I was not really interested in rap or hip-pop music until I listened to some of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis songs. Macklemore is a very strong song writer; his music has some words and meanings. The music video of Same Love by Macklemore featuring Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert and its lyrics is very inspirational and influences to our society. Same Love, the title of the song says everything, Macklemore brings the issue of same-sex marriage and how people is still not accepting them and treated them equally. He wants to let everyone hear or watch this song and influences them in a positive way thinking of homosexuality.
Thrift Shop, Can’t Hold Us, and White Walls you probably heard this song before on the radio or your friend listening to these songs. All these songs are written and sung by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. If you listen very carefully and watch the music video of their song, it is catchy and easy to sing along. Especially the song “Thrift Shop”, it was hit in 2012. People started to pay more attention to their song and it became trendy. A year later, Macklemore and Lewis released another song called “Same Love”. The song and the music video went viral and people loved it including me.

After research, I found out that Lewi used to live with his gay uncle and Macklemore was raised in Seattle where it’s a gay-friendly district. They both really know well about what homosexual is and how they are like. Especially for Macklemore, he was not sure about his sexuality until the third grade, when his mom told him that he was straight. Macklemore’s actual name is Ben and I love how Macklemore puts his and Lewis experience in the lyrics and share their
In the music video "Same Love", Macklemore used pathos, history, and symbolism to emphasize on gay marriage, marriage equality, and homophobia in hip-hop. It follows a storyline of how a boy started to feel like he was gay in the 3rd grade, but his mom reassured him that it was just a phase. Throughout his life, he still had that strange feeling that he could not shake. He was even pressured by his peers to play a game called seven minutes in heaven. He became very uncomfortable which caused him to leave to another party. One day, he decided to bring his partner to his parents' house for dinner and disclosed that they were getting married. As usual, the parents are surprised to hear that their child likes the same sex. Towards the end of the story, the two men get married and by their sides were their families supporting them in every way. Finally, they were happy with a child
In the article, “BOW DOWN, MACKLEMORE: Why Same Love is NOT My Queer Anthem,” Kelly Fox argues that Macklemore’s song Same Love is homophobic, racist, and that Macklemore is a poor excuse for an LGBT ally. While Fox may have a few good points, she rants throughout her article, and establishes almost no credibility with her audience. All of this makes finding those good bits really difficult and not worth it.
Director, Davis Guggenheim, in the film Waiting for Superman, tells the untold stories of five children waiting for their opportunity to go to a better school. Guggenheim’s purpose is to convey the idea that some schools are waiting for their superman to come save the day. In Waiting for Superman, Davis Guggenheim uses a variety of rhetorical devices to show how the education system is corrupt and what is being done to fix this system. Guggenheim appeals to the viewer’s emotions by providing many heartbreaking stories from the five children being interviewed. There is nothing more pitiful than puppy being kicked or a toy being taken away from a baby.
“Same love” is quite literally like nothing anyone has seen before. The message was powerful and well phrased, which made it interesting to listen to. The music video was also entertaining and unique to watch. The emotional impact of the visual story just makes you feel for the character and understands what he went through. Ben Haggerty, Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert have written a song and made a music video that will make it well worth
Ben Haggerty otherwise known as the artist Macklemore is a rapper who has been working as an MC or Microphone Controller since the early 2000 's and has often collaborated with Ryan Lewis on his songs such as "Thrift Shop", "Can 't Hold Us", and "White Privilege II". He has done songs that target a wide variety of subjects and issues ranging from non-conforming to traditional gender roles to White Privilege and the Black Lives Matter movement. Like some other artists, his work demonstrates how he views the world around him using past experiences, interests, and feelings towards events like the protest that had occurred nearby his home on the night of Officer Darren Wilson 's non-indictment trial which he joined. The 33 year old music artist from Seattle has themed quite a portion of his work behind some liberal and nonconformist ideologies that involve experiences in his life like Thrift shopping which he has always loved.
When you listen to most rap music a leitmotif of drug use and glorified alcohol consumption can be heard on most Hip-Hop artist’s albums. Macklemore is a self-proclaimed abuser of these vices. Unlike most he does not elevate these depravities but speaks of his struggles overcoming their drowning influence. In the song “Starting Over” he expresses the disgrace he feels when he relapses. Macklemore painfully illustrates this shame with the verse “Feeling sick and helpless, lost the compass where self is / I know what I gotta do and I can’t help it / One day at a time is what they tell us / Now I gotta find a way to tell them”(“Starting Over”). He explains that he knows what needs to be done to overcome this evil; nonetheless because of his dependence he has become lost, and is ashamed to say he has a problem. In his song “Neon Cathedral” he discusses how going to
Ben Haggerty, more familiarly known by his stage name Macklemore, frequently addresses today’s issues in his music. With his Billboard hit “Same Love,” he strived to make marriage equality more understandable to the mainstream audiences. In his most recent track, “White Privilege II,” he talks about his involvement in the Black Lives Matter movement and the perspectives of others concerning it. Last summer, shortly after his child’s birth, Haggerty released one of the most personal and heartfelt songs he’s created to which he dedicated to his newborn daughter, Sloan. “Growing Up” is an honest open letter addressing the fear of becoming a new father, experiential advice for his new child, and the demanding pressure of his career.
