“Pretty Hurts” Song - Response to Text Essay Introduction The song, “Pretty Hurts” written by Sia Furler is about girls showing the pain to be perfect isn’t worth it, we should focus more on our inner beauty. An important idea in the song is that we should focus more on our inner beauty. A metaphor is used by the author to show a image in the readers head of how terrible it is to get caught up in trying to be perfect. A rhetorical question is used by the author to make the reader think, the evolution to be perfect won’t ever make them be happy with themselves, so why bother trying to fix their appearance when they should be focusing on what’s inside. Paragraph 1 An important idea in the song is that perfection is something society should stop worrying about an work on their inner beauty. This idea means that society should stop worrying about trying to be perfect on their appearance and to fix their inner beauty. In the chorus the author says “we shine the light on whatever's worse/Tryna fix …show more content…
People fell so much pressure to be perfect that at the end of they will ask themselves, was it really worth the energy and pain, and will i ever be happy with my true self? The author asks at the end of the song at the end of the song, “when you’re alone by yourself [...] ,are you happy with yourself?” This example shows how important it is to put value in who you are as a whole person, not just your appearance. Beauty is not just skin deep. The rhetorical question is effective because it makes the reader think about what's meaningful in their life, is it really worth keeping up with society? There's a quote by Ariana Grande where she says, “Be happy with being you. Love your flaws. Own your quirks. And know that you are just as perfect as anyone else, exactly as you are.” Therefore be happy with yourself in every way. And be the best you, you can
Sure, some of us have this great confidence within ourselves about looking great, but that does not hold true for everyone. I understand the pain or disgust, or even disappointment one feels when they look in the mirror and say, “I wish I could change this or that about myself”. Although this piece is written about the author’s life, it holds meaning and connects with for many people; one only has to dig deep enough to find one. For me, it was to realize what is important in life can change, adapt and that we must explore our inner selves and find our own path in life.
“Your greatest self has been waiting your whole life; don’t make it wait any longer.”(Maraboli) When you make that decision in your life that you aren’t content with where you are, it finally clicks that you need to get up and make that change in your life. Giving yourself the power to go in any direction and being able to make the decision on how your attitude will affect your day. Knowing your self worth even at the lowest points in life that when you want to be great, you will be. It may not be easy to climb out of your lowest points because you start to make excuses for yourself on why you could never be happy again. Thinking that it just isn’t meant for you to be successful after the depressing times you have been through. Similar to, “Fight Song,” Rachel Platten wrote this song at her worst times in her life, but used it to remind her not to give up, that she believed in herself and still had fight left. The rhetorical devices used in Rachel Patton’s “Fight Song” are intended to reveal to the listener that to empower yourself, the listener needs to make those changes their life for their own happiness.
Crazy Brave is the story on how Joy Harjo, the author, overcame and survived abandonment and abuse; alcohol abuse; struggles with failed marriages; and being a single mother. In her memoir she recalls her memories, dreams and visions that helped her find courage and her voice.
Even though it is a struggle, being yourself is the best thing that you can be. When trying to be yourself, it is common to face obstacles and hardships that can get in the way of achieving your goals. The character Squeaky from “Raymond’s Run”, by Toni Cade Bambara, faces obstacles and hardships, but in the end she learns that people should not expect her to be someone she is not. She learns to be herself, and no one else. The song, “She Used to Be Mine” by Sara Bareilles is all about being yourself. It deals with obstacles like facing your fears, and the idea that nobody is perfect. The story “Raymond’s Run”, explains how Squeaky, the main character, does not feel accepted by anyone. Her mother expects her to be a “typical girl”, and her
There are two famous and amazing writers. Their names are Doris Pilkington and Katherine Boo. The two authors have written very sad and great stories, but, there is only one story that may grab a reader's attention. That story would be “Behind The Beautiful Forevers’’, Katherine Boo. The reason why Katherine Boo’s story gets her point across is because she shows the difficult things Abdul had to face in his life. Abdul had to go threw garbage and find things he could sell to get money for his family. In the story “Rabbit proof- Fence”, Doris Pilkington tells the challenges his character faces. The challenges that Kundila had to face was the White Raiders coming in and taking their children. In the “Behind The Beautiful Forevers,” Katherine
Madison Farmer Mrs.Korando February 27,2018 English 1 Novel project Summary: In the story Such a pretty girl By Laura Wiess, the story talks about how the main character Meredith was supposed to have nine years of safety from her father. Unfortunately her father had gotten out after three years, and her safety was gone from her father. Meredith's mother is just going to let her father right back into her life after the stuff he has done. Meredith is trying to stay as far away from her father as she can but her mother keeps trying to push her to talk to her father and let him back into her life and pretend like nothing ever happened.
