Every person in the world experience being sad, frustrated, happy, etc. This is called emotions, emotions are what makes us who we are and it could either help us get through tough obstacles in life, or its what makes us feel the need of giving up. In the story “Raymond's Run” by Toni Cade Bambara, a young girl named Hazel goes through tough obstacles with her brother, Raymond. Hazel is a very determined girl although her brother Raymond, has a disorder which falls under her responsibility, but the main conflict of the story is when Squeaky runs into Gretchen and Gets into an argument, but it’s not really just about the argument it's more about the May Day race. Hazel is known to be the “fastest thing on two feet”, which means to keep her reputation
In Toni Cade Bambara’s short story, “Raymond’s Run,” the main character and narrator, Squeaky, is fiercely protective of her brother Raymond, and of herself. It’s Squeaky’s responsibility to mind Raymond, her older brother who has special needs. Keeping Raymond safe and being the fastest runner in the neighborhood are the things that matter most to Squeaky, and she doesn’t let anyone interfere with either task. She acts tough to protect both Raymond and herself. Squeaky is fiercely protective of her brother Raymond, who is “not quite right in the head.”
Because she saw Raymond running along the sidelines, something sparks inside of her. “Cause if I’ve lost this race, or if me and Gretchen tied… I can always retire as a runner… and coach with Raymond as my champ” (Bambara 111). Squeaky doesn’t care about her win anymore. She is thinking about Raymond’s potential as a runner. Her heart is growing fond at the thought of her brother following behind her footsteps. “My brother Raymond, a great runner in the family tradition” (Bambara 111). This shows that Squeaky is excited for her brother’s future. He is no longer the annoying ‘little’ brother he always was. Now, he is a person with the ability to run like she can. Finally, even after the man announces that Squeaky won, she looks over at Gretchen. There is no longer venom boiling between them. “And I smile. ‘Cause she’s good, no doubt about it. Maybe she’d like to help me coach Raymond” (Bambara 112). There is a newfound respect between the two girls. Gretchen even smiles back. The walls Squeaky spent so long building up are now crumbling down piece by piece as her mind
Emotions and character traits such as confidence, being hard working... are what define us. Every day we experience millions of emotions. Based on what we say or do, it makes up other's people mind about us. It also shapes how they think about us and treat us. One character who is defined by her social emotions is the protagonist Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parker, also known as Squeaky, from the story “Raymond’s Run”, by Toni Cade Bambara. Squeaky may be bossy, sassy… but she has to face many problems; one of these is defending and helping her mentally challenged brother, Raymond. Throughout the story, Squeaky feels like Raymond is an obstacle. However, when she competes in the big May Day race (she has a competition for the first time this year against her new rival, Gretchen), she sees some value
After reading the story Raymond’s Run by Toni Cade Bombara, it has lead me to make a few statements about the main character and her appreciating the determination of others. The main character, Squeaky, doesn’t take others seriously and is quite arrogant when it comes to her running skills. However, by the end of the story, she has learned that other people are as determined as she is when it comes to running. Not only does she learn to recognize this, but she learns to appreciate it.
Squeaky may be small and scrawny, but she can win any track meet. Compared to Gretchen, they both are similar in many ways. In “Raymond’s Run”, by Toni Cade Bambara, Gretchen and Squeaky fight their way to the finish line. Their differences may split them apart, but they both are similar in many ways.
In the story, “Raymond’s Run,” by Toni Bambara, Squeaky is the best of the best but is cocky about it and never lets the opportunity slip when talking to others. Squeaky has a big competition coming up against her biggest rival, Gretchen. Before the race starts Squeaky is determined to win. Although Squeaky is a driven runner, through the end of the 50-yard dash, she starts to realize that is isn’t all about her.

In the story it states “And by the time he comes over I’m jumping up and down so glad to see him- my brother Raymond, a great runner in the family tradition.” Squeaky had just realized that Raymond is an awesome runner. One day people will look up to him cause he’s different from other people and he’s mentally challenged and doing things they never thought
In the beginning of Ramones Run by Toni Cade Bambara. Squeaky didn’t like Gretchen, they didn’t have respect for each other. Squeaky and Raymond where walking down the street and they saw that Gretchen and her sidekicks where with her, but squeaky didn’t move for them so they all said mean things to each other. After the race was over the man on the speaker took a while to say who won, Squeaky and Gretchen both smiled at each other for the good race. After the race they started to respect each other, the way we know that is because they both smiled at each other. They started to like each other because they had things in common with each other like running, also squeaky said “maybe she’d like to help me couch Raymond.” Characters started to
“Raymond’s Run by Toni Cade Bambara ia about a girl named Hazel “Squeaky” who loves running and is protective of her brother named Raymond. To Hazel “like being people” means to be yourself.
It might seem like “Everything will be ok” and “Raymond’s Run” are two very different kinds of stories. One is about an ill cat and one is about a “little” girl having problems letting people in and making friends. Both stories are realistic fiction. Although, both stories share the same theme. In both stories the author teaches us that it is okay to be yourself.
The story “Raymond’s Run” by Toni Cade Bambara is about a little girl named Squeaky who is very fast at running and her only job is to watch her brother, Raymond, who’s “not quite right”. When Squeaky encounters her rival, Gretchen, with her sidekicks Mary Louise and Rosie, blurted out that she will win. However, Squeaky knows that she, herself, will win. Once the race is over, Gretchen and Squeaky smile at each other in a respectful way, and Squeaky says the phrase, “Like being people”.