This novel takes place primarily in the city of Charlottesville, Virginia, during the period of the 1980s to the 2000s. Renee and Rob both met there in a bar named the ‘Eastern Standard’ both at the age of twenty-three. He initially planned to keep his relationship to Charlottesville strictly one of host and guest. Both he and Renee didn’t really favor Charlottesville. Then life had another plan for Rob and it was to fall in love. The setting was also a crucial part in the story because it was a music thriving environment at the time and in Charlottesville. Also, it shows that it greatly influenced the connection that Renee and Rob made with each other. The setting
Ben Haggerty, better known as Macklemore, is one of the most popular artists in the hip hop industry. He is best known for recognizing issues within society and using his influence to make a difference. The hip-hop industry has a huge impact on the youth. It influences the way people speak, act, and think. Constant discrimination towards race, gender and sexual orientation takes place among popular songs which encourages audiences to also act in discriminatory ways. “Same Love” was released in 2012 as part of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s The Heist album. The song, produced by Ryan Lewis and featuring Mary Lambert, discusses the false predispositions of homosexuality within today’s society. “Same Love” uses ethos, pathos, and logos to focus on issues of discrimination based on sexuality, gay rights, and marriage equality.
He says, “no freedom ‘til we're equal, damn right i support it” (Macklemore). What this line means is that justice and freedom is only fair when everyone is equal. He supports everyone being equal. “Whatever god you believe in we come from the same strip away the fear underneath it's all the same love”(Macklemore). He is saying everyone is equal and should have liberty and freedom. Lastly he says, “its human rights for everyone, there is no difference.” (Macklemore). He believes everyone should be treated the same no matter what.
In “Wings,” by Macklemore, he refers to many events and problems with today's’ culture. He is seen almost making an argument with himself towards the fact of should he or should he not “fit in.” Macklemore has made the song relate to his life and his experience in his life when he was younger. He begins by stating,“ I was seven years old when I got my first pair.” He refers to his first pair of shoes which are by Nike or particularly Jordans.
When comparing different buildings erected in the Greek and Roman era there are several details within the composition of each project that can set one apart from another and the same time show obvious similarities. In this paper I’d like to discuss those details about two very iconic and important buildings whose building style has been mimicked by architects for hundreds of years now; the Greek Parthenon and the Roman Pantheon. Both of these structures are massive and still stand today which goes to show the ultimate precision and the vast talents of those who created them.
Wings by Macklemore shows how consumption of popular products is a symbol of status. Macklemore attempts to disconnect our attachment to apparel through his lyrics. He has many great examples of consumerism and how he was attached to the logo. At the beginning of the song Macklemore states, "In school I was so cool."
The appeal he uses most often is pathos, it is found throughout the song. Macklemore uses a word that is very hurtful to homosexuals: “faggots" (Haggerty, Lewis, Lambert, 2102). He uses it to show how people inappropriately use the word, but it is a word that causes a lot of pain to some people. His word choice is effective in bringing out emotion as in the line, “plagued by pain in their heart.” The choice to use the word plague describes just how bad the pain is. When people hear the word plague, we think of a widespread disease that affects hundreds and causes worldwide scare. He is saying that this pain is what they have in their heart every day. By using pathos to appeal to the emotion of love in every chorus, “my love, she keeps me warm,” Macklemore successfully tugs at a listener’s heartstrings because most can relate to the feeling of love in some way or another. Another phrase that he uses that applies to pathos is “some would rather die than be who they are.” In today's society, the topic of suicide is extremely emotional, which is what this lyric refers to. Macklemore uses a great deal of pathos appeal to reach out to his listeners and get his argument across.
The song is typical of its’ genre because it is a love song like so many others in the R&B genre. There are many rhetorical appeals in the song, such as ethos and pathos. The music video tells us that John Legend was singing that song for his future wife Chrissy Teigen, so that would make John Legend credible. In a lot of videos it is a random person with the artist, but in this particular video John uses his real fiancée and shows that it is not a perfect relationship. This allows him to be credible because he is using his own real life situation and not an unrealistic one. When you think of the emotional appeals in the song(pathos), you’ll see that the entire lyrics are emotional. This is a love song with a lot of emotions throughout the lyrics. “Give your all to me. I'll give my all to you. You're my end and my beginning. Even when I lose I'm winning”, these song lyrics are showing how John feels about Chrissy and their love for each other. You can understand the emotional connection that the two share. The music video helps cement their relationship because the video only includes John and Chrissy. John is showing his love towards Chrissy by singing to her and the audience sees the emotions between