The girl was told to diet, exercise, and use flattery to get what she wants (Piercy, 867). She tried to conform and be everything that is expected, but eventually her good nature wore down. Being told what and how to be from a young age will take its toll on any person especially an impressionable teenager. Being that I have experienced these pressures, although not to the same extent as the girl in Piercy’s poem, I can safely say that young adolescents tend to be quite multifaceted and sensitive which explains why criticism about one’s appearance can damage their morale. This girl no longer had the will to battle the burdens she was feeling and the lines “So she cut off her nose and legs and offered them up” make reference to the fact that she committed suicide (Piercy, 867). I get the feeling in the last stanza that the girl may have had some physically altering surgery sometime before she took her life. Ironically, it is only when the young woman is lying dead in a casket that people begin to acknowledge her beauty. The last line is a very powerful one “To every woman a happy ending” (Piercy, 867). I disagree that the subject of the poem truly had a happy ending, but I do not feel the author meant it literally either. It seems the author means to deject the people in the girl’s life who only saw her flaws and not her true beauty and intelligence.
Being myself is something I will never change; I feel like whenever I feel comfortable with myself, I feel the happiest. I love the way I am, the way I act, and the way I carry myself. I personally feel like, if you’re trying to be someone else, it will result in forgetting who you are, and whenever you realize that it isn’t as exciting as it first seemed, you’ll forget who you are, and trying to get back to your “old” self, will only make you create a new version of yourself. Being your own person is a prized possession that can be easily taken away, being yourself creates a better mind and heart for yourself. Learning self-love creates a lifetime of happiness you can carry and give to others as well.
With nearly half of the world’s population living on less than $2.50 a day, poverty is clearly one of the biggest issues in our society today. The real question is, is it even possible to fully abolish poverty? We live in a world that relies so heavily on cheap labor and manufactured goods, that it is hard to imagine what it would be like if we didn’t have these impoverished people filling these critical, yet unwanted, roles in our society. Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo tells the stories of the intertwining lives of the poverty stricken slum of Annawadi, in the booming metropolis of Mumbai, India. Through the lives of Zehrunisa, Karam, and Abdul, a family struggling to climb out of poverty, Asha the slumlord and her daughter
Ludacris does a remarkable job of portraying his message about the struggles that some adolescents are faced with. “Runaway Love”, by Ludacris, featuring Mary J. Blige (2007), represents the theme of struggle through hip-hop and rap music. It is about little girls who are “stuck up in the world on their own.” They have to take care of themselves because the people they are around do not care about them. They range from nine to eleven years in age, and their goal in life, at such a young age, is to run away from home. Ludacris is trying to get the listener to realize the struggles that even children have to face because adults are not the only ones who have problems, like most people believe. He is very successful in
When she realizes her imperfections are valuable, she has a whole new outlook on her life, which fills her with hope and motivates her to become a better version of herself. The tone in this song reflects a feeling of being content with one's self-image because she finally wonders "why [should she] waste a second not loving who [she is] (Bedingfield 10)? This realization is what brings her out of her depression, concerning what she looks like, to the decision of embracing her appearance because she is beautiful no matter what society
Don´t Ever Look Down. Be Comfortable With Who You Are. Our Flaws Are What Makes Us Perfect As said by Richard Colson Baker (1990-present) in one of his songs, this quote simply means that it´s imperative to be confident and at peace with who you are inside. In this rudderless world, nobody is perfect, but our flaws are what makes us unique. The young singer and actor from Cleveland, Ohio also tells his fans to believe in themselves, and not be afraid to make their dreams a reality.
Many people think that the poem A Song, by Helen Maria Williams, is just a love letter when, in fact, it is more of an expression of her relationship with her inspiration of writing.
“Learning to love yourself will be the hardest thing you’ll ever do in life”. The 21st century, the era of perfection. The era where you are told how to look or else you are not considered beautiful to the world. The era where people like myself go through extremes to be beautiful even just feel beautiful. The extremes that I took were, looking for “love” anywhere with anyone, not caring about my health, and putting my academic career in danger, all of that just to be and feel beautiful.
Analyzing the word, "beautiful" in this stanza, one should perceive that she is not actually singing about the outside of her, but what she consists of emotionally and mentally on the inside. She reveals that her thoughts and emotions are of worth and value and they are of her opinion. They are consumed through her, and no one else and if anyone disagrees, she does not take that into affect. Her diction is actually pretty precise. To quote a famous cliché, beauty is not skin deep. She explains that the beauty is the sentiment.
