winner novel of the nobel prize in Literature, by John Steinbeck, one of the main characters, George was facing the same problem as Candy whose dog got put down by one of the workers, a stranger. Lennie, the other main character in the novel is getting hunted down by Curley because Lennie didn't know his own strength and accidentally murdered his wife. George made the decision, with Candy and his dog situation in mind, instead of Lennie dying with miserable death, George would put him down with a different and a peaceful way of dying. Of Mice and Men resolves that killing, is a moral option, and should be the person’s own decision.
Most importantly, this book is a great tool for parents and family members to have on hand after the death of a pet to help explain what has happened, especially in the case of euthanasia. This book would not be a good story-time book for children who have healthy pets or who have not experienced the death of a pet, as it could scare them about the future of their pets. Overall, this book would be effective bibliotherapy for parents and family members, as well as a good option for librarians to recommend to families who have recently experienced the loss of their
Gerald Stern’s ‘The Dog,” gives an unique look into a dog’s mind after death. The
The euthanizing of another person can be such a burden for the person that has to euthanize the person because of the guilt that goes through them. In the story, Of Mice and Men George Milton has to kill his friend Lennie small. The reason George has to kill Lennie is if he does not then their angry co-worker Curley will torture him worse than if George just shoots Lennie and puts him out of his misery himself. The killing in the book Of Mice and Men is not justified due to the fact that Lennie Small had a mental disability, George had made a promise to take care of Lennie, and Lennie was never a mean person and didn’t kill anyone or thing on purpose.
My dog Lucy, my best friend, ever since I came home 16 years ago, laid by our fireplace taking in shallow and ragged breaths. She could barely raise her head or give a tiny wag of her tail as we walked past to acknowledge our presence. Her quality of life had been deteriorating rapidly for a little over a week and hard choices were going to need to be made. Lucy would likely die within the next few days, but it was not a certain thing. How much pain was she in that we could not see? Euthanizing would save her from possible pain and suffering that would incur as a result of waiting for her natural death , but was it really that simple of a decision? No, no it was not; we were choosing if our dog lived or died and that decision should not
Without reservation, Carlson says to Candy, “If you want me to, I’ll put the old devil out of his misery right now and get it over with. Ain’t nothing left for him. Can’t eat, can’t see, can’t even walk without out hurtin’” (47). This, much like the ending, illustrates Steinbeck’s ethical view of suffering being greater than death, but in a less extreme situation. Steinbeck prepares readers mentally by exposing them to a situation in which the motif applies and begins to form an internal conflict within readers. If Candy had not let his dog die, he would indeed have the dog he loved, but his dog would be suffering. Candy later says, “I oughtta of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn’t oughtta of let no stranger shoot my dog” (61). This exposes readers to what will happen and inherently introduces the idea of remorse for not ending their suffering peacefully. The strategic placement of this quote further pushes the overall lesson Steinbeck is trying to teach and lets it mature in readers’ minds by instilling this concept of killing the person the reader loves themselves (or being with them when they die) so that the last experience the person dying has is with someone they love and their last feeling of life is one of love and
When is the right time to give up a loved one? No one wants to experience the pain of losing someone. If they are in trouble of losing their life and can’t be helped, we have to pick what's right. Euthanasia is a drug used to kill people who are terminally ill and incurable. This medicine refers to George shooting Lennie. Lennie was already in trouble for killing Curley’s wife on accident and he was scared someone was going to beat him up.George knew that Lennie was going to be killed because there was no way of helping him. George should not be accused of wrongdoing because there was no other way to save Lennie. Therefore, euthanasia should be legal for the sick and suffering, although this decision should be a choice and there is
“Dogs do not have many advantages over people, but one of them is extremely important: euthanasia is not forbidden by law in their case; animals have the right to a merciful death.”
I clearly remember the day I found out about my granddad's passing. I was at school. It was a normal, joyful day. My dad was planning on picking me up, but instead my friend's mom picked me up. He would not tell me why, but I did not think much of it. I remember the car ride to my house. My friend's mom would not tell me why she was driving me home; all she told me was, "Just know, Ryan, that we will be here for you no matter
Among the saddest truths about this lifetime is this: A dog’s life is significantly shorter than a human’s life. I said goodbye to my beloved Miniature Schnauzer, Samson, on March 26th, 2017. He was ten years old. It is an opinion to say that losing a pet is like losing a member of the family. The fact is, though, it is an understatement. Dogs are unique in their own ways. As it is said, “Grief is the price you pay for love.” And I paid a heavy priced that day.
